Cindy... Love the name of your sons friends boat and hope it stays right side up

Chicken laying the cracked watery egg is still laying less cracked but just as watery. Her butt is still raw red looking even after treating with Lotromin and Scarlex spray.. so she will have one more week on this good earth and then we will have to make a hard decision to send her to a better place... How does everyone recommend doing that? Have heard different ways... one good twist and breaking a neck or do we use a very sharp knife... I think a 22 is kinda overkill and a bb not enough... Sorry to be gruesome all, but the girls are for eggs and seeing her not with a healthy fluffy butt makes me think she is not feeling well from the inside out...

Cuties wow that is a relief to hear the tails develop sooner!! So far I can see a definite comb forming on one, that is much bigger... I know one day to tell for sure will be the cock=a=dooddle=doo, then I will have to practice freezer camp or just maybe a fresh chicken dinner if it is only one...Crossing fingers and toes

Poor neighbors dog lives half a city block away... across the field and I can hear him barking away in the house... Thank goodness he is not in their back yard as usual.

Ahhh sun is coming out think we are heading to New Glarus... Beer, Bacon and Cheese fest... Doesn't that sound yummy!!

Me and Suzie spent another couple hours pulling and hoeing for the crop to come. It's perfectly ok to pray for a good harvest...but don't forget to keep hoeing and weeding!

Consider yourself lucky Cind to have such a good child...what a blessing, eh!

Venison steaks on the grill topped off with gorgonzola cheese, boiled potatoes with sour cream fresh herbs, mixed veg and of course a great wine to top it off!!! Dang this is good! Glad we butchered our own deer this year; these steaks are from what is supposed to be a leg roast, but this deer was sooooooo tender there is no need to cook it to death.

The pottery festival was neat, I was disappointed that many vendors did not take cc. In this day and age most people do not carry a checkbook or copious amounts of cash. Beautiful pieces...... unfortunately I did not buy everything I wanted since I still have so many kiddos who could possibly break them.

good afternoon, and what a busy day it was..

went out for breakfast, picked up our Blazer, GS Kalib doesn't need it anymore.. it only drives in 2nd gear, so the top speed is about 40 mph at 2500 rpm..

the goats are gone...

the call ducks are in negotiations.. more.

lots of negotiations for puppies going on,, might have all the males sold and one of the females..

the old colored rooster died.. he was at least 8 years old.. must really suck to go through a tough winter , just to die when it finally gets nice in the spring ..

MomG,, drink a few New Glarus anyhow.. I will have a spotted cow on this end to help you celebrate..

Annie and I went to a meeting one time.. only to find out we were a week early .. and we were not very old at the time, either..

Cind, that does not seem like the size of a boat that I would want to lose sight of land in .. have DS fly and let the girl captain take it across ..

Hi All!

I got the young birds swapped around to their new dig. Went to check the ones moved to the coop about an hour ago..... NO BIRDS!!! They were all huddled in the run.

I chucked them back through the pop door and I think they got the hint. I know, it has to be scary for them.

Yea, the size of the boat worries me too. I guess it made the trip twice before the boys bought it though. The Gal that is going to captain it made the trip a couple of times too. She's sailed all over the world so this is no big deal to her. I think Jon will have to fly back to work anyway.

Firstchick... sorry about Gimpy.

For those of you who were interested in the results of the latest necropsy I had done by the state lab, the report came in last week. The bird tested positive for Mycoplasma Synoviae. The different strains of Mycoplasma generally start showing as upper respiratory infections but weaken the birds opening them up to secondary infections...that's why my birds suffered from chronic diarrhea and many of the hens developed egg peritonitis. The test also showed pneumonia in that bird. The Synoviae strain can also cause swelling in the joints although I didn't see that in this flock. Because of all the different symptoms I'm guessing many flocks go undiagnosed...the upper respiratory problems are 'just a cold' or the diarrhea is thought to be vent gleet.

Symptoms can be controlled with antibiotics but the birds will always be carriers of the disease. It can also be passed through the egg. I thought that maybe I could breed and hatch my way out of this but the chicks I hatched this spring were kept in quarantine and are already showing symptoms. For this reason I've decided to depopulate and start over.

Some of you here know I wanted to share some of these beautiful birds but that's not going to happen this year...for that I'm truly sorry. This has been a hard decision for me because these are a rare variety and it will take me a few years to get back to the point of offering chicks. I'm not giving up and when I get there I'll let you know.

@Huntress78 so sorry to hear about your birds. that is so sad that it is spread through the eggs and you can't just hatch some of your own to replace them.

@JVS1583 congrats on dumping the goats, selling pups, getting the Blazer back (sounds like more work for you though), negotiations on call ducks and sorry to hear about the rooster.


Somehow I threw my back out on Saturday. I wanted to finally get the garden planted, and now I can barely bend down to pet the dogs. Luckily the brooder is high enough I don't need to bend down to tend the chicks. Man, they eat a lot and those little black chicks are teaching everybody else how to scratch holes in the litter and cover the food and water dishes with litter...

I need to get a better feeder for them, the saucer is a little small for them suddenly. Any suggestions on a feeder for 16 fast growing dual purpose chicks. I am thinking of making a trough feeder for them - any ideas on how long I should make it?

So sorry to hear the results and what you have to do. Where does that infection come from? What is egg peritonitis? and how do you tell if it is vent gleet? Sorry, for so many questions, but, I'm new to birds. I lost my favorite Gimpy to DS dog yesterday and that was hard, I wish you luck with the restart.

Thanks for the shout out about Gimpy, she was my favorite, because she was the only one I could pick up and she was such a fighter coming back from the leg injury.
