running around here like mad, seems like I am getting nothing done..
I want to get at draining the gas out of Ollie, but chicken things keep popping up..
I modified two more hatching trays ..put 1/4" mesh over the 1/2 mesh .. the tiny chicks tended to slip through the 1/2" holes..
I set 5 dozen (62) eggs for one of the Hmong ladies.. she understood the problem I had with the temp and bad hatch,, but she cannot convince the other two ladies that it was an accident.. they will not bring any eggs here , even though I told them I would not charge them for incubating ..
That is what happens when you hatch for people who don't understand that things can and do go wrong sometimes ..
I composted the unhatched eggs..
now I have to transfer some eggs into the hatcher..
now that it is warmer outside, I will take the keets out to their new home in the chicken coop..
speaking of guineas; in the summer time their diet is largely insects and seeds.. I keep a pan of grain out for any of the birds that want some.. the guineas visit the feeder during the day..
at night I encourage them to go into a coop.. owls and hawks like to dine on the sleeping birds..
all other predators eat them the rest of the time..
If you want them for tick and insect control., you have to let them freerange the area you want protected.. they can't pick a bug from the coop..
i like to start the spring with about 20 to 30 guineas.. if I have half of them left in the fall, I had a good year..
they eat whatever I am feeding the chickens..
