Colton, I remember you posting that you have meal worms. And I think enough to sell a starter amount. Can you tell me about them? How to care, how many, and price. And are you located far from brandon? Can you mail something like that?...

Actually, I don't have meal worms yet, we have the setup, just no worms yet. Sry.. I forgot who it was, but someone on here has them and put a link up. Found it!!

good nice cool morning from a cool guy,

I went to bed very PO'd last night.. I fought with this computer all day, off and on,, It is still not 100% but at least I managed to read the 50 posts I was behind..

CC, BigZ is watching the fires intently , because his oldest daughter is there as a coordinator/mapper ..

I have 62 new and new-ish keets,, and another batch started hatching yesterday,, there are 9 very new ones waiting to be rescued from the hatcher..

just for the record,, the last hatch turned out 2 out of 3 hatched from the stolen eggs from the found nest.. I floated, then tossed 16 eggs yesterday..
the ones hatching are from a different found nest.. I was watching a couple of guineas yesterday.. I think there is a nest in the pine windbreak..
and the hen sitting on the 20 eggs is still sitting like she was glued to the ground.. I have not seen her off the nest for any reason, for a week..
what I like, the puppy makes his rounds of the yard and he passes within 3 feet of her.. I think his scent will deter most preds ..

her nest is just 6 feet from the path to the greenhouse.. she doesn't seem to mind us checking on her.. we stay our distance, though..

hey you mealworm people,, how would those worms work for ice fishing ?

BRRRRRRRRR! 40o when I got up! No wonder I can't keep my critters healthy.

On that front, I had a surprise call from the Chicken Doctor, doc Brown. I had sent him an email with a question about Oil of oregano use and he called me! Wow. What a nice guy! Chatted with me like we were old friends and answered all my questions, even gave me great tips about how to deal with my chooks respiratory issues. Who does that these days???

BTW - girls are doing much better but he gave me a tip on how to make the puny Duramycin work if that's all you can get in a pinch (like up here)

Frenchy - do you know anywhere up here I can get oxytetracycline? Trying not to wait a week to get it thru the mail.

Terri - the babies are doing great and cuties even sent me baby pics

Dan did you REALLY remember all this? If so, you are amazing! It was a pretty good synopsis of all that went on too.

Oh, I got my replacement chicks, CC. 16 of em, two died, 7 of them are polish. Three dif. colors. Very cute.

Today, I got my new compound bow. Very very happy. I can already tell it's a deer killer. Gotta help put food on the table. Well, I guess I have hens and broilers too but that ain't always enough for a family of 10.

Oh, I also got my dad to agree to a duck pen, very small. Only for two ducks, but hey at least it is a start!! Any suggestions on a good starter breed???

I can certainly set you up with muskovies! They will provide eggs and meat very quickly...and you wont have only two for long either! Hey, if you shoot a deer for me, I will GIVE you a nice start for ducks and one for geese too! (what a deal!) I can give you a start for the mealies too!

What I did when I started mine was to order them through a woman on here. Quick shipping and lots to start with. My colony has been going for well over a year now. Just look for the thread "Mealworm Farming" it has all the information from 3 different growers with different styles right in the first couple of pages. Very helpful. I do the one pot method. (well, that's what I call it anyhow!)

Hey H&R...how is that mealie farm doing of your sons? He get babies finally?

I think I should go and do some work now...I have three gardens calling and the ground should be nice for weeding!

JJ--careful shucking all that corn. I did 15 dozen one year and the next time I ate corn I got hives all over my arms! That must have been 20 years ago or so...the corn was a buck a dozen! I dont know what I do wrong with it but whenever I freeze it it just doesnt taste as good as store frozen corn. WHat a copout hey?

Oh yeah, I forgot...when I save that much $$$ on groceries it is not cutting coupons. I shop the ad at the Pig and the screen says how much you saved using their card. Once in a while I will cut the coupons from the paper if I see them (not too often) but I am not brand loyal in the least; so they are mostly no use to me. (I dont really purchase too much processed stuff)

Jim I thought that guinea would have hatched those eggs by now! GLad she picked that spot so you men could keep an eye on her too. Smart birdie.

Vicki--I think Cuties said they hatched on the 3rd of June. At least that is what was written on my paper...

OK--I think I am done now...mealies--great for ice fishing if you can get them to stay on the hook!

Jj..let me think about that. That is a good deal though.mwish our local grocery did something like that. Just a bad week for me with the kids two bday parties next weekend.
Say...cooking experts, when it calls for zucchini in muffins in a receipt, could I use yellow squash also since they are similar?

I'm no cooking expert, but I've substituted acorn squash for pumpkin in recipes with no problem. I don't see why it wouldn't work.

I really don't remember when the guinea started to sit in earnest.. but I know it has not been 4 weeks yet..

we cut the corn off the cob for freezing.. we have a couple of really neat cutters that fir on top of a bowl or kettle that we bought from Jung's.. we can do either whole kernel, or creamed style..

it takes about 8 ears to make 2 cups of cut corn.. I put 2 cups into freezer baggies and stack them as flatly as I can..

we blanch the whole ear in rolling boiling water., then cool the ears quickly in the sink in our very cold well water.. then transfer into the second sink to further cool them before cutting the kernels off..

you have to refresh the cold water after a few batches.. I do about 8 to 10 ears at a time..

here is a tip for blanching.. have the water at a rolling boil,, drop in about 8 to 10 ears and when it comes back to a rolling boil, the ears are blanched enough.. usually takes about 7 minutes..

I also alternate the sinks when I put the corn in.. I change the water in one, and then I use the coldest water for the first cool down.. then I drain the warmest water and refill, then that sink becomes the coldest sink ..

we do not add anything to the corn in the baggies.. just plain corn..

maybe I should get some mealies now, and start training them to stay on the hook ??

I might have to do that this year..I have corn coming out my ears and can't eat it fast enough.
