although it is not impossible ,, possums are quite rare up where FT Sandi lives..I would rule out birds of prey, fox, coyotes, and mink/weasels on that dead chicken. My guess would be possum.

they just don't seem to be that far North.. even here in the middle of the state, I have never seen one and I am 72 years old.. I have seen them way South many times..Why would opossum's be a rarity where Frenchie lives???????
I just saw a possum early Saturday morning(4am) on my way to the swap in Wheeler, it was closer to my place. I'm not sure where FT lives.they just don't seem to be that far North.. even here in the middle of the state, I have never seen one and I am 72 years old.. I have seen them way South many times..
I have seen dead ones on the highway,, what usually happens, is they are hitching a ride on a truck coming from the South, and they fall off..
I dont believe that an opposum will kill a chicken.(poke, poke, poke) They love eggs, will eat something that is already dead but really just like to come up on the porch and eat cat food! If you startle them they will hiss and look all mean...just tap them with a stick (they wont even bit down if you put the stick in their mouth!) and they will fall down and "play possum"--then you just pick them up by the tail and escort them out of the coop. Easy peasy!
A fox on the other hand....today is gun purchase day my red friend....

You're right, that's as silly as saying a skunk would do something like that.
