Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Duck update: two babies out of shell, last one is still hatching but is hanging in there..... I wet down the membrane and stuffed it back under mom when I came home, so hopefully by late tonight it will have hatched. Mr. Freeze from this AM is doing just fine now; a little R&R under mom and some additional heat seemed to do the trick!

I'll keep y'all posted......

Evening All.... Yep good advice celtic. Chickens hate change and the newbie is prolly stressed some, as well as the homy's that have to share their coop with a stranger. Time will help. The Blue-kote works wonders and is simple to apply. If you were a neighbor you could borrow my can

How was vacation anyway Dooner?

Forgot to mention Jim. My Troy-Bilt is a Junior. Works great for between the rows, or smaller gardens, however it's not big enough to do hilling. I need a Horse like you have. I tilled the squash garden again....lookin good.

Hope you are happy with new waterers TO. I really love mine, and they clean up so nice and easy.

Meeting at Camp tonight. Just got home. Alot of work done tonight. The new play station is now set up....loads of wood moved to the wood shed, and big piles from 3 people working the saw rig. Sure wish I had one of those, but I'd have to get my ford running for that to happen.

Picked some radishes and green onions....tasty.

good evening,, whew !! Mom was is a rare mood tonight.. she wanted to get out of here right now.. something bad was happening and she didn't want any part of it.. I told her we couldn't leae right now because some people were on their way to pick up some guineas.. She said, to he11 with them, let's go..
Ma !!!!? LOL

wouldn't eat supper or take off her shoes when I put her into bed.. Now I know where my siblings get their bull-headedness.
I must have been adopted..

The guy who picked up the guinea keets, told me not to dig any potatoes by hand.. He will bring his tractor and PTO potato digger over.. Yeee Haawww !! break MY heart..

Brent, I have a saw rig for my Farmal A.. If you have a trailer, come and borrow it, tractor and all.. You wouldn't be the first..

I'll bet your tiller could hill potatoes.. It really doesn't take much power.. Is there a place to hook up a trencher on yours?
with narrow rows, that is about all you would need..

bring your tiller here and we can get the steel and make you one.. there is a steel yard just a mile from my house..
can you weld? I like to drag the trencher along just to dig up the weeds that the tines sometimes miss down the center..

Houston,,, we have a peachick !! (#2) this one is upright and bright eyed.. a dozen more eggs to go..

Annie threw away all the eggs from under the goose and gave her 5 duck eggs that are due any day now.. she has been setting way over 6 weeks.. (not Annie)..

I used that blue kote spray on some heifers that had pink eye.. It was in an aerosol can.. they didn't like that very much.. You were supposed to spray it just AROUND the eye.. ever try to hold a 700 pound cow still and quiet ?? PS,, it cured them.. and they didn't go blind from the spray..

I used it for ring worm once also.. then I found out that fuel oil works for ring worm also.. I would guess that any oil would work.. It just suffocates the fungus or whatever it is..

time to take today's hatchlings out of the hatcher..

laterz.......jiminwisc..........

Baby #3 is still working on this hatching thing, but he is under mom and his head is outof the shell so I can go to sleep and not worry..... I think he will be just fine by tomorrow morning. Hoping mom does not give him the boot like Frozone!

Looking forward to a few days of fun with family.

All this talk of gardens and chickens and horses......... someday I WILL have these things....... right now I love my Ducks!

Cind, so glad it is just an ear infection with Duke & nothing worse. I sure hope he is feeling better real soon. And with all the hamburger & cheese he'll be eating, I'm sure he'll put a little weight back on. I'm glad to hear your wrist is feeling a little better. Thanx for the well wishes for Dottie. And I love the baby pics! They are just adorable. Never get tired of seeing chick pics.

Wow, do you have a lot of birds!

Oh, TO, congrats on the blues. Beautiful daughter (looks like mom) & horses you have. Good luck with the rest of the fair.
I found our first pepper out in the garden yesterday too, DrH, attached to the plant that was nipped off an inch from the ground!

H&R, I can't really say for certain, but from what I have observed, the beetles would fly from some of my other trees & head straight for the trap. The lure is a pheremone that they smell, so I can't see it attracting beetles from too far away. And it by no means gets them all, but one year we had those things so bad, we had to empty the trap at the end of the day the first day we put it up. Yuck! Luckily, that has not reoccurred. They do tell you not to hang the trap in a tree or the beetles will swarm the tree, but to hang it near the tree(s) with the beetle problem. I think they work pretty darn good, but are not nearly as fast or effective as spraying is. Now that you have knocked down the population, a trap would clear out the stragglers easily. Good luck.

