Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

My MIL loves cukes with tomatoes and onions all cut up then add salt, pepper and sugar. Leave it over night and it creates it's own juice. We also do the creamy ones with some salt, pepper, miracle whip, sugar and onions.

Late morning to everyone.....don't you at least have jowl bacon made bbp?  I would always have that made when I bought a hog...it is really nice bacon.

Did some more weeding today like most days. The winter squash is really looking good so far. I'm hoping for cukes soon....I just love the fresh cukes plain or made with onions and vinegar and sugar for a great refreshing treat when ice cold and crispy.

Taking a break for now....hoping for more ambition than I have right now.

Jowl bacon?! When we slaughter and butcher pigs we usually cut off the head/cheek meat for grind. I may have to look into this interesting cut of bacon!

good evening,

I got the mower all set up and ready to go..
since it was not raining, yet, I took it for a test run,, 2 1/2 hours later, the test run was over and I had 90% of the lawn mowed.
I did not do the nut grove..
and I did not do the south and west sides of the house lawn.

A lady from Maple Wisc is going to get our female puppy
she got one from us last year. and now her oldest dog just died 2 weeks ago. so the timing was perfect .

.the people did not show up to buy my old hens, so I turned them loose at about 7 PM. Now if those people call, "the chickens are gone" .
I do not take getting stood up lightly.

Jowl bacon ? I think that maybe somebody came up with that just so they you would take the head, maybe ??

I think Cindy was the pig's head addict ..

You know, they make kids movies out of these types of situations.

Morning to all...nice and refreshing out there today!

We always buy our pigs from Kropf's and they always offer the jowl bacon as part of the smoked parts....it is labeled jowl bacon and is wider pieces than the normal bacon...distinctly different, but you be surprised how many packages of it most people aren't utilizing from their hog. We always have it done. We also have the neck bones smoked for soup as well as the hocks.

Hi all. Wondering if anyone has the info needed to send a bird in for a necropsy and the cost? We were given some birds which we were skeptical of but I now believe they may be ill(thankfully they've been quarantined) but I still worry about the possibility of them passing anything to our flock. Any and all advice on the matter would be greatly appreciated. We would like to get one necropsied to see if A) we need to worry about our flock and cull any that show signs and B) if it would be safe to hatch the eggs of the sick birds.

If it is something that could be passed through the eggs we won't risk it. Our flock is our main priority but these birds are stunning and tame, including the rooster and I hate to cull them all without good reason.

As this is our first experience with I'll birds we're kind of at a loss. I don't mind culling to protect my flock but I really would like to be able to hatch the eggs of the I'll ones assuming they're not carrying the illness.

Infected are 7 blue laced red wyandottes, 6 hens and a roo.

We picked then up and the roo had only a mild noise when breathing. After seeing the way the guy grabbed them we figured it was probably because the roo had aspirated from being grabbed wrong.

No eye or nose discharge; combs are bright and healthy looking. The hens continue to lay well. They seem to be eating and drinking normally. They now all occasionally shaketheir heads and make a little noise when breathing at night but otherwise they seem almost completely normal. Is it worth it trying to save them? Should we just cull them all and throw the eggs?

What are the chances that our free ranging flock could have been infected by the quarantined birds? How long until we know?
You better believe I've learned my lesson and I very very much hope this doesn't infect our whole flock as they have never been ill except the occasional cocci in chicks and one impacted crop before this.

Just picked 2 gallons of raspberries. Not sure why but the chickens haven't touched them much this year. Last year I didn't get a single **** berry cuz the fluff butts pigged out on them. There's still a lot to be picked and even more to ripen. Gonna have to have my ma out in a couple weeks to spend a day making jam again. We do seedless jam and boy is it more work but the end result is so much better IMO. Hoping the blackberries kick arse this year like the raspberries. Off work tomorrow so I'm sure I'll pick atleast a few more gallons. These cooler temps are sure welcome on this end. As Jim said you could chew the air the last week or so

good afternoon, Annie didn't pick any barries today,, it was my fault,, I needed her in the garden.. I did get the whole garden rototilled except for a half row of the beans.. and they really didn't need.tilling. I will not be able to go through the corn again.
I could hardly see the tiller in front of me ..

I got rained out..

now I don't care how much it rains, within reason..

out of 30 cuke seeds planted, we got only 7 plants.
and out of 32 squash seeds, we got only about 5 plants.
not very good odds for what they charge for that tiny package.

I think I am going to start those seeds early next spring..
DD Barby gave me a couple of plants that I transplanted out of their pots.. those are doing just great..

Tacos are ready,

Got a bird that is acting odd. Earlier we let them out to dig around in the grass and the barred rock was slow to leave the run. When she finally came out, she had one eye closed and kept it that way as she walked around a bit. She did open it a time or two, but then shut it again and then wandered back into the run. Just now I went out to give them scraps and she walked away to stand under the coop. She stood there for a good 5 minutes not moving at all really, just breathing. It looked like she fell asleep standing up... then one of the buffs bumped into her. She opened her eyes, shifted her weight a bit and then sat down on the ground, curled her head around and went to sleep right there. Wondering if we will be down a hen by morning.
