Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Say, is anyone looking to raise some F1 OE? There is a lady in Union Grove who has eggs for sale. I would be willing to do an egg train for interested parties since I am in the area so often.

Should probably invite her to the group if she is not already a member........ she looks like she would fit right in.

Afternoon To Everyone, and congrats with the early hatches.

Heck ya bl4...everyone is welcome here!

Plenty of hungry wild turkeys and deer in the backyard now. Lucky for them that the snow is prolly only 8 to 10 inches on the ground here. My 4 wheeler skims the snow when it's a foot deep...that ain't happening yet this winter. Prolly 30 doves at the feeder every day....more and more seem to winter over here now.

My redneck suet feeder was attacked by a big redtail hawk yesterday...amazing how they can fly through the tree limbs.

No lights in the coops this winter, and without any pullets among the flock...we aren't collecting any eggs here this winter....we still have 5 doz left yet that we saved...the whites run a little in the pan, but still way better than store bought.

We took out the hand grinder today and made ground bologna with pickles and mayo for sandwich spread...it is way better than the stuff you buy in the deli...one can use sandwich bologna to grind as well as the rings. It works just as well.

Have Fun..bigz

I had to stop on the way home the other day because there was a huge flock of turkeys in the road. They would run to one side, then the other, then back. They just couldn't decide which empty corn field they wanted to go to. Ended up with 1/2 on each side, with turkeys flying over my truck as I slowly drove through the area.

I have also started to feed the wild birds. Wow, I need to get a bigger bird feeder or four! I expected a few birds right away, but holy cow they have bombarded my little feeder. Hopefully, the turkeys don't find these. Turkeys in the yard would really get my dog wild! I also had a huge woodpecker come through yesterday, so I need to find something for him also. Ha ha

My mom always made sandwich spread, mine is never quite as good. We have always used a chunk of sandwich bologna, never thought of using the ring bologna. Wisconsin is the only place I have ever seen it on the grocery stores.

Good evening to you all.

Welcome to modern technology Delisha

. I bet you have more time now that you don't have to fill waters all of the time! Is it too early to candle your eggs that you are concerned about being damaged?

Jim-its hard to think that Theo will be a year in 6 days! He has gotten so big and is such a delight. I'll have to get a picture of him with his favorite toy one of these days.

Yvette-sorry about your bird!

bl4- It sure was great to see you while you were in town and I can't wait to see your cake!

All is good here. We will move into part of the new building (at work) at the end of next week. I've been getting some of the old labs emptied and planning for the new labs.

I've got a broody which I love as she keeps the eggs from freezing

Otherwise, not much else happening here...happy to hear that Rodgers in the 2014 MVP! Counting down until Sunday!!!!!

been keeping busy these days- trying to read and keep up, sounds like everyone is busy!

DS(13 years) just turned 13 years old on the 13th- DH's birthday is this coming Sunday- waiting to celebrate with the extended family next week Sat. DD will be traveling to Washington DC to attend the Agri- science summit being held at the National 4-H Conference center- she will leave early this Friday morning and return Monday late afternoon.

We hatched out 14 blue Andalusian chicks yesterday- this is our 1st hatch for the year(we usually try and have a New Year day hatch but cant hatch without eggs) so far they are doing good. Not sure if we will set eggs for another hatch or not- space is pretty limited this year.

Our Golden Lace Wyandotte has started laying eggs- found the 1st one today. It is lighter than our Welsummer eggs so there should be no problem telling them apart!

Hoping the weather warms up this weekend- our coop really needs to be cleaned out

Have a good one!

I sent the lady in Union Grove an invite to the site, I hope she makes it on here!

CS, I will certainly post pics! Been working out the final details in my head...... good thing I am making a shopping trip tomorrow! I need supplies!

Unfortunately the sale of the house my cousin was going to buy fell through...... she was really looking forward to moving to the country and getting chickens!

That is the news at 11 here. :D

good evening,
it might have been warmer temperature wise today, but with the humidity, it sure felt cold..

I gassed up the truck and bought gas for the tractor,, I want to clean out the driveway a bit prolly tomorrow..

Annie found Old Tommy dead in the coop today.. now all I have left is the old colored rooster.. It wouldn't hurt my feelings if he turned toes up , too..

One of the puppies has learned how to crawl over the top of the corral.. I hope the others are not watching and learning ..

sold one female,, 1 female and 2 males left..

I told Annie that if we don't sell the rest, I will go shopping for a dog sled.. I think four or five of these long legged dogs could really move along ..

I have a neighbor who has or had sled dogs.. I would have to learn about harnesses and commands..

wouldn't that be fun ??

Hello! I am a chicken newbie. I've read a lot, but have a Wisconsin question (actually about a thousand questions, but one specifically related to WI). I have ordered a large, fixed, coop. We live in the country, with lots of choices for placement. I have read that keeping the coop cool in the summer is more important than keeping them warm in the winter. As I hate the cold, my inclination is to put the coop close to the house, protected from the wind, on the south side where it would receive much sun, but very little shade. When there is not snow on the ground, I expect to move a large pen from place to place in the yard to let them be out but protected. The coop will have electric, so I can use a heat source if desired. I could have the coop farther away from the house and in shade if that is really what is best for the chickens even though it would be less convenient for me. I am just wondering since our winters are SO cold, and our summers are mostly mild (and since in summer I can move their portable pen into the shade) should the permanently placed coop location be driven by our winter weather or summer? We are getting six silkies, and with my four kids, they will be an important part of our family, so we want to do what is best for them. I know I'm not a chicken, but it seems like the cold will be so much harder to deal with!

make it easy on yourself,, I would set it close to the house for winter wind protection,
also it makes the path to travel through the snow shorter..
for shade, you can improvise a tarp over your movable fence if needed..
if the summer gets very hot, just put ice into a dish and let them drink the thawed water..

Hi All!

elmo.... glad you stopped by.

Jim... too bad about Old Tommy. I know you hated the work, but it's nice to look out and see the birds.

Nothing new here...... Night All!
