Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Good foggy morning! I hope all of you early to work ones be careful! I dont usually have to be anywhere before 10 so I am in luck...except for Friday and Sunday this week...those are the last "leave at 6AM days" Thank God! I will miss the lady a tiny bit but I am hoping I can fill in the $$$ loss with the nanny job. (it should be more fun anyhow!)
Yes Connie I am doing some nanny/sitting type jobs...you and your DH should go out for an overnight. Palmyra is pretty far to go for dinner and a movie!

I hope you guys get to meet up at the Portage show. I went 2 years ago with H&R and their family. It was fun. I dont recall there being any charge for parking or entry either. I was actually pretty surprised how small it was for being an "International" show! I did get to see my first large fowl Modern Game. VERY COOL BIRD! I sure would like to have some someday....

Just got a call from an old CL ad. Someone in Western WI lost all their Ameraucanas to a raccoon and a man called that uses their land for hunting. LOOONG story short, he wants to get some new birds for her to start over and get on her good side so he can keep hunting there. (how's THAT for a chicken story?) He said he knows nothing about chickens...

I told him to give my number to her so we could talk...would be pretty silly to take birds there only to find that the coop hadnt been fixed and strengthened! Terri to the rescue! Maybe I should change the name of my business!

There's my little chippy friend! Right on cue. Funny little guy. Since my stock dog passed away a few years ago they have been steadily increasing in numbers. The other day there were two sitting in the food dish eating with the Marans! Brats. Evedently the feral cat doesnt eat chipmunks.

I keep forgetting to thank you all for the well wishes! They worked and that nasty head cold only lasted until Sunday night! So THANKS EVERYONE! I think I am pretty much back to "normal" now. I was a bit out of breath yet yesterday but seem good (so far) today.

Sounds like it is time to go looking for hickory nuts! I keep hearing them falling off the tree and hitting the porch roof. I dont usually get too many from my old tree...the squirrels take care of them for me! I do like to drive and find them though...an activity left from my childhood I guess!

Yes Cind the produce makes me feel so good! Nice to be able to give it away too...I foraged for my lunch yesterday...felt just like one of those Paleo eaters! Just as I was heading into the house a perfectly ripe pear fell practically at my feet for desert! I had to fight off the chickens before they pecked it too much! (it was delicious)

Speaking of...any of you grow or have grown Mangle Beets? They are used often in Europe for livestock feed. My friend (the farm I help at) is growing them and I took a look yesterday. THey are the size of footballs right now and have the most beautiful greens above them. She said they are good too and I picked one and ate it. OMG! It was the sweetest and best tasting beet green I have ever had! These werent young leaves either. They were easily a foot long. THe rib was just as good too. I am planning on adding them to my garden next year. They did not appear to have any pest problems(she is all organic[even chicken feed] there) and the leaves had no holes at all. I brought some home and made DH a salad to go with his dinner. He actually messaged me and said it was delicious! Tonight I am making a wilted "spinach" salad with hot bacon dressing with the rest of the leaves...tomorrow I go back and am going to get more!

OK--time to head out. The beet discussion got me all excited about cooking now! LOL! Have a good one! TerriO

I doubt any obedience would work with her as she's been allowed to run free for over 10 years like this. Now Dog just got my show Buff Orp Bantam. She will be going back today.

This incubation time around is a complete fail. I have 3 hatched out of the 40+ that were in the old round incubator and have killed 5 of them due to a drop in humidity. I have since moved half to my homemade and half to the Brinsea. They are on day 24 but candling them looks like their behind due to the temp drop I noticed a few days ago. One I did help as it was shrink wrapped was very deformed, the beak wasn't fully formed below nostrils and the eyes weren't in the right location so we culled. Im not sure if I should just stop them all now or let them go longer and hope for no more deformed chicks. The 3 that did hatch are well but were awfully wet and had yoke parts not fully absorbed. I have one Leghorn that I helped as it was shrink wrapping but seems the membrane is too thick. Its still breathing and is half covered by shell yet. Im keeping the membrane moist so it doesn't re-shrink to it as I had one do that overnight and it couldn't get out and died.

Cool pics french and awesome tractor judi. Deli I couldn't count the chicks from my phone as the pic was so small. I can't remember what else I read but hope everyone is good. Oh Yvette gl on your eggs hatching.
What a bummer! I'm soooo sad for you!!
I have been working with my blonde dog and for three days straight he has done his level best to ignore the loose chickens. He may have figured out that those are his chickens to defend and not to eat or he made the correlation between the chickens being out and him having to wear the muzzle. He hates the muzzle. He is also afraid of turkeys after being chased and pecked on the hind end after stealing a wild turkey's baby.

Speaking of turkeys, My 2 bronze broad breasted are doing well(huge) and wandering the yard as well. All the chattering they do has attracted the wild turkey moms and kids into the yard. They come in shifts and as many as 5 moms and 25 youngins'. The other day a delivery guy came and my 2 bronze were sitting on the porch and wouldn't move to let him ring the bell. I went out to meet him, and he was all interested in buying one to eat. I told him that I only had 2 and he said then sell me one of those while pointing to the 20 in the front yard. I said he could have as many as he could catch for free.

Checking in on the WI thread, hello everybody!

Are you guys heading to the Portage show this weekend? Planning on being there with a few token Iowa Blues for grins. If you see me, say Hi! :)

Here are a couple of my girls that showed last weekend in Mason City...

One took best of breed for the first show, the other took best of breed for the second. We did manage to have 6 silver pullets there, so some actual competition for the breed. :) I thought they made a nice display.
Congrats, Connie! Those are some very beautiful birds!!

It's nice to catch up with everyone again--it seems as though life just gets so psycho insane all of the time--single mom-ing can be a challenge.

It also seems that I come crawling back when I have a problem. We were so devastated to go out on Sunday morning to find that three of our five birds were just...gone. Poof. And the run was still secured, and the gates were still closed on the yard, and there were no feathers or anything.

My daughter is especially hit hard by this. Two of the girls she works closely with and are the most tame--I would assume that that's maybe why they were easy to catch and haul off. It just breaks my heart that these birds that we have loved and put so much energy into are just gone. I knew you guys would understand, so I am coming over here for a group hug.

Yeah, Waukesha isn't too far, I work there. Unfortunately, when I'm in Waukesha, I'm running my tookus off solid until I can escape back to my little piece of heaven. LOL
I hear ya... Well, I've got 3 boys ages 8, 5 and 2. So if you ever want to meet in the middle somewhere on a day when the kids have off just let me know.

*Hugs* Jessica! That is God awful! Do you have a trail cam you can set up in your yard?
