Biggest symptom,of cocci ? Is it bloody poops?
Deli....I raid friends houses after Halloween...anyone with decorative pumpkins sitting on their porch that were to carved, I ask for them. I think I had a dozen delivered to my house and we had a few. So they work great.

Having the outside is good for chicken too..but the inside is what I really need. Those pumpkin seeds have chicken value.

Wow, our sheriffs dept really dropped the ball in the search for that missing 2 year old. Its making national news and the articles/news stories are making it clear that they didn't look in the places they should have.

So sad. Nothing about how the baby died on the news. I just can't imagine how that family must hurt.

I surrender!!! Two weeks on the FF and my girls are losing weight. They just won't eat it more than a bite or two. Even completely stopped all extras. Nope. The chicks will eat it, but not the girls. They actually like moist feed but just won't eat the FF. I offered dry pellets yesterday and they went after them like they were starving. Even though there was bowl of fresh FF right there. No benefit if they won't eat it so I am just going to do the moistened feed.

Well, the pipped chick is out already. Must be a record.

And another egg is pipped. Hmmmm, guess I better get out and pick the raspberries tomorrow. Raspberry rhubarb crisp does sound yummy. And some homemade raspberry ice cream on top sounds even better. Thanks for the idea, Bigfam. I'll have an extra piece for you.

Speaking of berries, one of my sweet cherry trees finally produced this year. We've been waiting quite a while for it to start bearing. And I can tell you in no uncertain terms that it is definitely NOT a sweet cherry tree!

Definitely pie cherries........... Darn those fish feces!

Oh well, next year I'll be canning cherry pie filling, I guess. Not much else new or exciting. The chickies are holding their own in the oppressive heat. I gave them a very large pan of water for them to wade in like Vicki's girls, but they just looked at me like I was crazy and have been using it as a large drinking trough.

I hope everyone and their birds/critters are doing ok. Sweet dreams, all. sometimes you have to set them in it for them to get the idea

Good morning. I slept like a rock last night...finally! Feeling a tad better today, either the humidity is down a bit or I am getting used to it!

I read about this last night! How horrible. So the 7 year old has nothing to say? There was the sketchiest information in the article. The parents must have trusted the other child with the baby or they wouldnt have let him "watch" him right? Either that or they are the kind that just doesnt pay attention...I hope they find some answers soon.

I have the book "Storey's Guide To Raising Chickens" and in there it states that eggs do not have to be turned after day 14. Im wondering how true this is? Anyone have any thoughts on this?
I would think that would be accurate. The hen still turns them though, I think all through the time she is sitting. Directions on the bator say to stop turning 5 days(I think) before hatch day...so that is close to day 14--especially if your temp is a smidge high!

Im really looking forward to seeing what will come out of this hatch. BLRW roo x with Blue Wheaton Americana, blue wyondotte, black austrolorp, black wyondotte and the BLRW hen. Staggered is lavender orp x speckled Sussex, gold laced wyondotte and black orp. This was going to be last hatch for the year but after losing so many in the junk bator may do one more in Brinsea depending on how these hatches go. And how the 3 broody hens turn out.

It sounds like you will have a MESS!

A lot of dark chicks that you wont be able to tell apart. Probably some good meat birds and a contribution to your laying flock...Those mutts usually are pretty good layers...if you can keep them from going broody!

Vicky--head to your ethnic market for help! They have pumpkin seeds cheap! I saw a bunch at the Mexican market when I was there yesterday. Give them a soak and grind them up with your apple cores...or pick up a bottle of Wazine!

Hey CC--nothing wrong with sour cherries! Isnt that was BL4 used to make the vodka ones? Oh yeah, my friend said to come and get some from her tree...and I need to head to another friends' place to pick raspberries too! AND JIM--you mentioned blackberries were headed for a bumper crop...can you let me know when you are in the thick of them? I would love to come and snag a few buckets from you! My plant(one) is still struggling along...been 7 years or so since I put it in...never had a single berry yet!

Well I guess I will head out--good luck with the show Cuties! That doesnt look too much like a puppy! Where did you get her? German Shorthair Pointer? If you wanted oomph why didnt you just go for a Border Collie? Dont have to spend so much time training them...just finding them something to do!

the BR's father was a Shafer (IN) cock bird, this breeding has 1/4 hatchery background so should be good layers

2nd, a OE pullet with attitude


Next a couple pics of the White Chanteclers these came as eggs from Gina Neta,,,impressive 13 week old birds. That is 1"X2" fence for size comparison, 3 cockerels

Kristi, I have read there are many strains of cocci, like 7 or 9 (can't remember exactly), and only 2 strains have bloody poop, and the bloody poop is usually one of the last symptoms to appear. I think I read that in the Chicken Health Handbook. Vicki, does that ring a bell with you?

Coccidiosis is a protozoan disease characterized by enteritis and diarrhea in poultry. Unlike the organisms which cause many other poultry diseases, coccidia are almost universally found wherever chickens are raised. Coccidiosis outbreaks vary from very mild to severe infections.
Individual strains of cocci attack birds differently, resulting in diverse symptoms. The overall symptoms may be one or more of the following: bloody droppings, high mortality, general droopiness, emaciation, a marked drop in feed consumption, diarrhea and a drop in egg production in layers.
It is common to add a coccidiostat in the feed of broilers. In addition, live vaccines are currently available.

A lot of people are hosing down their chicken pens because of the heat, sometimes several times a day. I would think that might help cocci get a good hold in the area. Just a thought. I put up a big shade tent for the young chickens that were getting to hot in the tractor and gave them fans and they seem pretty darn happy now. I don't know who waters/mists their coops here, I just got advice to do that somewhere numerous times somewhere else and thought it might be a bad idea...

Terri all my eggs are marked and will band legs as they hatch like last hatch so I know who's who. Very glad I did with first hatch as they were all black and now that their getting good feathers I wouldn't be able to tell them apart of I hadn't other than the 2 wyondottes and one Cochin bantam.

Sugar has a third baby. It's dark as well. So CC once again, no lav hatch here! it's actually funny at this point!

I do have to say, as I look at the Hershey baby face, I love it already. If it comes out with Hershey's eyes.... Oh man, I'll be In Trouble!!!!
