Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Oh goodness...a lot of material, comments, hatches, etc.

It is a nice looking, but cold day here. The kids and I are off this morning to get our hairs cut. We finally found "the person" that has talent! I used to cut my sons hair, but he is at an age that he wants a certain look and I cannot create it, so he gets to go too!

We have a soccer game for DD12 today..brrrr. At least its not raining or snowing for that matter.

All chickens are doing well. When I had the coop open yesterday, the wyandottes/ameraucanas came out and scratched around, but the black orps wanted nothing to do with the outdoors. It looks like I may need to force them out of the coop next time. The lav orps in the basement are getting messy and stinky. This is why I hate raising chicks inside. YUCK! They aren't even feathered yet. I am trying to force the black orps and wyandotte/ameraucana flocks to blend so I can get the lav orps outside SOON!!!!!! When I allow them to mix, the black orps (being older) come in and eat the teenagers food and peck them on the head. NORMAL....okay, so how long does this transition take??? I let them out to blend during the day(late afternoon/evening) and (if its warm) overnight, but during feedings I separate them.

Okay, need another cuppa! I'll be back after soccer.

good morning folks, brisk in the northwoods

I broke a couple broody BCM's last week, put them in a cage away from the flock,,took 2 days,,this cage is roofed and outside of the coop,,,theory is they "cool" off,,worked for them

kris, seeing some pics and having a couple birds that did that last year my explaination is that the feather colors aren't distinct/crisp,,,meaning a feather that should be black is smudged to another (often brown in BCM's) could be a blue feather that shows more grey or black than desired,,,,tons of posts on that thread you posted to but if you take the time and go through all the pages you will see many pics of "mossy"

heading out in a bit to pickup my ducks,,,,wishing it was warmer 12º this morning,,,I'll need to rig another warmer for their waterer,,,ugg

.....do you really want to know your loss.....LOL...mine for the last two years is an average .60 a day based on a ave. of 12 layers (8 egg/day ave.), four free loaders, free ranging as much as possible, electricity in winter, and $1.50/doz.(that is all i can get in my area....lots of people raise ckns here)..............All worth the loss for my pets.................

Good morning!!!!! SUN!!!!! It is cold. But that is po. I will be working hard enough to keep warm. I will be doing spring clean! And moving the littles out to their segrated area in the coop! Putting them on the ground in this sun!!!!

Have a wonderfull day :)

Beautiful pups, Hurley!

Well said Babylady & Cindy. I don't disagree that how children are raised has a tremendous impact on how they grow into adults. But there's also a lot of people who have had miserable, horrible childhoods and raised themselves above it on their own. That's the whole nature v. nurture debate. I just emphatically reject the notion that all teenagers are bad. And as a mother of one and proud aunt of 4 more who are graduating high school this year (2 are going to aviation school, 1 has joined the air force, 1 is going to school to become a semi-mechanic and one is going to school to become a fire fighter) there's not a bad one in the bunch -- so I defended them & their generation. And I will continue to do so when I see statements like that.

And while I'm on a roll, SIZE DOES MATTER -- and anyone who tells you otherwise is lying! ha ha ha Think of it this way: if you wanted a robust, hearty breakfast of eggs would you want a fart egg, a bantam egg, a regular egg or a double-yolker?!! HUMMM????

So will my broody ever get over being a broody? She's the only naked-neck/bantam I have. She did this to me last year, too, and Terri was kind enough to bring me a couple of newly hatched chicks to put under her, but she was wise and wouldn't accept them so I ended up raising them and passing them on to another friend. Well, here she is broody again this year. The biggest problem is that she steals everyone else's eggs to put under her, and once she sits on them, I won't collect them for human consumption. (I've created a couple other places for them to lay but they still prefer the broody's box.) Guess I better go look up how to break a broody. (Thanks for the offer, Terri!)

Looks like it's going to be a pretty day - hope you get to get out & enjoy it!

If you want I could give you a few eggs to put under her to hatch...if you can't break her brood

Colton..... Congrats on the chicks, they look perfect. All fluffy and healthy.... You did good, you should be very proud !!! Now the hard part... giving them to your friend. Are you keeping any? ~ FrenchToast

Actually, luckily for me, he only gets the ones that he hatches ( I don't like giving up my chickies ). He didn't have any hatch though. He is in my grade and lives less than a mile away. I actually keep a couple of his chickens because he doesn't have anywhere to put them. Now I have 35 chickens. 15 are less than a month. I also have some roosters that need to go. I let anyone have them. They are huge!! They are Light Sussex and I have five of them. I am keeping one and have a friend that wants one. I let anyone have them for 2 bucks each. Here's some pics of them.

You can see what happens when you have too many roos on my EE. That one is lighter. Not sure why.

And my black austrolorp. If you take all the other ones you can have this guy. He is a great rooster. I would keep him if I had enough room. Need to get rid of him because some young ones are going in his coop in a month.
