Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I have a newbie question....can you put day old chicks in with 2-3 week olds?? Thanks in advance!

hmm....I probably would not. A few three week old chicks can smother a day old chick pretty easy. They like to snuggle when they are so young...
You could put up a safety for the day olds and keep them in the same place. Just have something a bit separate.

.

You could invert this and put the heat closer to the day old's. After a few weeks they should be fine together.

HI All!

CS....I open 2 tabs on the window. The first tab I have at the end of the thread so I can respond. The second tab I open at my last post. Then I can respond as I go! A trick some other people do here too. BTW.... did that guy say what he was asking for the whole works?

kj.... wow..... hope everyone gets over it soon! Teens... muddle through the best you can like the rest of us did

Congrats on all the new chicks!!!

Don't know if Storky broke her brood or if I just caught her at her "off" time. She sure was broody the last few days! It would be just my luck.... I want to give her eggs for the Easter hatch .... and she gives up!

Well, have to go pack eggs for sale then off to bed!
Oh, George, one of my "good" roosters was limping tonight... no blood, nothing seems broke, I hope he just pulled or bruised something.
Night All!

Cind- the guy said $3500 for everything he's got. No option to separate unfortunately (at this time). I asked about the building/property as well. He said it's $8k per acre. If I weren't attempting to buy a house, I would hop on it, but it's a great deal for the location!!!!
Maybe we as a group, if anyone else is interested, could take a look and together get what we want and collectively offer close to what he is asking.

How many acres? and 8K is way too much no matter where it is.

Congrats on the Chicks, soo cute! Can't wait for mine to arrive... a few more weeks......

BigFam ~ sorry about your little one

it is so hard when they don't feel good... hard on everyone! Hope he feels better soon and you get to get some sleep!

Thanks all for listening and commenting on the teenage wooes. ... This is my first round of them. only 3 more to go!! IKES .. well at any rate even though it sucks apparenlty this sucking, is normal. Is that fare? seriously 10 months of being a big fat whale didn't suck enough for me?? LOL

I guess "normal" is good though. We are not alone, that is for sure. onward and upward! we will make it through!

Got 5 eggs today! yippeee!! I think the girls are confused now. When it got warm, they decided to decrease production. Now that it is colder they increase production........go figure!

Everyone have a great day!

Good morning!
Just got a message from Gina, and everything is set for me to pick up eggs in the morning. She is not happy with the fertility, only 75%, but the price is right, and if they don't all hatch I am ok with that.
Been working on Jim's "recipe" for incubating since yesterday. Cannot get the temp right. I HATE that little adjustment knob. I keep turning it too high or too low. Wish I would have left it alone when it read 100.2, but I tried to adjust it just a little. After I had moved it I was told it would have been ok at that temp. Well now it's all messed up, so I keep trying to get it just right. Wish I had a drill. I read that someone drilled a hole it the middle of a milk cap and slid it on top of the knob so they had more control when adjusting. Was that someone on here?

Hope you all have a good day
P.S. $8k an acre sounds awfully high to me. Like double what it should be?

Hello,

I am a Newbie from Sparta, WI. My husband and I decided to start rasing chickens this year. We are starting with 3 Barred Rock, 3 SLW, and 4 Americanas. We will be getting two silkies but they are not ready yet so we are not going to be able to get them at the same time as the others.

I do have a question for the group seeing as everyone is from Wisconsin

How well does the coop have to be insulated so the chicken stay warm in the winter. Everything that I have been able to find so far says that you don't want a lot of insulation because the coops humidity will get to high and then you risk frostbite. I have seen pictures on the site of chickens in the snow but not a lot of info on keeping them warm in the coop. Any help would be great, now that I have found Wisconsinites that are already dealing with the weird WI weather.

glad you found us! pull up a roost and join the flock

Where are you in wisconsin???? I am way up north. I have a VERY insulated coop but control the humidity by vents in the wall up near the roof that I can open and close as needed (like when it gets too cold at night). In the daytime I open the pophole which is near the floor of course, open the vent(s) near the ceiling and voila', no humidity build up. In the summer I have two large windows near the roof as well (one facing south of course for radient winter heating and to give the girls some light on those "lock down" days) that keep the coop from overheating, which, by the way is more of a problem for chickens than cold.

Hope that helps and again, welcome!!

Glad you found your way over here. We have a lot sweet, generous, knowledgeable folks on here to help with your new venture. I know they have been invaluable to me. I am almost a year with chickens

My coop is not insulated at all. We have had no problems with frostbite, except a little bit on the tips of our rooster's very large comb (sorry Cindy!)
In my limited experience the most important thing is ventilation so the moisture from the chickens breath, and poop has a way to escape, but without a draft in the coop.
Our chickens don't seem to mind the cold temps because they can huddle together for warmth, and most will venture out in the snow.
Good luck- at least spring is coming soon, and I cannot wait!
