Anyways, the chicks are doing great. When I got done with track, I came home to find 2 more chicks, six hatched in all, and another 4 that have pipped. I had 30 eggs in and I candled and found that 14 of the eggs were fertile, 9 of them I could not see.

Hatched: 1 leghorn, three of my barnyard mixes, and one other one, not sure what breed. I have a maran egg that has pipped and 2 EE's that have pipped, hoping they all make it and a couple extras!!!

Nope, wait until the others have hatched !!! The shells aren't going to hurt anything. A chick can go a couple of days without food and water because it gets that from the egg yolk it will be absorbing which provides all it needs. That is why they can ship day old chicks.

Just watch the pipped ones close to make sure they are making progress. Like someone said, every time you open the incubator it will make it harder for the last ones to hatch out.

Of course this advice is easier said then done but hey, you are new to hatching and better to develop the habit of doing it right, right off the bat !!!

Just don't ask any of us how many of us would have already opened that incubator !!! LOL

So after a trying day at the job, I am going to beat the he!! out of a punching bag tonight...... using mental imagery of who/what I would like to be beating the snot out of will make for a WONDERFUL workout. Beats getting drunk.

I miss my ducks and I HATE living in town. I want horses and I want chickens. I also want to go to the freakin' horse show!

My castle (appropriately named, given the moat around the house, lol) is still dry, but not much else is. The chicken coop on stilts is leaning westward, so project this weekend is to jack it up and put slippers on the legs.

Got peeping coming from the incubator, so better get downstairs to check on the cheepers. Just received 22 bantam Rock eggs (mostly black with a handful of whites) in the mail, courtesy of a photo contest from the Easter Hatch. Will set those tonight with dozen IBs and some Olive Eggers.

My turkey poults are doing well, darn cute, though a little slow. I also have 2 teeny little serama chicks and some random other chicks, makes for a motley crew.

Off to finish chicken chores...think I need hip waders out there...then I will allow myself a few minutes to coo through the hatcher door at the chicklings.

:)

I wish people would stop using the "hay shortage" as an excuse to starve their animals. There is really still an abundance of hay in this area. Actually there is a guy in St. Croix falls with 1500 square bales he's trying to sell. The only problem is he wants $6 a bale! I think it's really sad that people need that to feed their animals and he is trying to gouge them like that. I hope he gets stuck with all of it. A farmer came to my work today and said he has a bunch of round bales he needs to get rid of. Another guy I know just picked up a few hundred bales for $2.75 each from a farmer cleaning out his barn. He offered to sell me some because he has enough hay. The guy across the river from me has a couple hundred bales just sitting there. I buy them for $2.00 a bale when I need to. The only problem is, with his set up is it's hard to get them out of the barn.

We get square bales for free. The neighbor does square bales in our fields and we get all that we need, well a lot more than we need. But the extra is good. We make hay-forts
