Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Jim, I was just at Fleet today but didn't think of milkhouse heaters. Guess I'll just go with a couple heat lamps. I'm not big on heating the coops but with my Brahma roo acting so strange this morning and a hen with no feathers I feel I have no choice in order for them to make it with a low of -26* and high of -13* coming. All the rest of the birds are doing great without it though, even the little frizzle.

SHEEP! BAAAAH BAAAAH BAAAAH

I feel better.

I am changing my heat lamp from 125 watt to the 250 watt and bolting the door on my chickens for the cold snap.

Oops! I meant to say for her website lol
I never give out my addy either. I meet people off cl at the gas station. I feel a little weird about inviting them to my home. You never know the weirdos out there!
Cs, sounds like you are keepi g those kiddos nice n busy. If mine get too bored/ argumentative there is always chores that need to be done!
Del, glad casha is feeling well. No smooking will be easier when you get your e-cig. Just make sure to slowly decrease the nicotine level. I made the mistake of going too fast. And started up smoking again. I now do a little of both. Last time I will mention it. I know, just about the time you're not thinking of it someone brings it up ;-)

The kids already did the chores and the boredom definitely had set in. Also, my dad was getting edgy with having everyone home and his control-freak personality was about to go haywire!
This is what I was going to say too! I certainly would IF I could get an unfrozen egg AND save them up until I had a dozen! Vicky, I copied your recipe down and saved it. I love HM egg nog the best. I have never tempered the eggs though....I will try your method and see if I like it. Thanks! Glad Casha is doing better too!
Liza's numbers were way down and we doubled her Pred. She seems a bit better. I think it is all we can hope for though since I feel it is an immune reaction from cancer. We are feeding her good (and she is helping herself too--*see above--LOL) Hopefully she will make another bash--I know she loves all you guys! Especially the kids that drop their plates on the ground!
Oh Noooooooo!

Just kidding Carol! Welcome back...again! Welcome to the new Burlington person too...this post is getting too long and I cant look for your proper name (sorry) cause I dont want it to evaporate! Glad you decided to come out of "lurkdom"

I guess I will have to stop this procrastination now...those birdies are probably pretty thirsty by now...heading out now that the sun has made an appearance!
Stay warm and safe--TerriO

(PS) I keep forgetting to post this pick of me on Christmas Eve...I do think we should have a "jammie contest" at this spring's bash! (DrH--sorry, you cannot compete--we KNOW what you sleep in!)

LOL!
OMG TO! I love it! My DH says he's gonna get me one next Christmas.

The water is starting to freeze again. I guess the air temp is too cold for the heated waterer? DH says that I "have to" put a heat lamp in this weekend for the chickens when it drops down. He says "it's chicken abuse". Ha! Anyway, I caved since the rabbits are in there and the water is freezing. I'll have it in there while in the negative temps I guess.

3 eggs again, one frozen and broken, the rest just frozen. Yum...scrambled eggs.

Chinatown was good. Kiddos enjoyed dim sum and looking through the shops.

The van didn't start this morning, DH had to jump it. And it died twice while we were out today. DH and my dad keep coming up with suggestions of what the problem could be or how to quickly fix "it", but I'm about to get a new van and refuse to put one more dime into it!

I was never one to heat a coop either,, I must be getting soft .. I enjoy going into the coop more when the chickens are walking around and clucking rather than sitting on the roost and saying nothing.. they just seem happier .. I guess I feel that if you can take the edge off, why not do it ?

the birthday dinner was a success.. the ribs were delicious and I am not going to eat again until probably late tomorrow..

Annie went to work, the "kids" went to a movie , I kicked the dogs outside and I am all alone.. Maybe I will get my guitar out and torture the mice ..

........jiminwisc..........

Fingers crossed my interview went well and I am called in for a face to face the week of the 20th..... I also have another interview for a different job lined up for Monday afternoon. I hope they reschedule.

Spent the rest of the day putting plastic up on the windows, preparing for the bitter cold headed our way. I stopped by the meat market today and bought everything I could think of that required long cooking times in order to keep the house heated up.

Kittens are doing well, unfortunately they remain under quarantine until a week after their second worming dose.... so the big introduction will be the week of the 20th as well.

Everyone enjoy our minor heat wave this weekend!

Mel, good luck with the interview & I hope the other one gets rescheduled.

That is just too crazy to have to go out in. A high of -8*? Down here? C'mon!

Terri, I just love those jammies! I sent DH a pic. He said, "I suppose you want those?"

Too funny!

Lauren, welcome to the Cheeseheads! I hope you like it here. As to your query, both Jim & Delisha (and JJ) had very good advice. When we have cold snaps, and especially when you will not be home, I would just disconnect the auto door to keep it from opening. We have an auto door also, and as of tomorrow evening, it is being shut for the duration. With the expected temps, I don't think the birds will mind. Brrrr! I have a couple of heat lamps in my coop too, but my coop is 20'x20' and not insulated. For the most part, my birds really do not congregate under them much, except for my banties (they have been loving those lamps lately). During the day, I will see a few birds sit under the lamp for awhile to warm up, but then they leave. I expect to see a lot more of them under them soon. As Jim said, when the birds are warmer, they just seem happier. I sure as heck would be!

I'm glad Casha & Liza are doing a bit better. The bash just wouldn't be the same without them. Fingers crossed for both of the girls!

Bigz, I couldn't agree with you more. The Packer radio announcers are the best!

That's all I can remember. Enjoy the brief heat wave & stay warm, all!

Hi All!

Welcome to the new people and the ones not here often!

I have an oil filled heater (that looks like a radiator) in my coop. I have it touching the water to keep it from freezing. It gives them an area to thaw out too. Real hard to get something to burn with one of those.

Sat. is DH's company Christmas party. I hate going but usually like the food. I just hate sitting around with people I don't know and have little in common with. DH goes off and talks to people until he feels sorry for me and comes back to sit with me. Kinda wish I had a smart phone, at least I could play a game while I sit around.

I finally got straw!!!! I paid $3 a bale and $1 ea. to have it delivered. Not happy about the price, but it would have cost close to that extra $1 a bale to go get it in that beast of a van.

Ok... time for bed (I hope)..... Night All!

Could you tell me a little more about that heater...brand name or where you got it? I've been evicted from my nice warm shop ( boyfriend put my big brooder out in the unheated garden shed) so I'm gonna need something like that or the milk house heaters when I start hatching.

I used to hate the company Christmas parties too....now I kinda miss em.

CC, how high off the floor do you put your heat lamps? I'm afraid the younger birds might want to try to sit/roost on them.
I was gonna tell you, your lav roo has a name now....Romeo. Starting Christmas day he's been flying into the next pen to visit the girls there and they just love him! Too bad they're Brahmas. He'll be getting a wing clip and his own girls in his pen this spring.
I guess that'll make the lav pullet Juliet.
