Thanks for the info! I'm not sure that I could cope with bees crawling all over me. I've only worked with them once and it was with a suit. I've got a local friend with bees and I think I'm gonna try working with him and his wife first before committing to it for myself. Keep me updated on your progress! Congrats.Fernie - Glad that you and DH are OK, I'm sure that was pretty stressful.
Wildsam - Nice duck pictures
Chickenscratch - Honeybees... we got them from a guy in Big Bend, Andy Hemken. We purchased all of our hive equipment and clothing through Dadant in Watertown, WI. I installed the hives, with some help from my DH, in my normal clothing and a bee veil. I had read that they would not be aggressive yet since they have nothing to defend at this time. I wore no gloves and since I was using a spray bottle with sugar water in it, I had sugar on my hands, the bees were crawling on my hands to eat the sugar... none of them attempted to sting me. I was more excited about installing these packages than afraid. My DD15 watched the 1st install from around 15 feet away, the 2nd install from around 100 ft away. It was crazy how many bees were buzzing around.
Jim - Nice to see you back.
Spent the whole day outside, dividing my current chick coop yard into 2 (I have a 4x6 coop and a makeshift integration coop in the same enclosed area).. now I have them split so I can raise 2 different pure breeds at the same time, separately. Whoo hoo. Decided I'm getting out of the selling eggs at $3.50 a dozen and into raising a breed to improve it's quality. Sounds more enjoyable to me and I've been selling eggs to people at work since 2009, just tired of itAlso, cleaned out the coop in my backyard, finally thawed out enough to get started. It was disgusting, thought I might pass out from the smell. I told my DH that I think I lost a years worth of my life working around that sh....
That's good news about the 2 dogs!good afternoon,
I just got off of the phone with the lady who bought Bo and the puppy.. she is so thrilled with them both..
the puppy has already bonded with her chickens.. that is the main reason she wanted a puppy..
Bo is just going to be the family pet and guard against lions and things larger..
she is going to send me some pictures.. she lives near Sheboygan (sp)
She did not tell her DH that she was bringing two dogs home with her.. I asked her how he took the news.. he only found out when she got home.. she said all he did was close his eyes for a moment .. Now he has accepted them and is happy to have them..
after a few days, Bo chewed off his tie strap.. more or less to say, enough.. I know where I belong .
He is free to roam the property now.. the puppy is free also, but she stays right with the chickens..

good morning, half finished with a cuppa. it is already starting to get cold in the cup.. the power to run the pump and heater for the floor radiant heat in the sun room and to this room are on the same circuit.. It was getting too hot in the sun room with the sun shining in, so Annie threw the breaker .. as a result my heater is off and being in the basement, it is cool in here..
maybe I should fire up the incubators.. then it gets up to around 80*F in this room..
NOT ready to start any hatching just yet, so I will continue to drink tepid coffee for awhile.
bees: had a hive for two summers.. caught a wild swarm . It was a ball of bees larger than a basketball..
honey bees are not out to sting anyone ,, they are too busy working.. people should be a lot more like that ..
If you are not allergic, bee stings are not that bad if you really think about it.. the thought of getting stung is what puts most people off..
bee stings are supposedly good remedy for Arthfitis (sp) ..
One tip I was told by the "bee man", set the hive is such a way to avoid making the bees fly across a busy road.. too many get hit by cars ..
Keep plenty of water close to the hive so they do not have to go to the neighbors swimming pool for water..
I would gladly provide a choice spot to anybody wanting to set a hive..
when we had the bees, we had just a terrific garden ..

I have rheumatoid arthritis and fibro, but I don't think I am willing to get stung over and over to see if it helps.I would love to find a wild swarm that big (I don't think my DH would, but I would). We once found a small swap about 10 years ago, but didn't know enough about them at that time.
Yes, I have heard that honeybee vemem is good if you have arthritis, makes your joint pain go away... - I can't wait to see if it works or not (I once was diagnosed with fibromyalgia (not clinically, but that's what the doc said), then the next doc took it off my chart since it wasn't clinically proven and now, through back x-rays when I was in a car accident, they show I have arthritis in my neck and down my spine... yoga works great, but perhaps bee stings will make it even better.
Wow, that's good advice about being hit by cars.... I have mine in my orchard, about 30 trees of apples, plum, cherry, peach, mulberry, grapes. I have fruit all over my farm, just loved the days as a pre-teen, walking through my parents property picking fruit from trees, bushes and vines and veggies out of the garden. My goal is to always have something around to pick and eat and a flower in bloom from spring to winter.
Water isn't a problem, I have a stream on my property!! Was just down there this weekend, we had a storm come through and steal my DH minnow/crawfish trap last fall. We found it and it had minnows and crawfish living in it. He is now ready to hit the streams/rivers with DD15.
