Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Oh I sure wish DD18 would get home so we could leave! I am so hungry....maybe I should go for some crackers to tide me over? SSHHHH--kids dont know about the pesto--I did all the dishes up before they got home! T

Not only steamy but the misquitos are out in droves just walking out of the house and one gets swarmed!

Not sure what we will be doing today as DH is going to work on a garage that needs to be repaired(as long as it doesn't rain). DD has to start working on her record book for fair so we might get started on that.

Also trying to get the pen we had the turkeys in set up so the group of pullets can be moved outside- and yes maybe DH can have that space back in the garage

Think next spring I might hatch some their chicks. Bread is on the first rise. Need to do my dishes and then on to soaking pickles.

Looks like they are having a serious meeting there Dr H! Looks like you and I are the only ones here this am

Working on shredding Zucchini to freeze- have a bunch to do yet, DD is helping to shred it up, than maybe have to brave going outside to check the garden and pick if needed-will probably need to take a bath in misquito spray

I will post some pictures of our new chicks when they hatch- cute babies there DrH-we've also noticed that some chicks are bigger than others at hatch.

Back to work washing and peeling.

Nope I am here Too!!! I had a few private messages I had to take care of...they always take precedence with me. I get so few of them so I am always excited to see them. I was going to go to the dog park and watch "the incredible dog team" perform at 10:30 but I am going to see them at noon instead. Sitting in front of this fan feels pretty good right now! Besides I slept in like a teenager and I need more coffee and:caf I do believe I will have to make another pot though...DD24 has decided that she likes coffee in the morning now too...maybe she is growing up?

The garden tomato soup looked pretty good when I refrigerated it last night. I am going to puree some, add the cream and heat it up for lunch. If it is very delicious I will can up the rest for later.

THe house actually feels "cool" today! I wish I had some of your Zucchini H&R...as I was cleaning off my shelf I found some relish made from it from 2005!!! THe chickens really enjoyed that! It was pretty darn mushy--still tasted OK, although it had lost color quality! I like to use the skinnny ones to make my B&B pickles...nover seem to catch the cukes at the right time for them. Maybe this year. Both plants only have flowers at this time so I imagine I will have a ton when you guys are only picking the forgotten giants!

THat reminds me of a story...
So I was in the garden picking giant zukes one summer, my daughter and her friend were 5 and 6 I believe. I was tossing them over the garden fence for the chickens and the girls each picked on up to "play" with, I went in to do "Mom" things...they were busy in the yard...they cam in and asked for towels so I gave them each an old hand towel. Shortly they were back and each had a zucchini that they had carved a little face on with their fingernails, wrapped in a towel. They proudly displayed their Zucchini Babies! THose girls carried the squash around for about 2 weeks! It was so adorable! THe really funny part was when they started to get soft and I suggested feeding them to the chickens...kinda creepy how they laughed as their "babies" were devoured! We still talk about that...it was pretty much a yearly thing when they were that age....got more and more complicated with paper clothing then "real" clothing....just mentioned it to DD18 and she was chuckling all the way up the stairs.

so that's all for this morning I guess...DrH I LOVE your pics! I can just imagine you sitting there having a talk with the girls and your cat, beer in hand...they must just like to hang out at that bench! Did you have snacks too to bribe them with at the beginning? Now they just wait for you to appear? It makes me laugh thinking about it--thanks!
H&R--sounds like you and Erin are getting a bunch done today! My son hated doing record books so he decided that he wasnt going to....then he couldnt sell his animals any more! I was kinda glad...then I didnt have to help him take care of them!

Darn Jack Russel just attacked one of the cats...she is so naughty! DH was yelling at her...doesnt work! I think she needs to wear her muzzle ALL the time! Forgot to wish you guys a Happy Friday the 13th yesterday!

My favorite day! Have a good one! Terri O

Well, it's been an interesting morning so far....

I got my first goose bite trying to bind up their angel wing myself. I had my mom help me with it last night, but some of the wing tips flipped back out of the tape already because if the way I positioned it, so I wanted to try and fix it myself quick (the sooner, the better - the boys are already too old to correct it, but I'm trying anyways, and the girls are just young enough I have a chance). BIG mistake. I have a big, cherry-red blood blister on my forearm. I guess I'll wait until 5 when mom's off work.

And things went bad with my broody Khaki Campbell.

I went out to feed her and the two babies I let her keep this morning, opened the pen, and noticed right away that the ducklings were hiding in the corner of the pen, away from mom. Mom stood up and there's fresh blood all over her feet and in the nest - she pecked an egg that was within a few days of hatching open, and the duckling bled out. I wasn't sure that's what happened at first, but I stood and watched them for a few minutes, just to try to assess what was happening, and once momma duck was calm about me being there, she bent over and started pecking at the egg some more. Makes me feel terrible because the blood was so fresh, it must have just happened before I went out this morning. What's more - one of the two ducklings I let her keep, which was perfectly healthy yesterday, has a bum leg now! No injury I can see, and the duckling has a little control over the leg, so I'm hoping it'll heal in time - looks like just a pulled muscle.

So, in a way, there's a happy ending in that we ended up with 7 ducklings in total, and besides the little limpy one, they're all healthy and in the brooder now. But it came to a bad end too - I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to get that crazy, vicious duck off the nest (without some more bites and blood blisters!) so that I can remove the bloody, dead egg from the nest before bugs show up, and candle the rest of the eggs in the nest to see if there's anymore still alive.

Here's the babies in their (messy!) brooder:

AWWW--I am sorry Annarie! I had a duck do that too. I was not sure if the egg broke and then she ate it or what. She also picked at one of her ducklings and made it's head bleed. She certainly wasnt a good Mom! She didnt take good care of her (only 2) babies either. I think they joined up with a different group. I found another duck nest! That makes 4! This one is up in the rafters above the chicken coop. I felt something watching me and there she was! I was wondering where her nest was 'cause I saw her come out to drink, bathe and eat--the chickens would beat the snot out of her--but I never saw where she went back to! Now I know!

More ducklings on the way! Ha~! That remends me...I had a dream that I took the rest of Frankie's babies away and sold them...she was NOT pleased! OH OH--I am hearing commotion outside...better go and check! T
