you can use any kind of light bulb.. 60Watt is usually enough for a small batch of chicks.

I am not a fan of heat bulbs.. they are expensive, and they burn out too soon in my opinion.

You are much farther ahead to buy a small heater with a fan and a thermostat for about $18.oo. about the cost of 3 heat bulbs.. but they last for a long time.. and they won't explode and burn your house down..

get yourself some starter crumbles for the baby chicks.. you can get it medicated or non-medicated. I am not so organically inclined, so I get the medicated ..

I do not do any electrolytes .. they just get fresh clean water every day..

and brace yourself, baby chicks die.. don't make yourself go crazy trying to figure out why. some just die ..

Excellent advice Jim

Knock on wood but I have had pretty decent luck with the heat bulbs. I do like using them for the brooders in the colder months, but now that it is getting so warm out, you are probably right about using a lower watt incandescent. It'll definitely help out on saving on the electric bill.

I don't know about a heater in a brooder unless you had a really big brooder with lots of chicks like you do, Jim. I like the heating pads they sell for rabbits for in my brooders, but that is because I usually only brood 6-7 chicks at a time. My chicks seem to like them too. This one is great for a small amount of chicks & is only 25 watts.

I don't normally use the electros either because I hatch my chicks. They aren't shipped. But they are good to have on hand just in case they are or get stressed or have diarrhea, etc.

yean, but will they eat leftovers ?

I heard the coons like marshmallows..
I use peanut butter on mouse traps.. they have to really work to get it all licked off the trigger and that extra push is all it takes to snap them,,
maybe a little peanut butter in the box trap on the peddle will help lure them in from the yummy smell..

I heard they like marshmallows too. And bacon grease.

Fox and Raccoons nasty to be sure... Raccoons are vicious we used bread and swathed it with bacon grease... one time though we got a possum.... possums playing dead really make a nasty mess of a live trap...
Hope everyone can make their runs secure...
One another note anyone deal with Vent Gleet? I have a second case I think??? My production red aka Cherry Egger with red bum and no feathers where her fluffy butt should be also pooing nasty yellow... so I have treated her with Lotrimin and Scarlex

she seems to be perking up today but we got this egg today, not sure though if it is hers. Has anyone seen one laid cracked like this? I opened and there are meat spots and the albumen was like water. The chalazae did not appear to be connected to the yolk either....She is only a little over 2 years old. I do have some penicillin I could try. Just makes we wonder I read Gleet is not supposed to be infectious but it can't be coincidense that I have had 2 birds with same symptoms in 6 weeks time. I have treated all the flock for lice using sevin and DE in the dusting area. We have dealt once before with infectious bronchititis but the egg production has not dropped like last time. Hoping that I applied the Lotrimin at a time when then egg was forming and it had to be re-sealed, making it so cracked looking.

Also Cuties at what age do you think i will be able to tell the boys from the girls... Do the boys show early signs of a tail/feather? If so I have 4 cockrels and 2 hens.... derned the luck. They hatched on 5/21 just looking for an early guestimate :)
Night all

CC,

No one was my Ameraucana, and she is well and fluffy butted again never had an egg issue with her despite the fact that her vent actually prolapsed.
This production red although her bottom looks the same as the Ameraucana doesn't have the sickening sweet smell I noticed before...

To everyone in this forum: I have been following this thread for a couple of months now and I'm a bit disappointed. Obviously most of you have been very practical in your breed selections, you work hard, you celebrate with friends and family. Where is the chicken enabling? The guilty confessions of dysfunctional behavior? Surely there are some here who want to confess to buying some silly kind of bird. Moreover, don't you want to list each frivolous breed (along with age, sex, number available, and price)? Anybody? Just let it all out, you'll feel better. And don't forget to mention your location or distance to major city.
Well I know I'm too far away(hour north of Eau Claire) but you asked for it.
Blue Laced Red Wyandottes, Iowa Blue, EE, Salmon Faverolle, Swedish Flower Hen, White Wyandotte, Speckled Sussex, Speckled Sussex Projects(sons 4h birds), Cream Crested Legbars, Silver Laced Wyandotte, Buckeye, Blue Laced Red Wyandotte Bantam, Delaware, Dominique, Lav Orpington, Ameraucana, LF Cochin, Black Australorp, misc Ancona x ducks, Toulouse, Embden & a Canadian Hybrid Geese(goslings very soon, have 3 Goose sitting on eggs); those are just what I can recall off the top of my head. For chicks I have for sale: Button & Cortunix Quail, BLRW, SS, IB, SFxIB, SS F2 project, SS, BYM and a Layer/meat chick(Prod Red & Black, BO, BR w a WR roo) prices vary on breed & age. I will be at the Lil Outlaw Swap this Saturday in Fall Creek.

Thanks, Jim.....I seem to have developed an OCD with these darn chicks, but, I will certainingly reign that in. Are you talking about an electric heater?? They will be out in the garage, because of the animals I have in the house. Do you put the heater in the tote or kids swimming pool with them? That seem kinda dangerous. Please explain.

Hi All!

Looks like other people covered anything I would have added.

Nothing new here.

Night All!

OK, there was something. Could that egg have been an old one that got kicked around and buried, then happen to resurface? That white looks like from a cracked egg that was around a few days.