BL4, so sorry to hear of the duckie losses, but very happy that some are doing well. Great job & good luck with the rest! Love the pic!

Awww, Polla, I sure hope you find your roo intact. He's a good looking guy.

Carol, sorry to hear about your losses. I hope Zeus likes his new home.

FT, I am a firm believer that a person can never learn too much, but all I learned from that post is one of the reasons why I do not own ducks. Way more info than I needed to know there!

Now I know how you all felt when I mentioned head cheese.
Wait a minute...... Did I just read you correctly that you love roosters? That might be why you've got so many, eh?????

Goth, I absolutely love cats and you are doing a wonderful job, but if I get any more, or give any more to family members, I'll be sleeping with my chickens.
Jim wrote "next you will have to get more, to even up the sides". Good idea. Who's the chicken enabler/math expert now, Mr. Hatch-a-long?

Jim, I see where you get it from........

Thank you, Bigz, Jim & Hurley. I have no first-hand experience on using the Blue-kote, but I do like to read alot, esp. about first aid & preventative measures.

Good Morning Everybody! I'm declaring today a no sweating day! We'll see. Not even gonna try to address everyone. Ate the weeds for 3 hours then it took over 2 hours to mow again WITH sharp blades. Normally an 1 1/2 hour job. Lots minor stuff planned for today. Need to get some straw for bedding soon and get the coop cleaned out. But not today Ray! Think I'm gonna cut Fric and Frac loose today to see how they do with the big kids. I want to be out there with them though in case of a major beat down. Better get to not sweatin!

BL4 - what kind of ducks are those??

Man it has been a while since I have been on here - way too much reading to catch up on.. I think it was way back about 50 pages... LOL!

Anyone know where I can get peafowl (Indian blue or white) chicks or maybe some hatching eggs? I have someone who has a incubator set up in their garage right now...???

good Noon, we have 5 peachicks now.. a couple of turkeys... and a few more guineas to add to the 15 that hatched yesterday..

I am going to the swap in Elcho tomorrow ,

I want to water,, till/weed and mulch the tomatoes today..
No sweatless day for me, Dr H...

I washed all the waterers this morning..

made pancakes and sausage for breakfast..

Ken now wants to have a peacock along with hls geese and turkey.. Annie and I are not too keen on that .. but Annie told Ken that if he can talk Brian out of one and he pays for it, then she will let him do it.. He really looked kind of shocked and sh!t faced when she told him he had to pay for it.. LOL

with our luck, Brian will probably GIVE Ken one..

Went to the feed store yesterday and picked up 800 lbs of layer, 200 lbs of chick starter and 100 lbs of layer for the neighbor. As long as I drove 40 miles I thought I may as well stop at Goodwill. What a find I got !!

I got 4 Storey series books (not story story, but the publisher Storey)

Storeys Guide to Raising Ducks
Storeys Vegetable Garden Bible
Sowing and Storiing Seeds
Homestead Wisdom & Know How

All Brand New Book. $3.99 each. The Duck book isn't the newest edition that just came out but the one before that, that is still on the market !!!

Going to Rhinelander today and going to check out their book section. They get tons of Brand New books, guess they get them as the newest editions come out !!! Have to deliver eggs in Rhinelander. Funny how I get the egg Money and end up spending more and bring home no money !!!! Oh well, I guess the egg business is supporting (or helping to support my shopping addiction)
lau.gif

Jim, I thought you wanted your tines grinded or sharpened. Chuck is a grinder so???? Our neighbor is a welder by trade so if you want to talk to Chuck tomorrow about it. Bring them with if they are off the tiller.

Anyway, I will PM you about your guineas. A friend stopped over today and talked to Chuck. He might want some guineas. I'll see if I can reach him later today.
He is also looking for a Japanese bantam Rooster !!! So I have to look for that.
Is going to be a long day tomorrow. After I go to the swap, come home tend to chickens then Butt dog has an appointment with the vet at 3PM. Going to have her teeth looked at and those body tags she has on her head and body. Oh and a rabies shot while we're at it.

Well, off to deliver eggs and hit Aldis !!! Oh and yes Blue-kote is a good product. There are pros and cons with everything but I have used it on chickens and had wonderful results. At the Fleet Farm it is in the isle with the cow medications and horse vaccinations. Kind of inbetween both sections. (Antigo Fleet Farm)

Later
