Nice day again here. I just used Vaseline for the leg mites here. Only had them once here and it worked well reapplying every few days. I believe it's awful contagious and if it is allowed unattended, a serious problem could arise.....keeping a close eye and nipping stuff in the early stages makes things so much easier to control.

Pork chops with kraut tonight....just bagged up my second batch...ended up with 10 full quarts for the freezer, and a couple for the fridge to eat and bake with...good stuff. My second batch is better than the first...just a touch more salt in that one, than I prefer.

Funny BigZ--we are having pork chops and kraut tomorrow night...I forgot to take the chips out this morning so we get to eat leftovers today! My kraut turned out great--thanks for the advice.

good evening,

got the front and back of the plucker frame dry fitted.. couldn't do any gluing tonight. the Gorilla glue got cold and was like molasses..

..
this is one of the two frames I got done tonight, the two side pieces have to be added to the legs by gluing,
this frame will have no metal fasteners,, mortise and tenon joints with some pegs added for extra strength ..

this is a bad picture of a good mortise and tenon joint,, just a tight fit, no nails..
I will be knocking this apart to glue the side pieces to the legs..
then I will route all the sharp edges round for a nice finished look..
I will keep taking pictures as i proceed ..

Hi All!!

Jim... are you going to keep that plucker? I don't think many people these days want to spend the extra bucks for the time and skill it takes for that kind of job.

Guess that's it.... Night All!

Some people are just oblivious to the faults of their friends, family, and pets. Just because the dog is good and smart at home doesn't mean he won't kill a chicken given the opportunity. The guy would probably deny it even if he saw it happen.

Nice job on the frame Jim. My boyfriend does a lot of woodworking too and I'm always amazed at how someone can take a chunk of wood and craft it into something useful and beautiful.

I lost a hen last week from the new flock I bought. I think she had a heat attack. Now I have another hen off her feed. She looks good but is not eating and I can't figure out what's wrong with her. How can you diagnose an illness when the only symptoms are that she's lethargic and not eating?

The new dog is doing well. He's very food motivated so easy to train. He still has panic attacks but if I'm near and hear one start I can stop it by distracting him. I just put my finger to my lips and go Shhhh very quietly and it snaps him out of it. Friends keep telling me you can't cure a fearful dog but I do see some improvement already so I'm going to keep trying.

Hi guys!
looks like we might not be hatching January 1st for the 4-h chickies :/ They just are not laying too well yet. I guess they will be a bit young. But what can you do? We added light and all that stuff. And are getting some pullet type eggs. So we will just have to be patient.
have been working a lot. And not even started on preparing for Christmas. We were supposed to go to a friends this weekend. But I think I will be canceling. We need to put up the tree, and I got posted to work.
Horses are good. The farrier was out Monday. And I took vaca so I could finally meet him. Super nice guy. He even stayed almost two hours! And showed me a bunch of natural horsemanship stuff I have been interested in. I had a ton of fun!
had Sydneys concert last night. So cute! And Blakes is the 19th.
Birdman, I habe been watching your thread. Pretty good work you do.
Jim, Scott loves working with the wood too. He can wip out some pretty cool project s in no time!
Have a good one!

so im almost done securing the bottoms of the four coops and then netting and then tarp..(temp)

this is the 4th plucker I am building,, I make it for myself to use, but put it up for sale as soon as it is finished,, if it sells, good, if not, then I have a nice plucker..

this is the second non-metallic fastener one that I built.. I like to do it this way, it is more time consuming, but very satisfying when it is done..

ETA
I am back in for a break,,

got two of the legs glued and clamped,, I ran out of short clamps, so I have to wait until the glue sets before I can clamp the last two legs..
may be tonight, or tomorrow..

Once again bad luck has stricken me.. Something I'm assuming a weasel or mink killed nearly all my birds lastnight. One coop had 2 chickens and a ducks head pulled thru the underneath of the coop on the outside. The other coop had 2 pulled thru a hole i forgot to cover behind the cabinet. All damage is to heads and necks although no heads ripped off, just chewed apart. Sorry for graphic photo, maybe someone else might know what did this? I'm heading to town to get some live traps to try and catch w/e it was that killed them. And may be sleeping with a gun in the coop tonight if I can't find a security camera to borrow. Lost all my SS, WW, SFH, Light Brahmas, One SS F1, Female Blue Sweded duck and 2 BLRW pullets(total of 14). When is enough enough and you just throw in the towel and give up..geez.
