Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Wow!!! Great soggy morning everyone!! I haven't even been out to the coop yet (I know, bad chookie mom's) every time I start outside it pours harder!
STACY - plz let us know your test results. I guess t is one of the most fascinating and sometimes devastating things about flock keeping, it is a never-ending learning experience.
FRENCHIE - I know you deal with neuropathy too. Ever had this? Went to my pcp yesterday in Rhinelander thinking I had a chronic inner ear infection but instead was told it was the nerve that runs from my neck to the left side of my head and that the discomfort would have been a lot worse if I wasn't already taking neurontin. So he upped my meds. Just curious what you think.

OOPS - just stopped raining g so I better make a run for the coop!!!! BBL!!!
Sorry you are dealing with this. I used to take neurontin, 1800mg a day, but now I take Gralise. It is the same medication, gabapentin, but in a time release so I only have to take it once a day instead of three. I hope you get some relief soon

Taking a break from party prep. I'm hosting a retirement party for a friend, so took yesterday and today off. Will have around 25-30 people here tomorrow . . . would have to be the hottest and most humid day of the year so far

Rod got the coop finished (for the most part) last night,we got mama and the chicks moved into their half easily enough. The other 6 big girls started out easy, nabbing them off of their roost after dark. But murphy's law (d*mned ol murphy!!), one got away from us and out the door of the mobile coop

Well she camped out all night, we worried about the preds but there she was this morning perched on the split rail. Eventually she made her way into the mobile coop and sunngled into the nesting box, we shut her in and will go to plan "b" later today.

kistip: It would be fun to work together on a meet and greet, I'll send you a pm in a week or two and see what we can come up with

Amyb: Yup not too far . . . looking forward to making close by connections. So nice your Dad is coming for a visit. I know what you mean about keeping the chicken penned up, ours will be for a couple of months now. They need to get used to their new coop/run and we'll be getting our meaties July 16th so I don't want the layers free ranging down around the meaties pasture. They are PO'd but will get over it.

bf4m: I was thinking the same thing, those ponds do look like cut agates with crystals. It is so nice Deli and Joe are giving you a hand. There are so many good people on the forum.

Rain is slowing down - I best get back to party prep.

speaking of ducks, Amy did you need a WH drake? I have had terrible hatches in 3 attempts but I think I have it figured out, mine are older and the drake is not providing good fertility. I do have 2 drakes in the brooder and another 7 eggs that are looking ok at day 18 or so. All I really want is a few young ducks and at least another drake for next year. Even at 3-5 yrs old these 9 girls give me an average of 5 eggs/day

I do have a drake, he is the only WH survivor from last year's hatch. I have 2 ducklings in the brooder, and I think they are both girls.

I read somewhere that WH fertility is only 75%. Wonder why?

I'd like to candle the eggs under the broody Scovie, but she's under a pallet and the nest is hard to reach even if this big belly weren't in teh way. Any guesses on how long they'll take to hatch? Standard duck 28 days, or Scovie 35 days? All the eggs are Scovie/Welsh Harlequin.

Wow Vick, That sounds very very uncomfortable..... how long have you had it?  Do you have other neuropathies that are chemo related or diabetes related (thus the reason for neurontin) I was put on that years ago and for some reason went off of it. I think it made me to sleepy. ???

Does your oncologist know about your neuropathies? If not I would make sure they know. They might even be able to refer you to a good neurologist. The one I see in the best but he is way down in Racine.

Years ago I used the zostrix cream (it has hot red pepper in it) That stuff stung when you wore long sleeve shirts or put your arms under water.

Wish I could offer more advice sorry.   Might be worth a trip to GB or wausau for a second opinion.

Wow, just go up an hour ago and I'm nodding off while I'm typing... think it's time to go back to bed or a while....

HI FRENCHIE - yep, my oncologist knows. He originally put me on the neurontin years ago. The Neuropathy is caused by the chronic myeloid leukemia as well as a side effect of the chemo drug I have to take to fight the CML. Just a lovely double whammy. Not as bad as it sounds, at least for me. So far it's been a really slow progression. Been some loss of motor function and loss of sensation ( I have both motor and sensory peripheral neuropathy) but mostly just the usual ouchie stuff. Just got a call from my pcp. Just as precaution, because of the chronic pain, my doc decided to do xrays. have arthritis in my neck. Explains a lot. Well at least they didn't find anything in my head. Oh, wait a minute!!! Is that a good thing???. :lau

BL4 - your pics are beautiful!!!

JUDGE - TY. :hugs

Good afternoon--just popping in. Friend Peggy brought be 2 barred rock roos today. She made a deal with her neighbor that the neighbor would take care of her chickens if Peggy rehomed her roos for her. I told Peggy I would take a few more of her barred rock hens seeing as Cuties only had 2 from them hatch...I really like that b&w striped theme! They look cool in the yard. So I have the roos in QT. They have been Sevin-ed and now I need to vaseline up their legs...they are only just over a year but their legs are already bad. Nice looking birds overall though.

So Amy, will these offspring be mules like the ones from Roen/Muskovy matings? I have a couple here...they think they are whole but they never set or mate...THey get nice and big though...I sure wouldnt mind making a few more!

Whoever was asking aobut green heads on males...mine are actually losing their green now. THey will gradually change to looking like the girls and then will go back to green by spring. I think the young ones maybe wont get their green heads until the second molt? I am not sure on that though.

Looks like the sun is coming out...I bet the humidity will shoot through the roof now! The garden really liked the shower.
The neighbor came and helped jump the car to get it out of the neighbor's driveway. He sold the land and the new guy wouldnt sign the closing unless the car was off of it! I sure hope this isnt the start of a bad relationship. The guy is a honey producer--Doug Jenks. Rich says he knows me...no doubt--everyone seems to! LOL! He is a member of Jefferson/Dodge Honey Producers so maybe I talked to him at one point. I hope he wants to put some hives on my property!

DH called and he is on his way home from Nebraska. He said his brother is coming out tonight to bring another truck(oh great!) and wants to go to El Mariachi for dinner. Party of TWELVE! I am going to phone for a reservation...sure hope they take them! Margaritas here I come!!! (and they have the BEST)

Better get something done here I guess. THen we are going to NAP!

Oh yeah...8 quail out at last count. I will take them out of the bator befor we leave tonight...still have to clean up that cage! Better get at it!

I also spoke with Scott Jones at the Barron Lab. I hope this is easily understood. Testing for MG. Use a 20 gauge needle and 3cc syringe and draw 1 CC of blood from the wing vein. Put blood in a red top tube(said you can get from vet) let sit at room temperature overnight and then refrigerate until you can bring in to Barron. Their are a few tests you can do which are all under 4$ per test. If you don't want to do it in this fashion you can have a vet do but will cost more of course. Poultry is the only animal that an owner can bring samples in personally. He prefers samples from 4 birds. You can drop off right in Barron and have Premises Id #.
Thanks
Stacy
