Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

lets see if I can talk you through building the feeder.
cut a 2x6 block so it is square. 5 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches.
center it on the bottom of the 5 gal pail.
put washers on screws and screw through bottom of
bucket into the block of wood. one screw at each corner
and a couple towards the center of the block..
then drill some holes around the block of wood

through bottom of pail. about six 1 1/4" holes.
now drill about six similar holes equally spaced

around the side of the pail about 3 inches from the
bottom edge of the pail.
turn pail upside down and place the feeder pan

centered on the block of wood. use screws with washers
into the block of wood spaced like you did from inside
the pail.
you are done. put some feed in it and see how
you like it..
Sounds like what I have now, the little giant, similar anyway.
Maybe if I hung the feeder like I am suppose to be less mess. But I kinda doubt it.
The plastic ports will be here Saturday, warm Sunday give it a try.

TOR, will your roosters be able to fit their
heads into those ports ?
I have a hunch you might have to set the
pail in a pan to catch what will be pulled out.
I looked up the little giant feeders. they are similar
to what I have. cost a lot more, though..
this should be the last really cold day for a while.
I read on another site that somebody complained that
he had to break a hole in the ice so the animals could drink.
Hell, that's not cold,, it is cold when the water is
frozen solid ..lol

I dont know if heads will fit, I have 3 brahma roosters, (1 extra by mistake). 2 of them are large birds specially the 1 is good size.
I read quite a bit reviews and seems there may be a problem with roosters and large combs and also read a lady had her hens or hens get their head stuck in the port and died. hummm... seems like operator error..maybe
I will do 1 pale and have it raised so chickens have no problem getting heads in, maybe fasten it down. see what happens
Will still use the little giant for now.

My water is frozen solid i cant even break it.
Every morning mine is also
You live in Wisconsin, why don't you have a water heater?

Makes life much easier
I would, but keep chickens in front of my old barn ( about 120 years old). I am afraid of fires, specially with the chickens.
Maybe 1 day I will make so I can have a heated waterer safely.
My barn is insured, but not nearly what it should be. Insurance wants so much money.
Cold days like today I go out couple times in the day to collect eggs so not big deal just take some more water and break the ice.

Hope everyone stays warm! I got 2 eggs today. And filled the feeder again, i have to go get more feed now.

How many hens do you have? Anyway I got 9 eggs yesterday, but then I have 14 hens.

I do have a heated wateree they barely drink out of it. I have 5 hens and got 0 eggs. Im switching feeds to all flock, because for some reason i cant get layer pellets anymore.

I never heated the coop, per se.. I did have an electric
heater with a fan that I directed toward the waterer
it kept the water from freezing except in minus 20F.
the coop hovered around freezing temps.
I never use heat bulbs any more. they are not economical .
and they are dangerous. I have seen them throw sparks
when they burn out.
