Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Hi all
Stacy-sorry to hear about your chickens. I hope you get the answers you are looking for.
Heather-glad to hear things are looking up for you
Chickenscratch-congrats on the house
Jim-nice job. Looks great!
TO- that little girl is a doll :)
Bbp-I have been wondering about PsychoPeep. Where has she gone to?
I hope I didnt forget anyone. Sorry...
Things have been good here. The two young ones have taken to roisting in the window on the outside of the coop. I tried to get them inside but they are having none of it. The ducks wander about all night. Hoping they stay alive. I have never seen any preds around ever but I know I an taking a chance. Anyone have any pure eggs they wanna sell me? Don't really care what breed.
I was also wondering if anyone knows when rouen drakes heads start turning green. My guy has the ring on his neck but otherwise he looks like a hen. He's about ten weeks old. When do ducks start to lat? I have pekins, runners and rouens.
Giat people-I feel like my fainters are underweight. Is there a way to tell? They used to be so fat in the winter but now they dropped a lot.
Good night everyone!

And you probably should!
Jim, just make a big circle from Wausau to DrHs, then here and I know the way to scott's...then we shoot right up to clintonville!  Big drive for you...but think of the company! TOofftobed

LOL! Jim, you and Z better get him quick for this 'project', he is going to start working 10 hour days 6 days a week starting the 29th..... and he LOVES New Glarus beer! Spotted Cow, Totally Naked, Two Women, Fat Squirrel,......... too bad he will be working when I drive up to Clintonville next week to pick strawberries.....

We now have 4 people working in the lab during the day....... and since the weather has not warmed up we are not very busy...... so there is a lot of thumb twiddling going on..... Our intern is working on a few projects of his own; side experiments you could call them. He is such a smart kid and he has all of there neat 'toys' at his disposal; it is fun to watch the wheels turn in his head. He is destined for great things...

Did my kickboxing class tonight; two weeks of vacation have really taken a toll on me....... but I was really happy on Monday when I did 10 regular push-ups! A few months ago I could barely do 2!

My co-workers and myself are doing a mud run this weekend; we are Team Cliff Notes since we are all nerdy people and the name of the event is Edge The Ledge. Tyler from Purely Poultry is doing this race with us! I hope I can get some pics so I can post them up here....

I suppose it is the witching hour and I should think about sleeping......... I will try to get some pics up tomorrow morning.

Oh Boy, busy day here today hey ? Just my two cents worth of wisdom or whatever it is but just a few comments or ideas or whatever:

Stacy, so sorry to hear about your losses...I should go back a reread your first post. I'm confused.... You are loosing some of your older birds as well as all or most of the new chicks or chickens you bought at the swap? How long ago was it that you bought them? It really is hard to pinpoint who may have brought this illness into your flock unless you had a closed flock for years and brought in the new birds and then it appeared. That being said if your flock had been "carriers" it is possible that the stress of adding new birds can "trigger" the infection to surface or spread to the new chicks or chickens..... don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that is what happend or that your chickens were carriers... what I am saying is most flocks eventually will have their own "immunities" to certain diseases, or be carriers etc. That is one reason a lot of chicken keepers will cull their whole flock before then bring in new chicks. This helps prevent the new chicks which are very susseptible to disease from becoming infected. Like I said, I don't remember specifics as stated above but just giving some food for thought.

Have you read some of the posts in the disease/illness section here on BYC? I don't think everyone that has had MG culls? Would it be possible to have some of your remaining birds tested after you wait a while to see if they are carriers? You know depending on who you talk to at the University's about the same disease, some will say cull and others will say it's in every flock and don't cull..... no one seems to agree..... hard call to make.

Now with that being said I know for a fact that there are people out there that know they have sick or infected carrier birds and still sell them at swaps or on CL......... Don't be alarmed anyone.... it is not anyone on Cheeseheads... I just know that the chicken world is about as trusting as the horse world unless you know the people you are dealing with.... that's all I'm going to say about that other then know who you are dealing with.

Bigfam, hope your flock (what's left of it anyway) is doing better !!

Jimbo, I love your buildings.... for sure next trip to Wausau I'm coming over..... I think July 3rd I'll be headed down there, I know July 9th I have two appointments in Wausau but my family will be up here that week so I won't be able to stop then. Why are you selling your peacocks and hens??? Didn't you just build them that huge flight cage ??
Hope Dora starts feeling better..... that prednisone will make her hungry... but wonder what is the cause of her distress !!! Dang vets... there about as good as doctors !!!

