Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Well we've decided we're going to get rid of majority of our birds due to this. I can't see any sense in making a $5 into a $10 bird over a silly piece of paper. I never made money, I just enjoyed raising them and selling them to people for a fair price. I guess I'll be picking up eggs on a regular basis to make sure I don't have any hatch. Maybe I'll sell the eggs. Or are their laws against that too now? Sad world this is becoming I tell ya. No lie I've cried multiple times already trying to decide who stays and goes. We've tried having kids for 8 years now with no luck, so this is what I did instead. At least I've still got my sheep to make me babies every year. Or until someone tells me I can't sell them either I guess. Sorry I'm ranting now but I hope you understand why :)

You may be right Jim, now that I think of it. Something to the effect that is to be regulated by the department(my brain isn't functioning properly this am for the correct words I want to say). I know their is one swap in question that could be facing fines and being shut down for not following the "rules". Nothing of my doing, I just heard of it as their were many complaints. blah blah.

No way I'd get that upset over this to the point of dispersing your flock. You are still able to sell privately.
Also they just passed it so you the small backyard people who raise poultry can sell their eggs at the Farmers Markets(not entirely sure of the rules involved but think it went to the effect of less than 100 birds or something like that)

I'm not getting rid of everything. I just can't allow the amount I usually had to sell happen anymore now that I don't have a reliable outlet to sell. The swap was a guarantee. People showing up here isn't. I'll always have birds just in smaller numbers. Sorry if I seem like I'm freaking out its just been very upsetting.

Is it really a state law ??

every state is different....but this is how michigan works....if you are npip certified you cannot receive any eggs/birds from someone that is not npip, otherwise you will lose your npip license...if you are npip and you get birds in state you can do this with no paperwork as the npip is a voluntary program and works on your honesty...another bad part about this program...so dont think if you have a dishonest person that is certified clean that you are receiving clean birds....also there is different levels...the basic one is pullorum/typhoid (p-t) dont quote me on the spelling....but this is the minimum requirement...then there is avian influenze (ai) free...which after so many birds you have to actually get a vet to test and costs about 600 bucks....they test randomly...and then there is Mycoplasma gallisepticum (mg), Mycoplasma synoviae, Mycoplasma meleagridis, and salmonella enteritidis...each level is tested differntly and costs the person more for each test...that prolly y you see people with the cheapest basic (p-t) test done. more then likely you would get a non-commercial subpart e license which covers (waterfowl, exhibition, game birds, and backyard flocks)
In order to be a NPIP flock, the following must occur:
  1. Annual P-T Testing
  2. AI Testing
  3. Annual Premises Inspection
  4. Annual Records Audit
Annual P-T Testing
For Subpart E, the number of birds tested each year for P-T is dependant on the number birds in your flock. Flocks with 1-999 birds will have 25% of their flock tested (minimum 30 birds). Flocks with 1,000 birds or more will have 10% of the flock tested (maximum 300 birds). Testing Methods:
  • WSDA performs field test:
    • Participants will be responsible for costs associated with the time it takes to test birds for P-T, set-up/clean-up for the testing process, and laboratory fees for any field reactors. It takes approximately 30 minutes for set-up and clean-up, and ~2 minutes for each bird tested.
    • P-T testing fees will be incurred at $85.00 an hour and will be billed in half hour increments.
  • Sending blood samples to the lab:
    • A trained person (private practitioner, vet tech, owner, etc.) can collect blood samples and send them to the Washington State University (WSU) Avian Health and Food Safety Lab in Puyallup.
    • Participants are responsible for paying laboratory costs. Testing costs approximately $1-$2 dollars a bird, plus a $10 administration fee.

AI testing
30 birds will be AI tested once a year. Participants can participate in the H5/H7 Avian Influenza Clean Program. The AI Clean Program consists of 30 birds tested for AI every 90 days. While federal funding is available, WSDA will pay for AI testing.

Annual Premises Inspection
As a participant, your premises will be inspected by a WSDA veterinarian annually. During the annual inspection the WSDA veterinarian will look look at the sanitation of your poultry houses, hatching rooms, egg handling rooms, etc.

Annual Records Audit
As a participant of NPIP, a WSDA veterinarian will conduct an audit of your records for the birds purchased that year. As a participant, you can only purchase birds from NPIP participants. The record audit verifies that you are only purchasing NPIP stock.

SO IN OTHERWORDS MAKE SURE YOU HAVE PAPERWORK FOR ALL BIRDS YOU HAVE IF YOU WANNA BE CERTIFIED...AND GET YOUR PAYCHECK AND GIVE IT TO THEM...JUST GETTING QUAIL FROM SOMEONE THAT IS IN CALLY AND THEY ARE PT, AND AI CLEAN...HE SAID JUST FOR THE AI TEST WAS 600....WOW....MAKES ME WANNA THINK AGAIN ABOUT GETTING TESTING DONE...HOWEVER YOU CAN GO TO THE CLASSES AND TEST YOUR OWN BIRDS AND GET THE GUN READER AND THE SOLUTION TO TEST YOUR OWN BIRDS...BOTH OF THEM COMBINED ARE CLOSE TO 300 BUCKS AND TESTS ABOUT 1000 SAMPLE...IF A TEST COMES OUT POSITIVE THEY TEST THE BIRD ON THE OTHER WING IF IT STILL COMES OUT POSITIVE THEN SAY GOODBYE TO YOUR BIRD.
