Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Ready for more chicken wisdom/advice. Tonight we candle the eggs we set under our Delaware. Here is my plan, please offer opinions and advice since we are a bit wigged out about this

When it gets dark, I thought one of us could lift her and grab out six eggs, leaving her on the other six and with the door to her box closed. Once we candle that batch, (using a flashlight) we would then grab out the other six and replace the candled that look to be developing.

Hope that made sense, someone told me to use a red flash light, is that necessary since the hen will be in her nice dark brooder box during this?

good morning,

have a couple early pips in the sportsman, these are the 1st duck eggs for me, hoping the humidity is right

RB, why candle eggs under a broody? I let mine sort them out,,,,maybe I'm lazy

Jim as long as you keep promising the same chimi you are getting off cheap

today I finally am getting started on asparagus planting,,,,if nothing strange comes up hope to get it done

had a customer that wanted duck eggs for baking, she sent me a dozen of the best cupcakes I have ever eaten,,,,now it's a standing deal, I get cupcakes and she gets her eggs when she needs them,,,,,barter is good!

bigfam I won't make that meeting.... IF I can sneak away it will be to the show that Mike Gilbert is putting on, some breeders I really want to meet there,,,,Ameraucana and Chantecler folks,,,,,,,,,take notes for me please

I took the kids kayaking last night and again this morning. My son decided we needed to take the long trip because he didn't want to paddle back up river (like we normally do). So we went down to the Black Brook boat landing (right my Angiebubs' house). It was alot of fun, but a little chilly. One of the bridges we went under had 51 bird nests on just the one side of it! We also had a pine warbler hit our bedroom window the morning. I went out and grabbed it and it sat on my hand then my shoulder for quite a while. Poor little thing had a deer tick right next to its beak. It tried to pull the tick off, but it broke.

I should post a picture of one of my chicks. The poor thing can't stand up. It just tips right over. It is now 3 days old and is not improving. It can bend it's legs and everything. Maybe one of its legs is dislocated? I have no idea what to do for it.

I am back, actually never left.. I sorted the eggs I have and came up with : 3 Peacock, ,34 barred rock,, 40 guinea,, and 11 turkey.. 88 total..

I started up bator #2 .. as long as I can do it, I am dedicating separate trays for each particular batch.. ie, all the same kinds of eggs with the same hatching date , per tray..

gotta love these sportsmans.. by the time I had the eggs sorted and into their trays,, it is up to temperature already..

now I have to add water to the reservoir .. 37% just not enough..

Now I am thinking ahead to what kind of watering system to do in the green house.. I do not want pipes on the floor, so I am leaning toward an overhead spray nozzle set-up..

I have it all figured out in my head,, except I don't know what kind of nozzle to get,,, nor how do I attach them to rigid PVC ? do they screw in ? Dan ?

going out to throw some dirt around.. maybe will get Nephew Dan to come help..

Dug up all the irises along the back fence, it looks naked out there! I have some sunflowers to plant along that fence and of course the daylilies. I planted the rest of the broccoli, the squashes, the eggplant, ground cherries, some of the marigolds, the melons, and the 4 o'clocks. I am waiting for the watermelon to sprout before I plunk them in the ground. I have potatoes and beans to plant yet, I would like to plant the potatoes in a wire cage so they are upright (get more out of a small space).

Now I am ready for a nap!

The hawk is back. He took one if my young roosters when we were outside. He was eating it on the ground and I walked right up to it before it flew away. What an annoying protected animal. Every fall and spring I have issues with this thing.

here is the foundation filled with dirt.. the wood chips are spread along the outside of the forms.. to the way right, is the golden raspberries..

to the left, is the farmal A hooked to the big trailer..

way down in the field is the neighbor's grandson,,, stuck in the greasy wet spot..
a little while later his brother came with the big tractor, and broke the tow chain, ..IDK what plan of action they are doing next,, bigger chain, I guess..

this is the Farmal A hooked to the big trailer.. this will be my work table when I start framing up the walls of the green house..

all that hay on the back is wet and getting moldy.. some of those bales will be my potato garden..

another angle of the green house and the wood chips..that mound of dirt at the far end is all I have left to move before adding some compost.. then the walls can go up..

Marlene showed up with 32 guinea eggs.. I gave her the repaired nest box..

I also gave her a cluck.. we have plenty of those around here..

Annie gave me 12 more eggs to set.. I might as well add them to today's batches.. 6 more guineas ,, 5 more barrocks and a turkey.. brings the day's total up to 132 eggs..

My friend at work said she got a small incubator at Farm & Fleet for only $45 and it was $30 more for an auto rotate. What do you guys think? I wouldn't be bating many at once. and I think she said this fits 48 eggs or 41 with the rotator. I've heard people talking about going in and out of it. So would I be able to put some in, wait a week, then put in another set of eggs? THen another week and anther set? Or....???

Good aft. Got a lot done today. Still have more garden to plant though.

This is a good plan...you dont have to be so cautious IMHO though. Most broodies will sit and not move. I have to rake out my B's eggs every day cause she is in with other hens that cannot seem to use a different nest box...even though there are 12 that are not being used!
If you have more than one incubator and can use one strictly has a hatcher a staggered hatch works. That's how I do it.
I have done everything wrong with these turkey eggs from my neighbor...I go into the bator every day to take out turkey babies that have hatched. I cannot believe that they are still hatching! Three more today. I am hoping that I have such good luck with my own eggs hatching!
Speaking of...here are the eggs I got ready to take the trip to Brandon tomorrow:

Each carton has a different variety! I am going to have LOTS of chicks...I hope!

(but I am not counting them YET!)
OK--kids are cooking spaghetti...I guess I oughta get off of here!
