Contacted the neighbors who own the dog today. Nice people, upset the dog escaped and did this. We walked their property looking for birds, noticed their property backs up to a giant horse pasture so I decided to check there. Looks like a hawk got Gretchen. I found a carcass with only the innards eaten from it. No sign of the other bird...... So we are ending the search. Coyotes were in the area the other night so I highly doubt the bird survived......
The neighbors are very upset the dog did this, they are having training issues with her. She is a year and a half old yellow lab-looking mutt. So I suggested they contact our fellow cheesehead the lovely redhead Cuties who is now running her own business dog training. I hope they contact Cuties: the dog does not even know the command ‘come’.....
I decided not to be a jerk about this since we are all neighbors that are close together..... I am going to give them the opportunity to correct the dog, so instead of paying me for the birds and damage I would prefer they spend that money on Cuties. If they don’t get a handle on the dog then we will have issues. I have documented all the damage, not sure if I can just file a police report without the police taking action.
So a good/bad Thanksgiving.

Yep, you are the victim here, so you can report the incident so it is recorded and not press any charges.
Simply tell them (police) that if it happens again, then the neighbors will be held liable.

Police report filed. Neighbor has not called Cuties yet either......

Good for you completing the report for future reference, if the problem arises again...then you have solid ground to stand on and the neighbor doesn't even have a leg to stand on next time...if there is a next time.....your arse is covered!

The power went out at our house yesterday at 9 am. We got power back at about 5 pm - 15 minutes after DH broke out the generator, ran the extension cord and got the pellet stove plugged in and running.

That sounds about the way things always seem to go....
Quite a few downed branches in the yard....I'll work on those in the morning.
I see the deer were looking for acorns under one of my big oaks....lucky deer that made it through the gun hunt.

been crazy busy here. total of about a foot of snow with the two major snow falls.
I blew a hydraulic hose on the loader bucket.
the snow all around is a pretty reddish color.
I fixed the hose on Monday, then plowed on Tuesday.
BL4. If you can catch the dog, you could give it some lessons in leaving your chickens alone. The neighbors wouldn't even have to know. Put it on a leash and spend some time getting it used to being close to the chickens..Then when it visits, there would not be a problem..
In all the years we lived here, we had dog problems only twice.. We worked it out with the dog owners and remained friends..
I am sorry you went to the police. That is going to be a wedge between you and the neighbors long after that dog dies of old age

I filed a report. That was it. I did not have the police speak with them, or request any payment. I wanted to establish a record as we all know the dog will be back and will try this again. This was not the first time the dog had been at our house, this was the first time nobody was here (and awake) to stop her.
I am not the only neighbor with issues with this particular dog. She got out one day and corralled another neighbor while they were walking their dogs; did the whole circling around and being very quiet about it. Threatening type of behavior. This lady was terrified.
We would need to corral the dog somehow to catch it to teach it anything. As I said, the dog knows nothing for commands so when it runs around the neighborhood it is running wild and uncontrollable.
The two birds I lost are worth $75 to replace, and the damage to my fencing system was extensive (dog chewed a hole big enough for it to get through). As you are aware, we can shoot the dog the next time it drops by harassing my animals. I do not want that to happen.
I feel I was more than accommodating.
Part of owning a dog is being a responsible dog owner. That involves training the dog. I want them to invest the time and $ into the dog so it is welcome in the neighborhood. Of course I cannot force this. Pressure from neighbors will hopefully encourage them to work with the dog or get rid of her.
If she wipes out my flock I will be out $400 in birds...... I think that is reason enough to file a report.
