Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

oh and the hatchery sent me 8 xtra chicks, so that was really nice!!. ,anything special I should do for the ones that don't look as good? I put it in its own little area in the brooder, it was getting picked on...seems to eat and drink on its own.

Not nice just packing peanuts, normally rooster control for the hatchery, they are almost always roosters......
as far as normal depends just how much stress they were under, they are usually cold and very thirsty, if ya get them to drink even if they do not eat today, that will be your best bet and most should be ok by morning, ......is your brooder set up with an even temp? keep it about 99.5 at least on 1 side and hopefully they have enough room to get away if they get too hot..... if they huddle together in a tight ball of fuzz under the lamp, they are cold if they huddle in a ball at the opposite end they are too hot, they will do some chirping that is normal....... they will sleep a
lot, and if they all fall down at once an look dead that's also normal..if Ya hear distressed chirping.....something is wrong try to get them to drink by repeatedly over the course of an hour or so gently dip there beaks in the water put marbles in the water, it seems to attract them to drink... if ones starts drinking good the rest will follow soon after. use an eye dropper to try to get them to drink if ya have too, but don't squirt it in there mouth you could drowned them, just get a drop on the edge of the dropper and put it on the end of there beak.......good luck and hope everyone makes it, new chickies are so stressful when you don't know what to expect....

Use FF on my meaties. Start them out on it from day1. What I Like about FF: 1....reduced smell
( greatly reduced for meat birds ) 2.) Cuts their water consumption at least 1/3, 3.) feed I felt was wasted as chicks...was minor to what I saved later.

Negatives: 1.) more time than dry feeding. 2.) can certainly make more of a mess, 3.) are you the only one feeding? Make sure all are ok with FF. Storage during cold weather?

Terri... I was up honing my psychic link with Jim because the power flickered so the baby monitor turned off upstairs. So the receiver downstairs beeps. I had to get up to deal with that. Then got insomnia. I'm not looking for pity, but I'm on the verge of a very bad spell. Not sleeping doesn't help at all.

JJ... I got you some plugs. I'm not telling anyone WHAT KIND of plugs though. What you do with them is your business and no body else's... ;) (just please don't take any pics!!!)

BTW... Flocksalot and KrazyKat got into my head. (It is a lot harder than you think CC!) In the middle of the night when you have insomnia, it makes perfect sense to pick up 4 turkey eggs. So I guess I may be taking a trip to Poynette to see Flocks turkeys in person. (Yes, I just invited myself over.) so apparently I'm making me a turkey pet or two?

I'm exhausted. Mentally, physically, emotionally. I need to just sit back and read all your posts. Oh and make sure to pick up my eggs from the post office tomorrow (I forgot today )

Miss mallard came back. Not surprisingly she was alone! But she kept calling and looking up in the air like she was expecting her call duck drake to come down. She has no other ducks to be with now. My white call drake hates her. I know a rehabber that has a few drakes left from last year, I guess I'll give the duck to her.

KJ: Do you have any Sav-a-chick? good idea to add to the water for shipped chicks...or even a little sugar water for the first day-it might help. Fun times!

So I am trying fermented feed for the first time (yes with my new chicks) Just started it tonight and crossing my fingers that this is a good idea. I read and read about this and going to give it a try:
http://naturalchickenkeeping.blogspot.com/p/fermented-feed.html  (I believe this website if from "BeeKissed" from BYC) ANy thoughts?

I just started the FF a couple weeks ago with my chicks (7-8 weeks) they eat it really well (they get dry too) and I make kind of a mash for my brand new (>week old) babes with the FF and dry. Everyone does it a little different! :) I started so if I need to give them something (probiotic, garlic or pumpkin seeds for worming) it will be easy to mix in.

Always experimenting. I wonder with Layers, if LAB would be an easier option for you. I have a batch that will be ready for when the chicks leave the brooder. Will use in coop/run/ and their water.

Meet em and you will love them! Just don't come when it's pouring rain.

Come when it's nice and sit down. Soon enough you will have some curious little turkeys trying to get your attention. Course they will stay between you and me because they must protect the mommy.

Got some more hatching tomorrow. Well actually i think i have a few hatching every week at the very least. Can't have enough of those sweet little buggers.

Oh that's so sad. I'm sorry.
