My oldest hen (Big Momma) dropped dead yesterday. She was an australorp that the neighbors gave us because she was broody and we wanted to hatch some eggs. She was at least 4 years old then and we kept her around for 3 years she was a great flock cop. She kept the peace. I think she started to fade a couple weeks ago because that is when the throat pecking started on the cochins and now my olive egger. I wunder who will take over now? My oldest is only a year and a half.

sorry..I hate it when the old ones go.. I culled my oldest last fall because she went into molt and kept laying and never got her feathers back..still layed and egg a day till her last day. I knew she would not make it threw the winter with no feathers. she was an awsome chicken. A laying machine.

We have tornado warnings..sheesh

I beleive that's what they said at the pullorum testing class last weekend. no registration , no NPIP

They have different certs for others too just not NPIP.

There is one cert for peeps to show just one bird.

Everything comes with a fee and paperwork to send to the state(big brother)

It seems more about the paper trail than the pullorum as only 6 flocks in the entire nation were tested to have pullorum all of last year. No flocks the 2 years before that.

Jump in here others that went to class.... Delisha? anything to add?
Ok, so I contacted the Dept of Agriculture and they are sending out the application and explained it to me. Technically you aren't supposed to sell anything except eating eggs without NPIP cert and you don't need it for personal use or backyard flock but aren't supposed to sell ANY birds/hatching eggs without it. Once certified you have to test adult birds every year and they will be coming out to do an inspection. It costs $40 and takes about 2 weeks. All my birds came from NPIP flocks anyways. She said they generally issue the Certification before the inspection because their inspectors get back logged. I already had my Wisconsin Livestock ID updated to include poultry so I am good there. You must have that done before applying for NPIP. Now I just need to find a tester in my area. Bueller? Bueller? Every time I click on thier on line list, it crashes my web browser. I had to have her mail my application for the same reason. I seem to have these issues with some of the other state sites as well. I wonder why?

Lisa

Edited to include hatching eggs

I heard the weather radio alert and I think it said there was a statewide TEST so not to worry!

So very sorry that Big Momma has gone to the Big Coop in the sky! It's hard to lose a critter you've had with you for so long.

are you sure? Today is the statewide tornado test run thingy. Was supossed to be at 1:45pm

Big Momma never forgave me for clipping her wings, she was teaching her brood how to escape from the 6 foot fence around the run, and I didn't want to have to shoot the dog for eating more chickens. She was great, we were not that friendly with eachother. She was a gift so my wife told me not to cull or sell her for stew. She got to live out her life flightless but in charge.

Just wondering....

Do you keep track of your egg production? If you do, what it the average % of eggs per day that you get from your flock as a whole?

If you keep track by age, what it the avg % you can expect to get from each age group?

Just asking.

We were typing at the exact same time Delisha. I don't suppose someone really kind could copy the list for Waupaca/Waushara county and post or PM me. Still causing browser to crash.

Sorry about your hen JustJon, that doesn't sound to fun. What is the oldest chicken people here have had???
