Our nice big soaker fizzled out into a miserable drizzle. Just enough to drive the sticky meter sky high but not enough to let me avoid watering the gardens tomorrow.
afternoon,
tractor tire fixit guy was here.
couldn't finish the job. will be back tomorrow with a new tube and rim. I half expected the rim would be rusted through. and it was..
brand new rim: $129.oo.. not as bad as I thought it would be..
really wet and humid here, and really warm, too. if the sun was shining, it would be well into the mid 80's..
Hi all...
Hopefully I can join this thread? I'm in Waubeka. New chicken owner. Just got day old chicks on 4/5 so they are 15 weeks old. I wanted 6 but got 9 just in case I lost some but I didn't and all 9 are healthy.
I've got a Formex temporary coop that they've been living in for a couple of months because I HAD to get them out of the house and the guy that I ordered a coop from in Middleton, kept putting the date out further and further. So now I've got a new person who is going to build me a coop in the next 2 weeks. My question is: since the pullets are so close to laying age, is putting them into a new coop going to delay them laying? Or if they start laying in their Formex coop, and then the new coop comes and I move them in there, is that going to disrupt them laying?
I went to Waterloo to pick them up in April...2 Barred Rocks, 2 Buff Orpingtons, 2 white leghorns, 1 RIR, 1 Silver Wyondotte, and 1 ISA Red.
I also have 3 Chinese Shar-Pei .. 2 males, 1 female and the female is so prey driven she almost killed one of the chickens last week. *sigh*
can't say for sure that the chickens will stop laying, but just put them into the new coop and see. they will commence laying very soon , IF they even quit.
I have had chickens lay in the pet carrier on my way home from buying them and never quit.
chickens are not so touchy.
Welcome kokosmo, so happy you hopped on. I agree with Jim, you never know what could happen, but I had a hen lay in the cardboard box I was bringing her home in. I don't think lay delay is as big a concern as your pup, enjoy the eggs when they come.
Jim, rusted rim means new fire pit. That's what we did with ours.
Daethen, I read that as you went to Walmart and picked a bag...
Guess I need more coffee
good morning,
rusty rim = fire pit.
rusty rim = just another container for DD Barby
to fill with dirt and plant
something in.
I think Barby will win this one.
Kokomo, these are Maremma LGD puppies.
LGD stands for Livestock Guardian Dogs.
you might have known that, but some people don't..
they work just great for watching over livestock and poultry.
there was a news story a while ago where they got one or two to guard a herd of penguins.
the foxes were decimating them. the dogs put a quick stop to that..
I am overwhelmed with projects.
the lawn is a hay field.
concrete to pour, coop still needs cleaning,
grapes to transplant and build a trellis for.
4 windows to replace.
I will have help on some of this, if people would just show up as promised..
today is visit the VA for blood draw.
I missed my appt yesterday because of waiting for the tire repair truck to come.
he showed up at 3 PM. the rain was the reason for the delay. understandable..
Good morning everyone!
Welcome Kokosmom2 Grab a perch, all are welcome in this coop! Sorry about the pup with prey drive, not good.
Jim, I hear ya with the unfinished project overload! DH has managed to mostly keep ahead of the "hay field" in between the rains but the rest? We have half finished projects everywhere. Hopefully today we get a couple around the coop and new growout pen completed. I've pretty much admitted defeat on the weed war in the herb garden. Never, ever done that before. Oh well, there's always next year, right?
Took down the fence around the Kale and letting the chooks have at it. What do they do? They rototill the fountain in the raised bed and ignore the kale!
Oh well, any kale I toss into the grow out pen to the littles gets gobbled up.
last year I planted grass seed in a couple of places. it came up like fine hair. this year the same areas are like carpet . thick and tangled if I don't cut it soon enough.
all in all, I figure I am mowing about an acre.
I quit mowing behind the garage or it would be another hour's worth..
how can one person be so dumb ? I must be twins..
I am done weeding the garden. the plants are big enough to fight for themselves.
I kept the weeds at bay early on. that really helped..
next year the garden is going to be small by about 1/3 . I am not going to work up most of the southern end. it is wet and shady and things don't grow well there anyway.
I think I will just plant it with buckwheat and let the chickens harvest it.
