Welcome chickengrandma! Happy to have ya.
I seem to have become the Red Alert member here, sorry about that. But if you live in or near Brown County, this is important.
We moved to Greenleaf from Appleton last spring, and have just found out about the proposed Ledge Wind Farm project. The company Invenergy is planning to build the state's largest wind turbine farm in Brown Co, starting this fall. The turbines, about 100 of them, will be located the towns of Holland, Morrison, Wrightstown, and Glendale. We live in the town of Morrison.
Currently, the setbacks for these 400+ foot turbines is 1000 feet from residences. New research is proving this number to be completely inadequate. The turbines produce audible noise, low-frequency noise, and shadow flicker. All these can cause adverse health effects in humans, such as migraines, sleep disturbance, nausea, motion sickness, and vomiting. Turbines can throw ice, break, and malfunction. I watched a video clip of a turbine literally blow to pieces when it's brake stopped working. They can interfere with TV, cellphone, and radio signals as well.
Animals are affected too, having much more acute senses than people; decreased production in livestock, reproductive abnormalities, stress on the fight/flight response, and even death have been recorded in animals near wind farms. Wildlife often leave the areas.
One of the most distressing facts for me is that flight for life helicopters will not land in wind farms due to safety reasons. Patients must be moved outside the wind farm area by ambulance first. When every second counts in an accident, this is unacceptable. The project as proposed will cover 47,000 acres; that's a lot of area to be cut off from Eagle III.
Property values will take a hit, too. And acres of farmland will be ruined when placing the turbines, as well as the aesthetics of the countryside. Unfortunately, turbines are very inefficient, only about 30%. I just don't see how the positives can ever outweigh the negatives of this project. The state legislature recently passed a lovely little piece of law that says wind turbines cannot be banned, so the hands of the town boards are tied. (Incidentally, several town board members in 2 of the townships have already signed contracts to host turbines - conflict of interest, wouldn't you say?)
It seems we need to converge on the Public Service Commission and let them know our deep concerns about living in/near a wind farm. They are the ones who have the power to set the standards for these farms in Wisconsin. We have already left comments on the PSC site.
http://psc.wi.gov/ The docket # is 9554-CE-100.
We have also joined the grassroots group Brown County Residents for Responsible Wind Energy.
http://bccrwe.com/ This group has tons of good info about wind farms. My family is not against alternative energies, but they must be properly sited to not cause health or safety problems for people or animals. Placing turbines thickly in residential and agricultural areas is just plain dangerous.
This got really long, I apologize. But we just found out about this a couple weeks ago, and are trying desperately to slow down the process so good decisions can be made.
Take care, everyone, and have a good day!
