Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I have a hawk problem too. It has been taking my bantams. Yesterday I actually saw it eating my bantam lemon blue splash cochin hen :( It was killed in the run that was supposed to be covered, but the turkey had jumped on it and pulled the netting down. So, all of my bantams (including call ducks) have to stay locked up. I don't think the hawk is big enough to grab an orpington. He had a barred pattern to his feathers. Not sure what kind that is. Probably an immature one of some kind, Coopers maybe?

Bbp, my lorp that everyone nthought was orpington was killed by a hawk. It just sat there eating her. I would not be so sure... I have no idea what type it is. But we had to chase it out again last week. We were all out there. I got the dogs all going after it. It was stuck in the pines for a bit. Hopefully that will take care of things for a litle bit. Only thing we have lost since the chessy beingon gaurd is the bantems. I think it s the hawk.

Why do chickens decide that this is a good time to molt...it is getting cold and I swear that I see teh molters shivering...or is that just me? I have two maybe three that are looking really bare right now. Really??? Well getting 3-4 eggs now that lights are on...not great, but better than the one I was getting . Still have a few bantams waiting to lay and a RSL that is close. Have an EE from my april hatc that still has not started laying...Add that to my three molters and you have alot of nothing! sigh... with all the great pumpkins and guts they are getting..you would think they would be putting out some eggs by now! I posted on facebook to the moms group to send extra guts and pumpkins my way and they are trickling in so lots of good treats .

Now I am cleaning out my closets and such and posting things on craiglist. Lots of kids toys that look almost new that have to go. Games and books too. Yup going to finance christmas with selling the old stuff that did not go at rummage sale time this summer. Kidsare cleaning their closets to make way for new stuff. Makes e feel good to clean out hte messes and make some cash. I am one of the crazy people who clearance shops and picked up a ton of toys the past fwe year and got some good deals like Legos at half off and selling them for more than I paid. Even found some at rummage sales for next to nothing new in box. So little profit for me. Anyway... getting creative with money! A few months off work hurt a little but doing ok now.

Want to help my mom but not sure how. She is stubborn... needs her teeth fixed but it is going to cost alot ot get a bridbge put in so trying to find solutions for her.
And I need to figure out crafts which are not my thing...Morgan got cool craft kits like the loom bracelets and and crochet flowers kits for her bday and I cant figure them out. Now she wants to learn to sew... taking to my mohter in laws for that one and trying to find a playdate to helwith the rainbow loom/ ugh. Life needs to slow down.

Ok my life is a little bonkers, but loving hearing from everyone. Saw Jim lurking not too long ago...where is he!
Loving teh pictures too!

This is the perfect time of year to moult..not too cold and they should not be raising babys..I have three silly birds who disagree and one should be hatching any day now. Thank goodness moult is not that long.
It is good for the hens to have an egg slow down period. They live longer and recover faster from a moult the next time if they have the egg break. Some breeds lay all through the winter and some simply do not and need the light. You might think about getting a few leghorns for next year winter laying. Dotties lay all winter too but feed conversion is not as good as those leghorns. I have a Mille Fleur leghorn and hope its a pullet..time will tell. My other leghorns are getting pretty old and I have not replaced them.

JJ I sure miss having little kids and scooping out pumpkins and roasting the seeds. Never saved any they all got eaten... Ohhh the delight of stinking your hand into a cold slimy pumpkin

Nothing new in my world waiting for a bunch of pullets to start laying also... What do you think the time line on Cuckoo's laying is? TO were these a July hatch?? Hard remembering all this stuff. If so probably the dark of winter? Also have an Olive Egger, Delaware and Cherry Egger think those also were early July hatches I so love getting those first eggs... I will say this my RIR never skipped a beat and layed regularly all winter long, kinda miss those girls

Good thinking on the toy switch over Kristi, nice the kids are helping, I was the same way we have a tri-level with no basement I never had the luxery of extra space for a lot of things. If they didnt play with it in 1 - 2 months time poof it was gone.

Have a good day all...

Yup...I need to get back to some solid layers...I love having some banties in there too. The kids adore them and hoping to do 4H with them next year. Will have to check out leghorns and RIR...we have a bantam leghorn whic is a sweetie, but if we get 100 eggs a year from her, I would be surprised. But she is so well loved by my daughter she is never going anyway.
Yes momg... clear them out. I have a process where we keep them upstairs when well loved and then move them downstairs(whcihc we dont go as ften) in the toy closet there and if not played with after a month or two, goes in my rummage pile! It is my winter plan. Clean out a closet a week and put it in basement rummage pile to be organzied after Xmas! we will see how that works.

Those pumkins are awesome JJ...have not seen them that big. and dd's haircut still looks stinking cute!

My Marans started laying at 10 months or so. I have a February hatch that is red and has not started yet. I think it will be any day since she is doing a ton of crying.

Evening To Everyone.... just walked in from hunting. Suzie was upset and explained that a fricken coopers hawk nailed one of the blue ameraucanas that was in hard molt. They just left the back of the house after their late treat of boss...dang hawks. Now all the birds will be on lockdown. I have to many that I don't want to lose for nothing.

Thanks for the kind words bl4.

Nice pic bbp. They always show up in the dark on the trailcams...prolly the reason they make it to maturity.

I'm gonna donate a .bunch of carrots to the Marion Community Meal that they serve on Thanksgiving.... Folks that don't have a place to go will attend. I'm gonna donate enough so that they have enough. That will take care of what is still in the ground...prolly dig em inaday or two.

Yep, I'm only getting one pullet egg a day....more than one is laying....but comeon girls.

Stay Safe...bigz
