Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

It will be a while before we garden up here, but I have seen the straw bale method. One of the neighbors down the road did it that last couple years, had great looking tomatoes. I plan to put one in this year after my break last year. May switch to some long raised beds that will work a bit better for the square foot method I am using. Have a chunk of the Monk Garden to play in two as I have been assigned a section of the new kitchen garden this summer. It is around 10,000 sq feet but that is broken up by very wide paths and the actual garden spaces are much more manageable. Some raised beds, some flat areas that may end up as examples of green manure fallow years in rotation gardening. Guess it is time to get out the graph paper.

Last night At the Antigo high school prom there was a shooting?!?! Two kids injured and the shooter shot dead by police. I always hear about stuff like this from other places...but never my own town. What the hell is wrong with people today? It sure makes you second guess even going to the Store or leaving the house for that matter.

Dang, that's all about how the children are being raised today. It has nothing to do with the gun being at fault. Normal folks would not even consider such actions. Give them a phone and let them do whatever they please, is pretty much the norm nowadays...in my opinion. We had guns in our cars at school for hunting afterwards...no one ever considered using them...ever! It was never a problem. The parents are so concerned about making money, that they allow the children more freedom than they should have to make choices without any discipline ... again, in my opinion. But everyone will blame the gun. Parents need to parent.

I heard Hillery on the radio,, she said there are too many guns out there,, I will admit, there a LOT of guns out there, but what percentage of those guns are used wrong ?
There are a lot of cars out there killing people, too. should we ban cars ?

IMHO too..

wet , wet , wet here..

Cindy, go on Utube and look up planting in straw bales.
they explain how to prepare the bales before planting in them,

the guy who wrote a book about it, suggested using a chainsaw to split the bales in half, thus getting twice the planting area from one bale.

hay has too many weed seeds..

I am going to use the whole bale. I want the height to make caring for the plants easier. I think a short chair could be used so a person could sit and do his work..

I built a planter on legs a few years ago. It was a disaster.
the soil dried out so fast and became too hard for the carrots and beets to grow. and a 4ft x 3 ft container is heavy when filled with dirt, and then add the weight of the water when you soak it almost daily.. I would recommend using something like potting soil in that kind of situation. of course if you are buying potting soil, it would be very expensive to fill a planter.

have a place not far from us that sells compost by the cubic yard. that is about a small load on a pickup truck .
I am going to check in on them.

3 eggs in one nest today..

I turned the chickens loose at about 1 PM. it is raining like heII but they went out anyway..

On the shooting, lack of parenting is a problem but IMO the "everyone is a victim" thing is the bigger issue.

Once people think they are a victim they can "justify" all sort of things in their mind......

On guns, the way I explain it to my kids is they are a potentially dangerous tool, sort of like my woodworking equipment. In my experience the social vilification of guns creates a more dangerous situation, the most irresponsible person with a gun I have ever known was a police officer's son. Guy would not teach his kids about safe handling of guns, tried to hid them etc. when his son was a teenager and found them he would take them out into the woods and shoot them but never had responsible adult guidance. Saw him have several accidents with guns including one that caused injury to someone else.

There are a lot of dangerous things in all our homes, TEACH kids respect for them and proper use at the right time and everyone is safer.

I agree 100%. Same with bullying crap. Kids are raised so weak nowadays in my opinion and can't handle anything. When a kid gave me a hard time it would sometimes resolve itself or end on a bloody lip or broken nose but never death

I totally agree with teaching kids about guns. The fact is no matter what the dangerous object is there will always be people who want to use it to cause harm and there will always be accidents. The problem is when people who are unstable, or feel justified in some way use them to purposefully cause harm.

I just found out in my home town a 7 year old got hit by a vehicle when they ran out into the road. The 19 year old who hit them is facing a ton of stuff BC they found drugs and alcohol in his car. I don't know if he was under the influence but it's still tragic that guys life is probably ruined BC of an accident on a busy road with a hill that could have happened to anyone and his own stupidity.

Sorry for the rant but I agree guns are a tool a dangerous one and saying that they're the problem is not the solution.

My brothers went through Hunter's safety and we were all taught about guns how to use them how to handle them and what things they can cause. When my oldest brother was younger he had a friend that wasn't taught that and he found his dad's pistol and while playing with it with his brother he killed him. Because he wasn't taught and his dad kept it loaded. They couldn't have been more than 8-10.

Sending prayers for all the families and the town.

good evening,

just finished supper and birthday cake a little while ago.

GS's girlfriend's birthday.

had LaSagna and chocolate cake ..

the goose laid an egg in the chicken coop, I hope she keeps it up.

I am back, my potato seed guy just called, they are short of seed this year, but I am still getting my regular 50 pounds of seed. He gave me a couple of tips for growing tomatoes, and I told him a few things that Unka Dan taught me about peppers. .

wanted to get ducks and geese last year but I worried about them wanting to migrate and leaving me. How do you keep a goose around??

Cory, domesticated geese do not migrate. in fact, you will have trouble keeping them away from the house.
most of them are too fat to fly very far..
they hardly take notice of the wild flocks that fly over..
they are perfect freeloaders. as long as you feed them they will never leave..in the summer you hardly have to feed them, they really graze on the lawn a lot ..
