Well aren't you the happy greeter Jimbo.

That is very nice of you.

Welcome Phoenix! Glad you could join us.

Cind, any other symptoms besides mushy belly & soft stools? Is she eating & drinking ok? Not getting bullied? I'd load her up with the vit./electros, probios & lots of foods rich in vitamin A. If that doesn't clear up the softies, try putting epsom salts in her water for a few hours to get her to purge her system. Then go heavy on the vit/electros & probios. HTH

The danged tomatoes are taking forever to ripen and there are TONS of them. Only one red one so far and that was over a week ago. The hubs said a couple of people where he works said the same thing. Anyone else having this experience this year?
Yes, I was wondering about that two. I have Huge tomatoes, Beef Master, I have had 5 ripen, put them up as salsa. They each weighed 2.5 #. And I have grape tomatoes and they are ripening here and there. The big tomatoes are just sitting there, tho, I do see one on the vine that might be ready tomorrow.

What is ascites? Hope my girls don't get that....sounds yuky.

If you Google it, it will come up, a fluid buildup in the abdomen of a chicken. It has to do with organ failure; nothing really preventable. You can postpone the inevitable by draining the fluid, but since the ascites is a symptom and not a cause, it will likely return. The worst is that it fills the abdominal cavity, making the bird feel full while essentially starving it.

Busy Day here canning here..... Congrats on the gills Cind...those are as good as it gets.....tough call on your hen...it can be so many things....good Eye to catch her symptoms....hope you can figure it out. We did V8 juice yesterday and corn today. My maters are turning fine.....if you grow the late ones, they can always fail without perfect weather. I prefer the jetsetter variety....large early hybrid that always does well here. Grape tomatoes are crazy here.....I've given away bags of them and eaten them like candy for a couple weeks already.

Nothing new here, but work and more work.

Have fun....bigz

I don't think we are going to can many tomatoes this year.. that's why I planted only 6 plants..
I noticed today that the tomatoes are piling up on the counter.. might have to do a batch ..

corn is my project every year.. we do pint packages and freeze it.. I try to do about 50 bags..
I don't ever want to eat store bought canned or frozen corn again..

Zeke didn't eat anything today.. he is bright and alert, but just off his feed ..
Maybe he ate a chicken ? naw, he wouldn't do that ..

A couple tips for "forcing" tomatoes

top the plant,,,cut off the main vine and terminate all new growth on branches

in a week or so you should see faster ripening,,,,if not

root prune the plant,,,,use a vertical shovel placed 6-8* from the stem,,,step down to the top of the shovel ,,,,,do this on 1/2 of the plant,,,,you are cutting the tips of the roots,,,,,just a simple straight down jab is all it takes.....

remember,,,,only do 1/2 of the plant,,,,,,

these 2 things both will signal the plant that it is done growing and needs to "ripen" and set seeds,,,,,,,,,pretty basic when you think about it.

Both of these tricks are common here in the north,,,,,,I'm guessing your weather hasn't been the best for 'maters this year,,,,rain,,cool nights both have been around the state this year,,,slows things down

OR don't do anything and hope for a really warm, sunny September
