Holy snowbound, Batman.

51390_snow_2011-02-02_3.jpg

My dog yard just got a lot smaller with the 4 foot fence completely drifted over on the north side. Jesse says he'll stick near the house, thank you very much.

Broke through the drifts to get out to the chickens and found a 3 foot drift around the coop, but the door itself clear to the ground. Thank you wind vortex. The pen is drifted in with 2-3 feet of snow, can't see the heated water bucket, it's under there somewhere. The coop is in lockdown and I had put a bucket of water and fresh food in the coop last night. Broke the ice out this am, fed the chooks some peanut butter sandwiches, tortillas, and BOSS.

The driveway is half clear and half 3 foot drifts. Good thing we cancelled all of our appointments at work for today, the plow hasn't even thought of coming near our road (and we're usually one of the first they hit). Looking down the road, I've got no reason to hack away at the driveway yet! LOL

Did get mail from Sandhill that my Iowa Blue chicks (and a smattering of other fun things for the layer pen) will be coming April 5th.

Hauled in enough wood for the day, fire's rolling steady. Stay warm and safe everyone!

first off, build it way bigger than you think you need..

I have a criteria of what a coop should contain..

I have 3 large ones and have yet to build the perfect one..

here is what I think a coop should have:

concrete floor, with the door raised above ground level by about 6 inches..

A door wide enough to push a wheelbarrow through without ripping the back of your hands off on the door jambs..

insulated,, hard surfaced walls and ceiling,,(I have these)

ventilated, operating window OK.. (I have these)

a small door for the chickens to go in and out.. but it has to seal up tightly when closed for winter.. (I have these)

nests for egg laying.. removable for easy cleaning..(I have these)

roosts situated so you can shovel pooh out without bumping your head.. removable roosts are OK..(I have these)

brooder cages with heat lamps installed..(I have these)

everthing suspended off the wall or from the ceiling, leaving no permanent obstructions on the floor.. makes for easier cleaning and more running space on the floor for the flock.. (I have these)

hanging water and feeders.. (working on these)

a partition between the flock and "foyer" where you can enter a clean floor and have storage inside the coop for feed and supplies.. (I do NOT have these,,) but you can bet coop #4 WILL

and lastly, in my ultimate coop.. an overhead door where I can drive my tractor with loader bucket in to scrape the pooh off the floor ... coop #4 or #5 will have this..

I searched for the original post about your delema.. didn't find it.. I assume you raised some chicks for/with someone and it went bad? or something like that ??

I have a couple of Ukokei roosters and 2 hens.. I hatched some eggs for a Hmong lady and these were late hatches.. she didn't want to come pick them up,so I got to keep them.. the roosters are very pretty, the hens are black.. and they are all just as mild as the rest of my chickens.. In fact, the one rooster is the tamest chicken I have.. I can pick him up off the ground..

The original eggs for these chickens were carried to the USA from Vietnam by this woman's grandfather and hatched when he got here.. there were 8 original chicks..

I have a photo of the roo ., but I don't know how to post it here..

Hey if anyone near Manitowoc is placing a chicken order and would be willing to add some extras for me please ket me know. I really really don't want to order 25 chicks because then I end up keeping way more then I need. I would be willing to paypal the money for the chicks in advance if needed. I am hoping to add at least 1 Speckled Sussex hen, a few BLRWs, some more BCMs, and some more blue egg layers. So if anyone is willing to help me out let me know! Thanks!

I don't know how many you have of the young ones.. the deal was half the chicks.. keep half the chicks, make sure you get at least 2 roosters .. and as many pullets as you can..

the deal was for "chicks" as I read it.. he should have picked them up when they were chicks.. Now he owes you for raising them.. remember , he is not as stupid as he would want you to think.. stick to your guns..

I would have mine all picked out and removed to a secluded spot before I had him come to pick his up.. tell him you sold yours already..

but that is me..
