Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good morning all and Happy Valentine's Day too. My DH actually said it to me FIRST! Of cours he was leaving for work and I was still asleep! LOL. He had to go to Chicago today after being in MS all week. Good thing he likes to drive...that would make me crazy!

Nothing new here since last night since I havent been out yet--oh wait, I didnt post last night--well then:

Yesterday my younge Royal Palm Tom took a hard flight down from the rafters and broke his neck or something. When I came around the corner he was on the ground dead! I quickly bled him out and then when I was cleaning him I found that his liver lobes were each the size of my fist! They looked more like they should have been out of a goat! The liver was not the right color either; kind of run through with fatty looking spots. I wanted to call Deli but my phone lost most of it's numbers in the change-over. DD22 gave me a site from college on meat poultry and inspection and from what I could understand the liver would be condemned but the carcass is fine. I fed the liver to the outside feral cat. I think he wont need to eat for a week! So we are having turkey sometime this weekend I think. I will brine it again like I did the wild one.

That is my exciting news. YEs CInd I am sad that we didnt get the goop party going too! We should try for this summer for sure. I really need to try that stuff!
Gotta get another cuppa and head out---much work today. Have a good one--I hope everyone gets some goodies today! TerriO

Happy Valentines Day To Everyone! You did good yesterday bl4. Those potatoes sound goodie....

Congrats on the hatch cuties, and I finally did the snow here a minute ago...it was painful, and I did a good enough job but not a great job for sure...pretty soon mother nature should be melting the wicked stuff, I would think, and leave me off the hook!

Ah to be young and get Lucky on special days like today....

Later...bigz

question on maremmas, was following the thread..... I am having some silkies hatching soon (hopefully) will have a flock of them this spring one way or another... and this summer we are getting a couple belted galloway calves, and a couple feeder pigs (going all out!)
smile.png
long story short we have a lot of coyotes near us, they are not shy it seems, will be right up perhaps a 100 yards from the house? we have two dogs, a german shepherd, who is the world's biggest baby, I have never encountered a gsd like her, she barks at the coyotes, but runs from pretty much everything. we have a little cocker spaniel, who thinks she is toughest thing around, but I think the coyotes want to eat her.... just worried about our animals that we'll be getting and how hungry the coyotes will be.... would I benefit from a dog like a maremma guarding my herd of animals (chickens, cattle, pigs) I worry about the belties as we're getting them young and they're smaller anyhow. and the chickens will be in a coop, but I still worry. I also have 3 small kids, so still worry. I wish our german shepherd would step up, but am afraid she is who she is. our neighbors from down the road a few miles got a new dog, a sheep dog mix, it came running over to visit, me and the kids were standing there when it ran up, my german shepherd ran the other way.... the little dog chased her all over the yard, she was just terrified, while my cocker chased the two of them, lol.

sorry, wrote a book here!! anyhow, just wanted some advice. do I end up with 3 dogs or should my livestock be ok? (and kids!)

Welcome!!!

We have Coyotes..We put up a 6 foot fence and at first they paced the length on the fence and now i do not see them any more. I don't worry about Coyotes and chickens anymore.. worry about Hawks and coons. I have not had coon problems for years but they can be persistent. I use ammonia soaked tennis balls and that works if I remember to put out fresh. Coyotes are not a problem unless you give them a feed source. So do not toss out dead carcasses. We have a neighbor who uses her back 40 to dispose of dead animals...Yes it completes the cycle but it also attracts predators. I have spoken to her about it but she feels it is worth the risk to feed the hungry...

What kind of silkies do you have? Do you show them?

Sorry for your loss

hi, I am hatching silkie eggs right now, planning on my kids showing in 4H, altho my oldest is almost 6, so will be a little while. I used to have barred rocks prior to kids. I have 19 viable eggs in my incubator right now. my second hatch attempt. last attempt was a bust. ended up with one viable egg, hatched with it's intestines outside it's tummy.

this time I have 19 viable, hatch day is 26th, excited!

we just seem to have so many darn coyotes, they are nuts! I think I worry more about the cattle than the chickens, as their coop is gonna be like fort knox by the time we're done.... it's a work in progress as it's not finished yet, my DH has until end of april to finish it, well we do (is a family project) my silkies when hatched will live securly in the house with us until coop is ready and it's warm. will help be our motivation to do it and do it right! putting deer netting over the top of the coop also, had read somewhere about that and sounds good to me as we have hawks like crazy too. coons aren't bad by us as my german shepherd and the cocker DO both enjoy chasing anything smaller than themselves, so no squirrels, coons, or rabbits really near our house.

thank you for your input!!! MUCH appreciated.

ahhh the sun is out here now! finally! then we get 1-2" snow tomorrow... BOOOOOOO!!!!!

BigZ, I bet you get lucky enough. Thanks for the compliment, that family of mine inhaled that meatloaf.......

Happy Valentines everyone!!!!

The kittens are tearing around like mad today..... I am enjoying the sunshine.

The city is asking all residents to run the water due to the depth of the frost in the ground. They say they will adjust the bills.... I won't hold my breath on that but unfortunately if anything happens with the water mains the homeowner will be charged for the repairs. So right now the water is flowing down the drain........ ugh

Pretty boring day here, just cruising the job boards hoping I get a phone call. Still waiting for my UI to show up too...... great system.

good luck on this hatch..don't worry..a few of us have silkies and we can help you out with silkie addiction!!

good afternoon, picked up some gas and have the heater on Ollie.. should be ready to start as soon as I find out where Annie hid my one piece snow suit ..

I might have to change boots also.. these seem to be a bit wet inside..

the Maremma can be taught to watch just about anything.. My male just watches the homestead in general.. also watches the next door neighbors ..

we have coyotes and any other animal that travels the river banks.. I have not had any animal except a rabbit close to the house.. the male dog does not chase, but he barks if anything gets within a couple hundred yards of the house.. that keeps most animals away..

we do not have small children here very often.. so our male dog has not had a lot of contact with kids.. he is fine with adults as soon as I say, "it's OK " ..

our female is pretty much kid proof ..

how these puppies will turn out depends on how they are raised..

You do not play tug o war with the puppies.. you do not let a puppy chew on your hand, you take food away from them to teach them that they do not growl about it.. then give the food back as their reward.. If they growl for any reason, you have my permission to slap them up a bit .

put them on a leash as soon as they can walk.. teach them to sit and stay, back up and step aside..

do not let the dog in within 15 minutes of his barking.. not to do so teaches them to bark when they want to come in,, only let them in when YOU want them in ..

both of my dogs allow anyone to step over them,, some dogs are not comfortable with that ..

I do what ever I think will irritate the dogs .. so they tolerate just about anything ..

I am not going to put these pups out in the cold .. they were born inside the house and they are not acclimated to the outdoors yet.. the big dogs have their choice of sleeping outside or in.. Dora stays in because the pups are in.. daddy dog spends lots of nights outside..

another thing.. maremma bark on and off all night long.. that is their job.. If you cannot stand the barking, then this is not the dog for you..
