Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hi All!

Sure, busy day on here today and I was busy cutting quills! Well, at least I read everything.

Hope all goes well for everyone today.

Night All!

Just thought I would share this picture with you all !! I was finally able to get my puter to recognize my camera card but it took me FOREVER to post it. I took some of my pot belly piggys too. I'll post them another time.

Kind of reminds me of my filly, Lily. Only in black.

Stop! You guys are making me so jealous of those beautiful horses ;-)
Terri, you are welcome to mg eggs anytime.
And I think syd was just very tired. We have to get up at 4:30 when scott is out of town. They havebeen going to bed by 8. It was almost 9 by the time we left! Blake stayed awake the whole way home! They both showered good. And even got up good this morming. They are so happy when we visit teri. I think thwy dont want to be crabby when they are tired the next day so we can keep going!

One of the young hens was not in last night :'( I hope the hawk did not get her. But I have never had a hen not come in...it was still dark when I left today. So I just open the door, and fill feeders. They eat when they wake. So maybe she is under a pine... probably not. Maybe I will have to make a ghetto yard like delisha.

French, you COULD post those horses on CL with the neighbor's #......

Feeling pretty good this morning, not too sore! Just hacking up a lung every now and again. Great time at TO's! DH was in his element; I think he misses doing that kind of work, he sure had fun! Tossing hay bales like they were nothing....

Today is Camo day for homecoming week. This is how my oldest DD went to school:

Anyway, I should motivate. Have a good one everybody!

I got some pictures of my yearling:) She isn't putting on weight like she should be, I upped her grain rations, so I'm not sure why. She's 14hh right now, I really hope she gets to 15.2 or 15.3.

Can you guys tell me what it costs you to feed a horse in the winter. Something along the lines of quarter horse or appy size. That rides an hour 3-5 times a week. I've been trying to research what it would cost us. And I can not find any seemingly good info...
Hope you guys dont mind me asking on a chicken thread ;-)

Between my yearling and two mini donkeys, which probably equal to a full size horse, we give them 1-1.5 bales of hay a day in the winter, which we pay $3 a bale, and we go through a bag of grain in around 2 weeks. Last winter we went through 117 bales of hay, so we ended up spending around $350 for the whole winter.

It can depend on so many factors Cuties. My 2 QH and 1 Paint pony are eating roughly 1 round bale for 8 days that costs $50 a bale. I don't grain as they are fat n sassy and am no longer riding. This drought has raised hay prices over double from a year ago. And it has also caused me to feed at least 2 months earlier than last year. I'm near the choice of selling at least one of my horses at this time as last year I was working for hay which cost $20 a bale, the same person I worked for for 6 years got hay greed and now wants to charge me $150 for the same bales so I quit working for the farm. Very upsetting to put me in this position after working for them for so long. I did all discing, plowing and planting of corn; all cutting and raking of hay(we hired out to bale) and all hauling of hay back to the farm besides all tractor maintenance and even mowing of their lawn and taking care of their personal vehicles and gardens. Before last year I didn't get hay until near snow fell and I know I've never had my hay amount equal to the work I did in exchange to be sitting here fretting over trying to find hay. The hay we are getting now is from a neighbor who sells his for $85 but is being a good neighbor and helping us out reducing the price. He is also taking one of my daughters steers in trade for 10 round bales just to help us out of this situation so I can try and keep my horses. My pony is a rescue from kill pens in MN back in 2002, she was starved and beat when I got her and is very wild. I know noone would want a horse like her so if I did try and home her she would eventually end up shipped, but she has a good home where she can live without fear. My Palomino is another rescue horse who does not trust men and is a hard horse. She saddles every time like the first time and Ive owned her for 6 years, used to ride daily but health has caused me to not ride anymore due to fear of getting hurt. My daughters QH on the other hand is a very well broke horse and would be the one we would rehome.

Well that was a long drug out answer to a short question. So basically it depends on how much hay is in your area, I used to always figure one square bale a day per horse. I do my own hoof trimming most of the years but last time we had it done we had a horse shoed so it cost more. I'm not sure what the going rate is now. We did alot of road riding which kept their hooves down so we didn't need trimming as much as they do now not being ridden. And depending on the age you may need teeth floating, yearly shots which I always do myself purchased from F&F, coggins testing per year if you plan on riding on any state parks or entering into any fairs or events. I've only had one horse Ive had to grain which was a 38 yr old Arab which we had to feed beat pulp and alfalfa cubes as he was too old to eat hay, best horse Ive ever owned, lost him 3 years ago.

Sadie and Buddy, can't seem to find a photo of Missy, she's a black and white paint Pony very beautifully marked.

Ha found one with her, forgot they were on my portable drive. The 3 grazing in the north pasture.

Also forgot to add, I have one hatch so far(Blue Wheaton Americana x BLRW) and 10 pipped. Had an accident lastnight and dropped the lid from the Brinsea and cracked 2 eggs, they are still alive and chirping so I hope they still make it thru the hatch but I may have to assist. The only ones pipping are out of the Brinsea and the Hova are doing nothing args. It's only day 20 so could still hatch but seeing nothing yet.