We went to Crandon today....Stupid to go to town hungry.... ended up eating at the Log Cabin Cafe........... soup and salad... I even put my dressing in a small little cup and dipped my fork into it.... never mind I had a small amount of potato salad, pea salad, and tuna salad !!! And a small bowl of chilli !!

Could have been worse I guess. I could have gone back for seconds !!!

So instead of seconds I had a piece of STRAWBERRY RHUBARB PIE !!!!

Then drove to Mole Lake for their flea market... person I was looking for wasn't there. She knits scrungies for doing dishes out of that netting material. They are better then anyone elses.... last forever.... so decided to go into the casino... lost a few dollars.... Then walked around, watched the Deal or No Deal game a couple was playing...... grabbed a free diet pepsi then saw a slot machine that looked fun.... Had horses on it ..... sat down and put in $10 that I swore I wasn't going to lose and Ta Da..... I made another $10 and I took it and ran. Plus some one left a ticket in the waste basket by the machine worth $0.10..... So I cashed that in too... Hey.... Ten Cents is Ten Cents.....Yes I will bend down and pick up a penny on the street !!!

So before I hit the hay.... I forgot to finish my story from yesterday..... at Menards in Rhinelander..

Got out of the hot van (cause fan doesn't blow) and parked accross from me was a white SUV with a toy poodle dog locked inside.... Barking and pawing at the window...... The windows were only down about an inch (4 windows) They were rolled up so high that you actually had to go right up to the vehicle to see that they were down a tad. The sun roof was also open but only about 3". Right away I noticed that as people walked by there were comenting on the poor dog.
The guy next to me was getting his kid out of the car seat...and I noticed he was bareing his arm (yes a gun) which was an eye opener to me.... never saw anyone carrying out in the open like that.... reminds me that I need to get my permit...
Anyway, he dialed 911 and reported the poor dog.... That was at 4:50pm...... I waited around and called 5 minutes later..... Waited some more and of course more people were getting real T'd off. Then someone who had gone into the store had come back out and said they had announced it over the PA and the owner came to the front desk, they said we do that all the time and she will be fine.... never went out and checked on the dog at all........ That really ****** me off... so I kept waiting outside.... Finally the cop arrived... It was close to 5:10pm by now.
I told him what I knew and I said I was going to offer to give the dog a good home..... well.... I got told to leave it up to him... he would take care of it........Ok so I go in the store, talked to the girl at the desk, found out it was a couple maybe in their 60's.
Did my shopping and upon checking out I see the cop walking out the door with the store manager.... At this time it was about 5:38pm. As I walked past the front desk the girl said they just paged the owner again (think the cop got tired of waiting) just then a woman matching the discription came up to the desk.... I knew right away it was the owner....... I said are you the ower of the poodle.... she said it's not a poodle.... wouldn't answer me when I asked what kind it was... then before we got outside I started blasting her about it being to hot. she said the windows were open... I said not enough... she said we do it all the time and she's fine !!!! By this time we were outside and I didn't want to be charged with harassement myself I just said......Would you do that to your grandchildren ????
Got in my hot vehicle.... watched as the cop talked to her and she rolled down the windows about 6"...... She must have gotten hot herself because she took off her long sleeve jacket (which only god knows why she was wearing yesterday) and left it on the hot car seat while SHE WENT BACK IN THE STORE !!!! NO ticket or warning from the cop... he left.....
So I thought the right thing to do would be to drive to the McDonalds and buy an ice cream cone..... one for me and ONE FOR THE DOG.... or should I say for the DRIVERS SEAT !!!!!
So two cones it was (mine without the cone) drove back to deliver it and.... wouldn't you know... they were loading a vanity, sink and who knows what else they bought......
So the Seat, I mean Dog never got the cone !

That dog was in that hot car for at least an hour !!!! What the H3LL is wrong with people. I had also told her to leave the dog at home when it's this hot and she had better be careful, she's in the system now, they'll be watching her !!!!!!

Ok, now that I"ve used up probably two pages worth.... that's ok for those who skip my posts... your pages ahead now !!! LOL

Judge, I know what you mean about the goats looking so much thinner after they've lost their winter coats. I was looking at mine yesterday and I think they are a bit on the thin side. I was just about to look up the deworming dosages. If you pull down the bottom eyelid then look at the color. If it is pale or should I say not a healthy pink color they may have worms and need to be dewormed.....
I'm going to use just the regular ivermectin horse dewormer to start with. Might use some Safeguard for the next round.

I need to read up some more about deworming goats... my memory isn't doing well these days...... I seem to remember them saying you could give quite a bit more of the ivermectin safely to them... I want to say a 100lb goat could get dewormer for 400lbs but I'm going to double triple check on that... Just an FYI

Hi All!
