Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Kildare, I never had pred problems either until this year. So sorry for your losses.

You hit the nail on the head about raising chickens.

Sorry Bobi, I don't know what your mystery breeds are. The buff looks a bit too dark to be an orp but I have been wrong before.

Cind, congrats on son buying a new home. That is wonderful he will be so close by.

Congrats on the baby & grandbabies.
For GP & GM, babies are the best. I live with one of mine- I have 7 total. And 4 GGB. The one I live with is a yapper, altho, you can't understand a word he says, but, daddy must be Italian, because he uses his hands all the time when he talks.

Nice Late Morning here....kildare, that sounds really strange not to have at least some feathers from a fox attack. How large were the meaties? One could easily make it look like a predator and take off with the flock....shoulda been some struggle and lost feathers in my opinion. Keep us posted if you find any signs of the losses.

Congrats to your # one also.....

Cind great news about the son owning a home nearby, and your son in Hawaii is doing great too....good for them...nothing like success.

Same thing happened here! One of my ducks just vanished. A rooster got grabbed too but he left a lot of feathers. And this is also the first year I've had predator attacks.

Before I had dogs it was always this time of year when mother raccoons appeared. Maybe one realized the dogs were not a threat.

Exactly 3 weeks old. I was able to find 1st staging area ( were the fox stashed close to coop...and then went and got another one. ).

It was late when I got home & it had rained. Dog was not able to trail to final cache site.
There was still one chick at the 1st staging site.

Oh well.. fix the chinks in the armor and do it all over again.

Has anyone ever tried rangers? ( with this setback..I'm only going to do 1 batch...I can easily do the extra weeks to get 2 weight ).

I haven't done the rangers, but with sunnyside so close and cheap, I would get some more cornishx and get er done....you would have to deal with shipped chicks....and I'm not sold on a better breed from what I've read.....give em a try and let us know your opinion on them...that would be nice to have a local experience with them.

peace..bigz

To everyone in this forum: I have been following this thread for a couple of months now and I'm a bit disappointed. Obviously most of you have been very practical in your breed selections, you work hard, you celebrate with friends and family. Where is the chicken enabling? The guilty confessions of dysfunctional behavior? Surely there are some here who want to confess to buying some silly kind of bird. Moreover, don't you want to list each frivolous breed (along with age, sex, number available, and price)? Anybody? Just let it all out, you'll feel better. And don't forget to mention your location or distance to major city.

Sorry, but I don't understand the thought behind what you just said....not every post gets a answer...right away....plenty of attitudes from folks that know it all and share their knowledge when they have time...please be patient and don't expect anything....then you won't be dis appointed ..in my opinion.

We celebrate life with backyard chickens. Hope you can enjoy our thread and be a friend....have something good to say?....say it!

Hey Kildare49, don't know what you consider central WI, but if you live somewhat close to Hortonville, Bricks Hardware sells CornishX and there is only a $6 shipping cost on any quantity, I believe.
