If you start with chicks and never add outside birds to your flock, it is called a closed flock. They are the safest flock to have....one could add another tractor and start with some more chicks of the breeds you want. I agree that bringing in new birds adds a host of new problems....a lot of folks do it, however I would never recommend the practice....raising your own chicks is what I would do, and others don't mind bringing in whatever the other flock carries, and have good luck, I'm not doing it though....just sayin.... one can roll the dice and see.

Yup! I was thinking about building a regular coop, getting some chicks and keeping them in there and having my flock now in the tractor. Thanks for the advice....do you know if I got a few ducks the same age as the chicks if I could keep them all together?

I think it does have leaves in the summer.....I remember last spring all the trees in the front (this being one of them) did not produce leaves or flowers until late June. Have only been on the property for 1 years....so will have to wait and see.

Nope...not a good idea trying to keep ducks with chicks....ducks are super messy and sloppy and you would never have a dry coop for the chickens that require one. Keep em separate.

Ok, thanks for that. So here is my day. My daughter in law got a dog a few months ago, she was a rescue from a puppy mill in TN. Everytime we have left her inside the house when we are gone, she tears up something....we have two other dogs, one is completely ruled out cause he is mine.....and he is only 10#.....so her dog took a planter that I had sitting on the kitchen table, it is about a foot long and 4 " wide, filled with choc mint.......she pulled it off the table, along with a whole lemon merangue (sp?) pie and another 1/2 pie, ate the pies, spread the dirt all over the kitchen and part of the living room....beginning to dislike that dog. So, how was everyone elses day?????

x2 on the crate training.
Our 7 month old pup is sitting in his crate right now - he wants his treat dang it! He thinks that if he goes in there he will get a treat ... maybe it was a bad idea to give him a treat when we put him to bed.

good evening,

my cutting back on livestock is going well..

I called Jim P and told him his 3 ducklings are ready to come home,, he said, why don't you just keep them as souveniers from me ?? so now I am a proud owner of 3 ducks..

then I get a call from someone who has been buying chickens from me for the past few years..

his wife has farmer's lung or something,, Dr.'s can't pin it down,, she has to get rid of all her pets because of dust etc.. can I take her two pigmy goats ? what do you say ? NO ?? they will be dropped off next week..

Frankie is lethargic , sort of, today,, I think she will have her pups tonight .. she got away from Annie this morning and headed for under the parked truck.. Annie caught her just in time..

I sold 3 guinea keets today,, turns out that Val ended up with 3 chicks and 2 keets.. I thought I had them all caught.. I will sort through the chicks tomorrow and see what I can come up with..

I am always sorry to hear about bad behaving dogs.. mine would not take even raw meat off of the kitchen table..

why don't you just tie the dog outside when you leave ?
or send the dog home ?

dogs catch on real fast to routines.. you started a routine.. now you have to figure out a way to get out of it..
