You can sell EATING eggs without being tested,, you can sell dead birds without being tested..

according to what I just read, any bird leaving your property has to be tested,,

So, I have this question,, if you buy birds from a NPIP or tested flock, why should you have to quarantine them ??

because they only are tested for pollurum, not mg/ms and so many other diseases.

Well we've decided we're going to get rid of majority of our birds due to this. I can't see any sense in making a $5 into a $10 bird over a silly piece of paper. I never made money, I just enjoyed raising them and selling them to people for a fair price. I guess I'll be picking up eggs on a regular basis to make sure I don't have any hatch. Maybe I'll sell the eggs. Or are their laws against that too now? Sad world this is becoming I tell ya. No lie I've cried multiple times already trying to decide who stays and goes. We've tried having kids for 8 years now with no luck, so this is what I did instead. At least I've still got my sheep to make me babies every year. Or until someone tells me I can't sell them either I guess. Sorry I'm ranting now but I hope you understand why

Ummmm............. how are you going to get rid of your birds if you aren't going to get them tested? I'm not trying to be rude; I'm just saying you might have a problem there.

I do think you would be better off selling your birds via CL rather than a once yearly swap though. Some people may not be able to make it to a swap on a specific date. Keep reposting your ad every week & you should do fine. And if you don't want them coming to your house, offer to meet them somewhere. I sold some roosters last fall for $5 and one gal drove almost 2 hours for one of them.

Coknhound, it sounds as tho you have had a bad experience. Take a breath and wait to make a quick decision.
You can still sell localy atm. I do not think the rates are that crazy to sell at swaps. And be sure to advise your buyers on quarantine. As long as your flock os healthy go for it.
I am sorry that I do not know the prices. However I believe you can get your "flock" certified once a year. Do some homework before jumping out.
I remember Judy posting the # to anplace that has a lot of these answers. Does anybody else have that info. I can't find it saved I. My contacts atm.

We get our birds twstwd so they can show at our local fair.
I will attempt to get in touch with the gentleman who does this for us to see if he can shed some light.

My decision wasn't reached lightly. My husband and I had discussed. I'm not getting rid of everything I'm just cutting way way back. Going to raise only what we and our family members need. I get overly emotional sometimes, I apologize.

also with the certification of npip...it is based on honesty of the farmer....so lets say he gets his npip and then gets some birds and they have positive tested p-t and then sells them to you before his certification guy comes back...then he has dirty birds...just what i think is that no matter what you should put them in separate pens...cause they could be npip...however they do random testings...so if one of the birds doesnt have anything and you buy that bird...you get what im saying...in michigan they dont test every single bird....and i believe they only test once a year....that being said....anything can show up without the guy being honest....im mean look at the people selling birds everywhere...ebay..even here.....how many of them are actually sending the legal import form vs9-3 to the place they just sold eggs/birds to....maybe 10 percent...even with the super expensive birds..alot of breeders have said flat out...i dont have them forms....now you get someone that is not npip and there selling eggs/birds...they def are not sending out a proof of certified health of the birds....therefore you are illegally obtaining a package...very few people actually follow the rules because then they have to actually jump thru hoops with paperwork....and if you have paperwork and you run out....and then you sell birds/eggs....do you think they wait for the paperwork...alot of people view this approach as not my problem when it leaves my hands....because they are not going to get into trouble for receiving a package...they just want the payment...it just shows you how the land of the free and home of the brave works....PEOPLE ARNT GOING TO WAIT FOR A FORM TO GET WHAT THEY WANT....$...EVEN THE HATCHERIES...JUST LIKE THE IMPORT GUY SAYS ITS VERY HARD TO TRACK AND FIND SOMETHING ON THIS NATURE...UNLESS WE ARE TIPPED OFF ABOUT IT....same thing goes for the npip...how are you to know that every bird that was at such place was tested and no birds came in since then....YOUR NOT...its based on honesty...and lets face it....well most people are not going to be following to the t because one they dont do there research on the matter or two they just dont know. and the people that do the research and do everything right you see their birds going for higher prices because of the costs that are involved...and like everyone has said...who would pay ten bucks when i can get them for five....you know who the ten dollar birds are from compared to the five dollar birds...but you still buy the five dollar birds because it fits your needs...you just take a huge risk in doing so....most places will charge you five dollars for the forms because "it takes up there time" and very few people ask for it....
