This July weather is so horrible. I have tiny babys outdoors and they are so darn cold. They are going to be stunted if this keeps up..

Anyone on here have experience selling heritage breed turkeys as a young poult or grown out to butcher weight? I have 9- 2 1/2 week olds and 4- 7 week olds. Some I will keep for our freezer and have had a couple people interested in buying one once grown out. From research I've done in big cities you can get $10+/lb. I'm pretty sure I couldn't get near that around here but wondering if anyone else had any opinions.

don't expect to compete with the turkey prices at the supermarkets .
anybody buying a turkey from a farm usually wants quality.. then they will pay a better price.
make sure you are providing the quality they are looking for..

the birds I raise for myself are not finished out on granule feeds.. I use real corn, and oats..

I am definitely not wanting to compete with grocery store meat, which we rarely eat ourselves. Homegrown or wild! That why we grow our own! We free range ours(40 acres but they don't wander too far from the coop and yard area) and they have game bird feed available, small amount of corn, fruit and veggie scraps, egg shells and the occasional meat scrap they may get into. My target market would be those that appreciate a high quality product with the understanding that these birds are not a fast growing variety and that it takes longer(more feed=more cost) for them to grow out. I am in Wisconsin, it's about 1 1/2 hours to either Eau Claire, Wausau or Marshfield.

keep a tally of what it costs you to raise one.. then you have to try to make that back, plus your time and equipment expenses.. don't sell yourself short on labor.. If you can't break out above even, don't go into the market place big, or small, time..

you will have a hard time explaining to most people about feed costs and length of time it takes to grow a bird.. all they want to know is how much American $$$..

What breeds are these?

We were told that the hen is a Narra/BR x and the tom is our RP. We had a hen but she disappeared without a trace last fall. Spring came around and he needed a friend so I found her in the newspaper and she has been a great mama, a bit nervous around us but otherwise great!

I just hatched 70 bronze turkeys for a local organic farmer..He got his eggs from Heritage Turkeys out of Waupaca..  look them up online..  they get about $65.oo and up for dressed out turkeys..  10 pounds dressed out..

I'm not 100% sure what breed they are though. They may be the broad breasted bronze or white, which grow or much faster.
