Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Coonhound...you can test your own flock....but you have to be certified to do it...and the antigen is very very costly. Some folks will do it for maybe 2 to 5 bucks a bird if you come to them for testing.

Well that sucks. We always sold our birds for $5! It was never a money game for us. It was our overflow. But there's no sense in basically raising thm for nothing. Guess I'm faced with a big life decision. My birds are healthy, always have been. This makes me sad :(

Whoops don't know why that last post turned out goofy lol dang phone...
I , for one , agree with you,, nobody wants to pay more than $5.oo for a chicken, and then you have to add the cost of testing .. you have to get at least $10.oo just to break even,,

It costs about $5.oo to raise a meaty (cornish X rock) to butchering size..

what you can do is list them on Craig's List ..

I'm not alone hallelujah! Lol. I can't see the sense in turning a $5 bird into anything more. Its not fair to anyone. I always enjoyed selling at fair price and had regulars who looked for me because of it. Feel sad for them especially. I took such joy in all of this. Now its over. Truly sad day.

jim five bucks really....where is a good source to buy them from
Sunnyside Hatchery,, the chicks are about $1.30 each,,
I called Sunnyside and was told it takes 19 pounds of feed to raise one for 10 weeks ..
for a hundred X;s it would be about a ton of feed,,

I am going to order some early April,, anc butcher them in 8 to 10 weeks.. I am ordering the pullets.. we freeze whole chickens in plastic bags, and the pullets fit in the bags better because of their shorter legs..

I agree also as pollurum is the least of my worries when it comes to raising and selling. But it is the state law and every swap I sell at other than one checks paperwork and requires a copy of my state certificate in order to enter. Most testers charge .50 per bird and mileage. Their are a few that advertise on FB and do multiple testing in one day to split the gas cost between them.

And yes as Jim stated, there is always Craigslist and local sales.

Is it really a state law ??
Yes sir it is. Even now if you take one of your birds off your property it's suppose to be tested, but that is not regulated as are alot of the laws. Year prior to last you could have some of your breeders tested and still sell chicks at swaps. Last year they changed it and you have to have the Wisconsin Tested Flock proof in order to sell chicks/anything under 4 months.
