Swing by and pick me BL4 I'll split the gas with ya! TO I was laughing before I got to the almost a girl part. Saw it coming. I'm wiping tears from my eyes thanks for sharing that. You should remind him that when ever you have company over. Without a doubt there will be no nap. Took a stroll out to the garden ice cream pail in hand expecting to get about a bucket end up with 3. I couldn't believe I just picked them day before yesterday and some today were getting border line too big. While I was picking noticed a cuc thought oh there's one I missed. WRONG! Picked enough for 3-4 more qts of pickles. Bummer! I couldn't live without air. Came in and made an orange float to cool off my inards 91*! Been snappin beans for over an hour and I'm not done yet then on to blanchin and baggin. Then sweet pickles. Naner peppers are going to have to wait till the morrow along with the cole slaw. Planning on cole slaw on burgers and slaw as a side tomorrow night. MMMM! Boy that pie sure do look good! Have to make 3 pies and a big pot of home made egg noodles in chicken broth for the fam reunion next weekend. Back at it! Snap Snap Snap!
Thanks guys for the support! I tend to catch a lot of flack for the decisions we make. When I decided to eat locally and per season, I caught a lot of crap that I was going to "die over winter" and that it was "super expensive to eat organically" and "so what are you going to eat in winter, when nothing is in season?" and blah blah blah. Man, I don't want to think the flack I'd catch if I said we were going to grow our own food, garden and proteins alike! We have one SIL/BIL totally for it, but the other one is snooty. hehe. I know they will like it when they can reap the benefits of it, of course. They enjoy the "fad" of it, but not the real idea of it, if i'm making sense.
TO) That is a BEAUTIFUL pie. It looks so proffessional, the edges meet up perfectly. My pies are tasty, but oh man are they a mess! Someone took my pie pan, and I had to make my tart cherry pie in a casserole bowl!!!! I called it my "deep dish cherry pie"
Was yummy tho!
Annarie) I am glad to hear someone else does it too! We lost a few things, but just took it back and got a credit. We go there enough, so it works out. I think I am just going to get some small cherry trees, as they produce rather young, and we are planning on moving in a couple years. I have bigger "orchard" plans when we are in a more permanant home
(ETA: did I say I want those ducks? Why oh why do I live where I can't have poultry!
)
Who is going to state fair and when? I can't wait for it to get here!!!
I am going to probably bake a loaf of bread, seeing as we are running low! Ciao my BYC lovelies!

No offense at all taken. Like i said it's hard to fit a nice picture in that small so you can actually see it. She loves her chickens. I know what you mean about the potty training. My youngest daughter would go potty in the potty at 16 months without any cloths on, but as soon as you'd put clothes on her she'd pee her pants. It took her until about 18 months to figure it out. It was very funny though. I wonder how many other people thought the same thing and just didn't say anything
That is a great story Terri! I was cracking up and had to share with the whole family. By the way I'll be there in an hour with forks and 5 other mouths to feed, you better make another one.
Well I'm getting quail on Friday. They sound fun and what can I lose. I already have a rather large rabbit hutch to house them in. I'll have to build a run, but that will happen next spring. The lady said when they mature they will be white with blk. So excited! I love an adventure. Raiquee- I totally support the "natural" way of living. I think it's great that you are raising your family that way too. I actually didn't put in a garden this year and am going through withdrawls. Everyday you guys say what your going to pick and I just sit here and pout. Told DH that we should get a greenhouse then we could have veggies year round. He's thinking about it. Friend of mine said that I could come over a pick green beans, he's got more than he'll ever eat. Says he already has 60 bags in the freezer. I might do that tomorrow, depending on the heat. Well I think I'm going to go make my own pie for supper. Talk at you all later!
Evening everyone! Came home this afternoon and the kids and I started working on washing up the beans that were picked the other day and are in the process of making 10 pints of dilly beans-waiting for the brine to boil and then can fill jars and process in the hot water bath. Also cooked a kettle full for eating tonight-running late with dinner tonight
Forgot but both DD and DS(the older one) can take food processing for fair next year so will have to start having him help too!
