Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Oh and Vicki, I think all this talk of fruit butters is very interesting! Being from WI we just don't have it up here much. And being that I love most sweet things, I love the idea of fruit butters which I've never tried but sound delicious! And you can do that with most fruit?

As to the questions... I just keep being annoying and reposting them, eventually using all caps, until someone answers. I can think of three questions off the top of my head that didn't get answered. But I'm too lazy to repost them numerous times since they aren't urgent right now.

Pears: peel, core, pack in jars, add sugar, add alcohol of your choice, cap and wait.

You can always check the Ball Canning site for ideas. Yes you can make pear butter too.

Vicki, had to look up the history of making butters. Pretty interesting!

Off to work.

Alcoholic pears too?! Mmmmmm booze fruit. But I don't like the taste of alcohol, so I need a fruit infused with alcohol that doesn't taste like it is. Can you make THAT happen?!?!

Hi everyone we have a very exciting weekend planned which is saying a lot for Central WI! My son is playing with the Woodchucks baseball team for a training camp tomorrow, I'm biking 17 miles on a relay triathlon team in point, and the balloon rally and chalk fest is all weekend! All my chicks are growing out great and I have been very lucky to not have any cocci issues! All the birds are out in the barn now and I may be able to park my car in the garage again as soon as the brooder box is moved! Hope everyone has a fun weekend! :)

yep. I've made butters out of plums, apples, pears, peaches (southern of course), pawpaw, grapes (yummy way too use up wild grapes but takes A LOT) and I'm sure others. you can do with small berries too but it takes a lot of them and requires straining as you go to get the seeds or I have resorted to using an emersion blender (sorry granny). All this talk reminds I need to go check on that wild plum patch and my wild blueberries on the back forty. I wonder if my favorite wild blackberry patch down the road came back this year? The several years of draught up here had all but killed it off the last year I checked it.

Oh, and fruit butter is also called that because it is usually (in the south) spread on biscuits, etc. like butter. Butters can also be used (if cooked down nice and thick) in place of oil in much baking. When the kids were little their favorite Sunday breakfast was buckwheat pancakes spread with apple butter, rolled up jelly roll style, and dusted with powdered sugar. I still love my pancakes with just some melted butter and a good dollup of apple butter.

Bad news, I think, my roo has stopped walking. He just lays on the ground with his right leg splayed out in front of him. I have separated him from the other roo and hens and given him his own food and water. Well, what I want to know is what is the injury, hip or leg and what should I give him?

Thanks for everything,
Colton

Colton, when keeping chickens, or any animals, sometimes you have to know when to let go. Chickens have an enormous pain tolerance. If your rooster has been brought so low as to be unable to walk, he is in such severe pain, you have to let him go. Put him down. The best thing is to put him put of his misery,, out of his pain. It is hard, but it is the kindest thing you can do for him at this point. I'm so very sorry. :( :( :(

Colton, sounds like hip to me.. It seems that if it can be popped back in, it usually is weak and can pop out again..

I have tried popping them back in with no success.. I just don't have the technique..

sometimes it is not popped out, either.. just bruised..

give it a couple of days and then see how it is going..

I am not going to tell you to kill it.. that is your decision..

Hi all---Hey Colton, perhaps his hip is out of joint? Before you do as Big said picture how a skeleton of a chicken is (or look at a pic) then hold him at your chest face him out,, grab him by his drumsticks and see if you can manipulate the troubled leg into the position it is supposed to be. Sometimes you can pop it back in (you can hear it) You have to feel up high where the thigh bones go into the pelvis. It is hard to explain but see if you can give it a try. Never know, you might be able to use the lesson in the future on a bird that is not so far gone. If he is still not eating though for 3-4 days now...you probably will have to get the axe. I too am sorry--it is always the favorite.

No Cind--I dont have any of your special "can heal a bullet wound" salve! I wish I did. I think I heard you type that you want to have a goop making party at your place? Count me it! Let's wait until fall though...the blood in her lump was bright red and not like hematoma blood. IF it was a chicken I would go ahead and lance it but seeing as it is the only female button I have...I am hesitant. She is about the size of a wren so wrapping is probably not feasible either...I am at a dead end. I think I will look for that drawing salve. Isnt there one you can make with plantain leaves? I thought I read it somewhere when Commander had that lump on his foot.

Kritip--I have made pear butter and it was very very bland. Perhaps if you added Cinnamon or cardamom it would be better? The crockpot works really well for stuff like that! I like the idea of wild grape butter too...care to share your method VickiW?

There was something else...whoever is having that fun weekend have, well, FUN! LOL!
Jim did you get that tiller fixed?
BL4--will you take Taffy for a x-ray or just see if you can splint it up yourself? When my parakeet broke his wing I put it in place with a band-aide around his body. He couldnt fly any more but it did heal quite well.

Timer is ringing--time to finish dishes!
Later--TerriOusinghertimertokeepontracktoday
