easy to clean? easy to feed and water ? easy to move ?
I couldn't buy something based on pictures.. I would have to see it in person..

We're getting our pug this weekend! AND a friend offered to give me a couple of calves this morning. Twins that were just born. Holstein x Jersey. I'll go pick them up tomorrow if he hasn't changed his mind before then.

No, the bread was not moldy. It was fresh. Thanks for the tip on yogurt, and what or where do I get electrolites?

Most feed stores should have them. In a pinch you could use Gatorade, but the stuff made for poultry is best. Sav-A-Chick in the little single use packets are vitamins & electrolytes but you would be cheaper off getting a bottle or bag. Tractor Supply carries an 8oz. bag for $4.99.

ETA: When the temperatures get extreme in the summer or winter, I always add vitamins/electros to my flocks water to help keep them healthy.

Hey everyone, new member here, glad to find a Cheesehead group!

As far as toughness, my husband always brines our homegrown chicken, which helps a lot. If you google "brine for chicken" you should find lots of simple brine recipes. I know the recipe he uses has soy sauce in it, and it always turns out great, even when grilled. Let me know if you want me to post it here for you.

Firstchic, the dark pink blooming tree could be a crabapple or possibly a dogwood? The white one could be too. Do they look the same with the leaves & fruit? Also, how old is your red star?

Hi all--just read through about 20 pages...WOW is all I can say! I am dealing with a fox too--who ever is also looking at that...I have lost many, many birds to her/him and am getting frustrated. My fence worked for so long but not the nasy critter is coming through the big barn doors I have open for the horses! I saw it in the barn when I went out to investigate the other night...I think I know where the den is,,,it might end up with SSS. Good luck with the Eagle solution...that would be a tough one!

THe chicken that has a messy butt--sounds like it is an internal layer or is egg bound. You can feel the egg in the canal if you palpate the area. If the bird is something like a Comet, red star, special black...they lay about 1.5 years and then get this ailment and then they die. That is the nature of a big layer type. If it is a heritage breed there are things that you can do...best to look at the ailments area of the site...tons of info! The bread didnt do it. Not saying that you should follow my practice but I frequently clean out my fridge right in to the chicken bucket and there is some mighty scary stuff in there!

I have seen those coops of FB too and they do look nicely built. With all the problems I am having lately I think that would be the way to go--4 hens and NOTHING ELSE! LOL--yea right...

Oh yeah...clear to sell eggs but not to move birds in or out...I am sitting on a lot of goslings, quail, chicks and ducklings right now...I sure hope this goes away soon!

Well, we only have one cherry tree. It's blossoming out now (white blossoms - very fragrant). So that doesn't need a mate and is self-pollinating. I believe pear and apple trees need a cross pollinator tree to bear fruit. We have a Macintosh apple tree, one variety I can't remember, and then two Honey Crisp. You might just have crabapples if the fruit stays small? Post a pic and maybe we can figure it out.

So, it would not hurt the other chickens to drink this? Cause I cannot figure out how to feed the yogurt to this one chick as I have no way to separate from the flock. But, I could put the electrolyte in the water.

I hate to say it but your red is not going to get better. As Terri said, those hybrid birds (red stars, gold comets, black stars & all the other fancy names) are bred for a specific reason: to produce mass quantities of eggs at a young age then burn out & go to freezer camp. Essentially she is dying from "old age", or more accurately, her organs are shutting down. There isn't anything you can do to prevent this. I am really really sorry. I too had them very early in my chicken keeping years and it was a bitter lesson to learn. I really dislike that the places you can buy chicks from do not more accurately inform the public of what the hybrid breeds are bred for. But all they care about is the almighty dollar & the ease in sexing the chicks. They don't have to pay anyone to sex chicks.

I wish I had better a prognosis for your girl. So sorry.

Vitamins/electros will not hurt your chickens. It is kind of like a sports drink for animals. I give it to my birds a lot in summer and winter to help them through the stresses of extreme temperatures. I also like buying it in the bags because I can adjust the strength of it. I don't usually make it full strength unless it is super hot out. In winter I mix it up at half the dosage for a little pick-me-up. HTH
