Thanks for all the great tips so far!
I'm having a hard time keeping up with everyone, please tell me if my questions are obnoxious.
I've read a lot about bedding/flooring in the coop and run. What do you all use, since it seems climate has an effect?

My coop has a dirt floor. Bedding is a combination of dried leaves, pine shavings, and straw in the winter, with the addition of some freshly mowed grass in the summer to keep the composting process going.

It is a job at a cheese factory in QC, and no weekends so yes I will be at the Bash.

Winter Morning here...did you get lucky enough to land the job right in town bl4? They were a customer of mine for close to 30 years. Prolly everyone in the office there that I knew is retired. I also has Fremont Foods as a customer for the same amount of time...then your commute to New London would still be a short one....spill the beans please.....

I use pine shavings during the summer, and add dry leaves and pine needles in the fall, and then I use straw all winter, because of it's good insulation for birds that choose to sleep on the floor.

I do not think you want me to bring this kind of cheese......... and they do not hand out samples as far as I know. I can bring a sampler platter from our local cheese factory, BigZ can bring a selection from DuPont Cheese and we could have a competition.

Now My mom has this flu........ stubborn lady! She thought it was just a virus and could run around like normal, and now she is paying for it. She came down with it on Sunday and since she did not rest she is back to running a fever. My brother and his family are coming for Easter next Wednesday, so she really needs to get over this!

Bedding - I use straw and/or marsh hay when I can get it. I supplement it with pine chips when I need to and shredded paper when I'm desperate.

I lost one of the big girls last night. She was fine in the evening - never showed any kind of distress or lethargy - just fell off the roost during the night. Cupcake was one of my beautiful Light Bramhas. Cookie doesn't know what to do now she misses her buddy.

Eric Clapton is now attacking the hubs as well as me. (I just grab the shovel when I walk in the coop and he gives me a wide berth.) Too bad Eric didn't hit the floor instead of sweet Cupcake!

Baby is here! A daughter after 3 boys! Emma Jane, 8#, 20", born at home on Mar 11. She and I are doing great, my mom is here taking care of us all. Enjoying our babymoon.

I missed the board meeting on the poultry ordinance (I was in labor!) but good news: pretty much everything was stripped out and they'll come back to a watered diwn version later. So roosters ok, any size coop ok, duplexes ok, egg signs ok, and no fees. Hoorah! Julie said the town hall was packed! Hee hee!

I just want to smooch those cheeks..what a doll..

Hello everybody, I'm new here and actually from the UP. But, I'm a huge Packer fan (my husband is a Lions fan...his only fault). Both of our children currently live in Milwaukee and I spend a lot of time visiting and shopping in Wisconsin. So, I figured those of you that live in Northern Wisconsin would be better resources for me.

I currently do not have any chickens, but we are finally building our new home on 40 acres and one of the first orders of business will be adding chickens. We do have a 8'x12' or 12'x16' (we don't remember how big we built it!) building that will be used for the coop. I am hoping to raise mostly egg layers, however I am mentally preparing myself for some birds to end up in the freezer. Right now I am reading everything I can get my hands on and trying to be patient!

I was wondering about what people put down for bedding inside the coop, and then in the run as well -- I've seen several articles/threads about sand, and pine shavings, and horse pellets, and etc....was curious about what you all use.