My garden is a mess yet and the weeds over grew the plants not sure how many more beans and pickles we will get, beets are probably ready to make pickled beets with-maybe this weekend.
Day 6 for the Welsummer eggs.
Dilly bean brine is just about ready- enjoy the evening!
Early Evening to All... What a blessing it is here on the hill. The daily stuff is ok. I chose to stay home and care for all the critters. I'm glad i did.
The broccoli salad receipe is a basic you need to tweek...no need to measure really, suzie never does much...
1lb bacon fried and later broken on the salad.
1 med red onion
1 bunch of broccoli
1 cup of shredded sharp cheddar cheese
The sauce is miracle whip, milk, vinegar and sugar... prolly a cup of salad dressing, a splash of milk, a splash of vinegar, and a sprinkle of sugar to make it taste sweet but still have a twang. Give it the finger taste.
Sometimes it's a half of ice cream pail of broccoli, and sometimes it's more.
Suzie cuts all the broccoli up. She has all the bacon fried and on paper towels. She mixes her sauce to the proper taste that's not too sweet and not to twangy. She grades the cheese onto her cut up broccoli...one needs to use a large enough bowl for mixing with a spoon. Then she breaks her bacon on the salad and adds the sauce and mixes...not to much sauce, just enough...you know what I mean...then I sample, and just keep eating til gone...
I think I need a transfusion the skeeters were so bad....picked lettuces and herbs for salad and went down to the veggie garden because I noticed earlier that there a whole BUNCH ready to pick. I got a milk crate to overflowing! I guess I will be canning some maters tomorrow! Girls cooked dinner and I nearly cracked my daughter in the head...what does she make for a veggie? Yup--a bag of the beans that I cleaned, blanched and froze last week!!!
She really took offense to me not being very happy too! darn kids!
I felt pretty good this morning after 15 hours of sleep but I am getting tired pretty quick here...guess I'd better go out and close up doors and then off to bed early for me! Maybe it really is true that you cant "catch up on your sleep." I have heard of differing opinions on the subject.
So glad I could make you all drool over my pie. It stuck around for about 2 hours and now it is GONE! Guess I havent make one in a while. Maybe another for tomorrow it it isnt quite as hot...just thinkin' about canning those tomatoes is already making me sweat!
Good night all! Terri O
(PS) the broccoli is starting to come in the garden!!!
Terri, and I thought I was the only crazy one turning on the oven in this heat! Yesterday I had to make bread, so I figured I'd throw together a batch of CC cookies while I was at it (baked 3 dozen, put another 3 in balls in the freezer), at least I stopped myself from making a loaf of choc zuke cake. That pie looked fab, I don't doubt it vanished. Our neighbor dropped off 6 mammoth zukes since last weekend, and today he brought a spaghetti squash the size of a watermelon - need to decide how to process them.
Picked beans the other day and to my great dismay saw hundreds of skeeters rise up out of my plants
They are everywhere, I've never seen it like this. Please God, give us a little dry weather
DS looks like he has chicken pox, poor kid. Then he itches the bites and makes them bleed, ugh! Terri, your nekked story was so funny! We did that here too, potty training last summer. DS had a wretched habit of doing his #2 on the blacktop driveway, abjectly refused to go on the potty. Glad that's done, now starting over in another 4 weeks.
Raiqee, kudos to you for your food mindset!!! Nevermind the doubters; they'll be crawling to you on hands and knees when it hits the fan, cause they don't know how to grow food. There was a thread here recently about the exact thing; someone had the best quote, something like, "I'm like a lion and kill my own food, you are like a maggot and have to have someone else do it for you." I laughed my butt off! Seriously, you are striving for a great thing. I'd really really like to try to have a community cow if I can find enough like-minded folks here. We don't have the pasture or buildings for it, but I'd be more than willing to share a milking schedule with some other families.
Really Annarie, stop tempting me with ducks, free ones! I want them soooo badly, almost a shame the watermelon is coming at the end of the month, ha! Still haven't picked a boy name....uh-oh.
