Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I've also had eggs shipped in twice. One batch was bubble wrapped. The other was wrapped in paper towels. Both had all eggs intact. The first batch had just one out of 16 that did not hatch. The second is in the bator now with fingers crossed.
Unfortunately I believe the condition they arrive in has a lot to do with how they are handled during shipping.
chicken first aid kit. I keep vet wrap, gauss, Blu koat, bacitracin (like neosporin but non medicated ) Epsom salt, tweasers, human toe nail trimmer, electrolytes, . I think that is everything ;)
fun stuff here. I am excited for our visit with Delisha later today. Cc are you coming?
vaca will be wonderful! And much needed.

Ok I had a pullet that was a little bullied and hid and hurt her leg and once I pulled out my med kit I see she has bug eggs near her vent...quite a few...and I know at least one other bird had some also. Are these Lice or mites or both or does it matter? Would you just spray them down, treat water, se in dust...all the above? I think I should bomb everyone some how to make sure the coop is bug free for fall..your thoughts

I am quite new to chickens, could you take photos of these bug eggs, so I know what to look for in the future. Or, are they so little you would not be able to see them in a picture.?

The molting has begun here, too. I'm at one egg per day right now with only two of 13 hens yet to lay their first.
So, Irishrovr, I have two hens here that are molting, so I should not expect them to lay eggs? How long does that last? We moved over the older hens that we got from the lady down the road, yesterday. Only have one nasty hen that chases the RIR and original hens we had. She better watch it, cause I'm OK now with putting her in the freezer even tho she is quite pretty. DS put up a tarp over the end of the run for shade for the birds yesterday, and hung the grit/shell feeders. We have a water and feeder outside under the tarp and a water feeder inside the coop. Only one of the new birds lays an egg. The lady did tell us that one of the birds is 5 years old, but, the rest are 3 and under. We now have 13 hens and 2 roos......the roo flew over the fence when we tried to get them from the tractor to the coop. DS went over to the neighbors because the roo got on their side of the fence. Lovely to have neighbors with kids, they caught him and brought him home. So now we are all as snuggly as a bug at this place.

@Cindlady
Thanks. We messaged the seller last night and DH2B got a reply today and he said the seller sounded very nice and said we'll figure this out but that they have jury duty today. So as long as this gets worked out in a timely manner and they don't just disappear until its too late I think I will give the seller a good rating. I'm new to chickens but I don't think I'm unreasonable I know Alabama is far away and that the eggs probably went through heck getting here. I know that. So I'm trying to be patient. I don't think this person is trying to scam me the box says a hatchery name. And they took the time to place decorative stickers on the box smiley faces hearts and such. I think it's a business just getting going.

Hi All,

Looking for some advice. Yesterday it was time to clean out the chicken run. Wanted to clean up the bits of food and bedding that fell on the ground. I went in there with a small garden rake and the 5 girls (2 Buff Orps and 3 Black Lorps) went absolutely nuts. One even crawled up the wire wall and the others were trying to squeeze through the fencing. The second I removed the rake then calmed down. So I am sure the rake freaked them out. Any advice on how to get them to tolerate the rake so I can clean the run? I am a true backyard chicken farmer so I don't have the room to remove the girls to clean the run. The only thing I can think of is to heard them into the hen house and shut the door for a few minutes while I clean. It is a small run and does not have to be cleaned up very often but I would like to keep it neat and pretty, but if it is going to stress the chickens out I will have to come up with a different plan.

Thanks

Tim and the Magnificent 5

Tim & 5 -

First keep the rake where they can see it. Keep your rake movements slow as they get used to the movement of the rake. Make sure they have room to maneuver away from the rake - i.e., work in a big circle around the inside perimeter of the run.

Good luck!

I am so excited for Cuties visit today. I have cooked up a storm.

I am only about 1000 posts behind. I am not going to read them..sorry

Happy Birthdays, Happy Anniversary's, Congrats! And welcome to the group.
I hope this covers all the good stuff. I don't wanna know the bad stuff!!!!

I am still looking for a house so I can keep some of the chickens. I am down to just a trio of adult Gold laced and a pair of white silkies. I have groups of chicks from each and I will keep breeding from the ones I have kept for now.

My last group of BBS chicks are going out when the weather cools off.

I am looking for Standard APA Black Orpingtons. I would like a pair.

If anyone is interested in showing at APA shows and would like to help get the Gold Laced recognized, please send me an email at [email protected].
We have a very small group in Wisconsin and we sure could use about 10 more good people who want to show. The Wisconsin Internationals are not being held this year, but get those incubators fired up for next year!! You have time to hatch for Cocks-Hen-Pullets-Cockerels.

CC? are you coming? I sure hope so..everyone come on down!! Cuties is also bring food!!
We are grilling out!! call me and please come!! everyone one has time to pack up the car and get driving!!

Miss you all!!
Hugs and kisses!!

It really does not matter..lice or mites are horrible and it is best to keep them at bay. Broody hens seem to get them the easiest here, since they sit on the darn nest all day long and do not dust bath. I use natural product, but my grandpa used a good dipping solution and just held chickens under the water to get all the feathers wet (not the head) he used a qtip and sort of washed the face with it..let the birds go to dry on there own.
I use Neem oil. It is found in any plant section. It is used to kill bugs on plants with out killing the plant. I spray it all over thee coop and make sure every nook and cranny is saturated. I also do all of the roost areas, nest boxes and I make sure I burn all bedding. This needs to be repeted in 7-9 days since the eggs will hatch. The Neem oil does not kill eggs and not many things kill those suckers except toxic poisons. Unfortunately mice are vehicles for these nasty lil critters. They don't harm the mice but take rides from coops to coops to make sure they spread them selves around. Having good dusting areas for the birds is essential to keep them from over whelming and making the birds sick and weak. I use wood ash in the dusting areas. As long as the birds can get a good fine dust right down to the skin it keeps them off pretty good.

I had lice recently..what a pain in the butt..It took a bunch of work, but I have not seen one stinking bug since. They seem to like my nesting broody's best. I need to keep a better watch on them.

Good luck and I hope you kill them good!!!
