Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

You guys are great. Thanks for the info. I am so proud of my chickens....The chicken lady down the road will be bringing over 5 more birds. Wellingtons and black Cochins? Heard of both of them but not sure what they look like. So I will have quite a range of different breeds. That will bring my batch to 19. DS will finish winterizing the coop this week end and we will get one of those heaters, a thermal cube(we will have to ask at FF what that is)..Hey, ya know FF is being sold, right? And DS said a LED light is what you are thinking of Jim, is that right?
LED it is,, I just get these mental burps..

I didn't hear about FF being sold..

If F&F doesn't know about the thermal cubes, I got mine at Menard's in the plumbing dept..
You might have to ask a few different clerks where they are because a lot of the clerks do not know what they are.. then they tell you that they don't carry them,, been there, done that..

I think you can pick them up on Amazon, too..

I got the septic tank ready to cover with straw.. put the chicken pluckers away..
Filled in a couple of holes the dogs dug during a boredom episode ..

then I had to come into the house and cool off.. what a great day this is weatherwise..

I put the chicken plucker on craig's list in La Crosse, Green Bay and Wausau.. $1200.oo..

It might be a little late in the season for selling one.. but oh well.. I can always use it..

Mental burps, at our age, is called Sometimers. But, to tell the truth, I wouldn't want to be any other age in this day and age.

Good day everyone. First timer here and will be a first timer with chickens. The wife has been on me for a few years now to get some chic's for the backyard. Well I want to do this for her and do it right. Started looking at pre-fab coops and decided that may not be the best way to go. So here I am looking for advice and so forth.

Mainly want the chickens for laying eggs. The plan is to get 4 hens all together which is the max I can have in the city. Not sure what breed yet or anything. Do I need to know that before building a coop? How big of a coop do I need? I don't want it overly huge but I want it to be sufficient at the same time. Need it to look somewhat nice as I entertain in my backyard as well. Would really like to integrate the coop in the same area I have my garden as well. Any concerns with that?

I am sure there are more questions to come but just thought I would introduce myself. So Hello all!

Eric

Hi All!

Stacy... looks like you might be in by winter!

Delish...Hope the house works out. I doesn't look that small, at least for just you. Did you already check about chickens there? Across the road I believe is still farm land but the house is residential area. Ordinances may have changed.

Nice day, wish I got more done. Hoping to hit the Farmers Market.

Night All.

I should have heat today Cindy if all goes well. Found a gas furnace on CL for $100 and needed some other things for the house so off to Eau Claire I went ALL DAY. Going thru Cornell seen someone was throwing out a cabinet, must of been from a bathroom due to the tp holder still attached to a board and also a 3 tier shelving system all solid wood. Had to grab as the cabinet was not very deep and would work great in the kitchen for staple food storage. Also near my daughters new place in Chippewa someone else was throwing out a set of treated wood stairs, work great as I'm currently using a brick to get in house. Ended up going to Goodwill in Hallie, got 2 matching wood chairs for the kitchen and a really nice Columbia winter coat and snow pants for Anellia for this winter. I did buy her a set earlier this year garage saling but it's put away somewhere and could not find. I'm sure I'll find it now. Stopped at Building Hope which I won't be doing again any time soon. For one their prices are near as high as buying new, and they must price them according to the income in Eau Claire and not other smaller surrounding areas. I did get a few things I needed but ended up spending $70 on not much, their card reader was broken so no receipt to compare but did catch the clerk scanning this binder for prices and it didn't match was was priced on the item so I had not way to compare back at the first items and was near the end by the time I caught him doing this. Then over to Hope Gospel I picked up a Tinkerbell Desk for Anellias room after that to Savers where I got a really beautiful little oak dresser that was going to use in Anellias room but worried she might ruin it so not sure where that will go yet. And last stop was Goodwill in Eau Claire where I picked up a rolling metal storage unit and a Princess toybox for Anellias room. All the bedding/curtains/carpet/lamps and etc are Tinker or Princesses so finding things to match was nice and she loves them. I also found a few more Chicken decorations to add.
The furnace is in the way back in the load. Its a 1995 model and came with all the instructions and such. It says it's a 50,000 btu furnace and the guy said you need 50 btu per sq ft to heat. He figured my dimentions and said I needed around 15k btus, so per him I should be able to heat the house ok for this winter. I plan on figuring something better for next year, possible pellet stove or something but for not this will have to work.

Friend said it looked like Sanford & Sons, heck I don't care. I have a truck I might as well use it for it's purpose.

The Sanford and sons thing is hilarious but it's more like the clampetts are moving lol. I have the exact same truck and she's been loaded down the past few weeks and hauling barn boards and Windows and steel for my new roof. Finished all the outside this morning and tomorrow at 6 am when I get done with work it's game on for the roosts and nesting boxes. A few finishing insulation touches and were in business. The ladies might even get to stay in the new pad as early as tomorrow night! Now to sell my other coop I just built this spring. I thought I'd be happy with 4 chickens.....we all know how that goes so I needed to go bigger

Welcome to the Cheeseheads Eric! Most of the prefab coops are flimsy and way overpriced. You will want it large enough for the birds to be able to have room to walk around and peck and stretch. With the water and feeder taking space....I would go bigger....it's nice to walk inside...8x8 would be nice... www.abuilding4u.com ...these will last a lifetime and look nice for the neighbors...just sayin.
