I also use deep litter and love it. If you are looking to never h ave poops in your coop, get rid of the chickens. Lol. I also only clean out ince a year. The girls keep everything turned and I add graas after mowing, or weeds from the garden or leaves in the fall, but always more shavings before the winter.

Del-I inspected the babies last night and noticed that most of them have a really prominent straight keel. I do think that their is at least one roo in the bunch. I know I am new to chickens, but if there is anything that I have minute experience with its baby roos more than baby hens. Its one of the splash wyandottes. He is taller, seems to be the first to do everything, and I think his comb is reddening a bit.

Also would you like to head to CC's with me in 2 weeks? I know you've got you training coming next weekend.

kept us from getting the predicted 6' of snow. only got about 3' here, however (of course there is always a "however" ) it is now doing a freezing mist thing that is starting to coat everything with ice.

ENOUGH WITH THE APRIL FOOL'S JOKES MOTHER NATURE!!!!

Lost one of my new chicks before I could post more pics of them!

Not super surprised tho. Looked good til I got them home then I had trouble getting this one to drink. Perked up when it got some nutridrench in it but was never quite as active as the other three and a tip off was when they slept, the 3 would be sprawled out in one spot and this one was always a little ways away from them. Gave them the 48 hours on the drench, then switched over to the save-a-chick yesterday morning. Everybody else fine, by mid morning this one was slowing down. By mid afternoon it was gone. So sad when I went in there to check, the other three were just standing there staring at it.

Just failure to thrive I guess or just never had the strength to deal with what it had to go thru it's first days of life. I think this one might have been a day older than the rest anyway because it's wings were a lot more feathered out than the other three which would mean it possibly went another full day w/o water, etc. than the rest.

I didn't notice at the time because when WE went to pick them up (my neighbor and I had went in together on an order) and we got to her house I just grabbed quickly the 4 I could catch out of the box and put them into my carrier so I could get the car door closed to keep the chicks warm. (It was only in the teen temps up here of course, sigh).

It's ok, the other three have made it thru their first 36 hrs. and looking great! It's so funny to watch them. They zip around like you're watching a video game and then, like somebody rings a bell or something, they all fall over and go to sleep!!!

Which lasts a few minutes or so and then POP! they're back up and fighting over one hole in an 8 hole feeder!!

Silly baby chookies
