the way it should work..

the hen will lay a clutch of eggs, might take about 2 weeks to get the number she wants ..
then she quits laying and starts sitting..
she will not lay eggs anymore until these eggs hatch,, and then if she raises the chicks, she probably won't lay during that period either..

If something happens to the cycle, like her eggs get taken or destroyed, she will begin to lay eggs again until she has the number she wants, then go back to line two and read again..

to answer the question,, can she lay eggs ? probably,, will she lay eggs probably not..

This is a good info, I have a Delaware (one of last year's hatch) that seams to be going broody. Will they actually try to take and egg from one box and move it?? I don't see how, but I thought I had an egg in the first box yesterday, but came out to one whole and one broken egg is the next box over. The egg in the first box was gone

I pulled her off the next the other day so I could gather before any were broke. The others are laying for her, there were two in with her the day I disrupted her. I found someone just across the state line that has RIR's and is working on collecting a dozen eggs for me to set under her. I should have them by the end of the week - I sure hope she continues to show interest. We moved our broody coop/box into the big coop so when we get out eggs we can move her in on them.

OK - that was lengthy, someone has to fill in for Frenchie . . . but one more question

how long can I keep fertile eggs before placing them under a hen and at what temp?

chickenscratch: I agree having a broody hen and watching her raise the chicks is quite something to experience - Mother Nature's increadible.

RB, sometimes getting a good picture is just dumb luck.

I never took a class, and of course I do not put my 'best' photos online since they could be used without permission. You just think about what is pleasing to the eye, adjust your lens accordingly, try to keep you fingers out of the way and shoot!

The walk this morning was very nice, the wind was a bit brisk but it is sooooooooooo much better than what we have been dealing with I'll take it.

Jim, if I had any birds I would give you a daily report.

Yes jim, del has black orps. And I believe she has begun shipping with the nicer weather. They are english ♡
I have been trying to break broodies! I want to wait a bit longer to give them eggs I would like more purebreeds to hatch!
I think our chickies are good. I will find out at about 7:30 tonight. But they should be safe with their gaurd. Except maybe hawks.
The turkeys are laying! We have been keeping, hem on a separate schedule to oeep eggs pure. Don't ya know it, when we got home yesterday the slate blew the coop! We will see what comes of it :/

Aloha Bigfam, I think if you go to your Subscriptions page, click on "Edit my subscriptions" then scroll to the bottom of that page and just below "Stop all subscriptions email" there is a link to "Preferences page". If you click on that you find a whole slew of options and I think that is where you can establish your notifications.
