Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I've been popping back and forth from the lap top trying to catch up on posts in between my pre-vacation tasks today and finally caught up. On posts, certainly not on tasks

IrishR: I totally love your set up and have question about the tractor you have your new "blues babies" in. Since it has wheels, how far off the ground is the base? We've always thought the base needed to be flush to the ground, or wire extended, so have struggled with how to incorporate wheels.

momgille: How does the weekend of October 12th or 19th look for getting together in Paoli. Kristip is pretty busy w/sport activities, but may be able to sneak over for a few minutes and join us. We can see if one of those days will work for TO too. I know there are others in the area that may join in once we set a date.

Amyable: CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Kristip: Fun and how exciting - can't wait to start on bees myself. I'm really looking forward to seeing your set up in the spring.

Well hubby just put the ribs on the grill, so it looks like time to pop some corn and watch the Packers

I might could show up too.

Applesauce making day today!!!! So far I have 6-1 gal freezer bags full, and I have one more batch cooking on the stove. Grilling pork chops tonight so the applesauce will be a welcome addition.

My process method is; quarter apples, add to pot with about 1/2-1 cup water (enough to cover the bottom of the pot about 1/2 an inch), add some whole cloves, a cinnamon stick or two, sugar to taste, pop the lid on and cook until the apples are soft stirring every once in a while to prevent the apples from burning on the bottom. Process in food mill and either can or freeze.

I did not add any sugar to the sauce I made today. I figure we do not need it anyway. We will see if anyone notices.....

Congrats Amy! Healthy boy hooray! This is what i did yesterday and it was pretty cool. getting things ready for the spring! Say I know someone asked about this last week and I dont remember who it was or if they got a response.... I have a pear tree that the branches are so full they are breaking off, but the pears are small and not ripe yet. I have had to pick some to relieve the branches that are not yet broken...what would you do and what can I make with mini pears... fruit leather maybe?
Leather would work and to make it better, cook em down first with white grape juice to sweeten em up. Did it before, yum! BTW - I use the same technique with wild plums for leather and butter. Love the outfits! You look like something out of an apocalypse movie!

Vicki.... do you peel them and core them before cooking them down? Add sugar or just use the grape juice for the sugar? or cook them with skins and no core and strain them?
Actually depends on how thick the skin is whether I peel. I always like to leave the skins on whenever possible but I always core. I just cook down in a big pot with the grape juice. You can taste to be sure when it's thick but the grape juice should make it plenty sweet. I use my immersion blender to take care of any skin chunks which eliminates the need to strain. Feel free to ask any questions. Preserved a lot of foods in my day. Only thing I don't do is pressure canning.

Sorry not a good weekend on the 19th have a wedding up Nort... and we are having all the wood floors sanded and refinished between the 12-19th but 12th is doable.

We too have given bees a thought but getting him to agree to chickens was enough of a project for two years... but next spring who knows

Praying it was a bee sting since there were so many on the watermelon pieces I tossed their way

The tractor was a curbside freebie that we brought home, painted and modified.

The tractor base is an inch or so off the ground and the wire extends down beyond the 2X4s. The chickaroos go up the ramp to the roost at night and I pull the ramp up and secure it so they're all tucked in and safe until morning. I also have the tractor inside my garden enclosure which gives them an extra measure of protection (provided the deer don't crash through the deer fencing again and open up a big ole hole).

Very cool!! Let us know how the project goes along!

For those of you in the Waupaca County area and are interested in raising honeybees....

http://www.travelwisconsin.com/even...osquito-hill-nature-center-honey-sunday-40858

The Honey Sunday event at Mosquito Hill is going to be held next Sunday, the 15th of Sept. It is a hands-on learning experience and they have a wealth of information on raising bees! I love going and would LOVE to raise bees (of course the gated community here will not allow it).

I will most likely go, so if anyone would like to meet up let me know!

Irish that horse situation makes me sick. What ticks me off even more is the lack of response from the idiot sheriff's dept.

sure if they were COWS they would look OK, these are horses you nitwit! You do not have a cow vet evaluate horses.

My thoughts? Go out there at night with a trailer, clip the fencing and whisk them away to a better future.
