Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Love reading about all the egg incubating and hatching. Don't know that we will get to that point for quite some time, but you never know. Headed to Menards today, hardware cloth is the big purchase. May get the block so I can start laying out the base to look at it for the rest of the week. Hubs still convinced I am going to "realize" that the plan is too large and will decide to go smaller...

trust me,, he is wrong, you are right.
in fact, you might be making it too small..

I have a concrete mixer if you want to pour a floor .
I would pour a slab, then lay the block on the edge of it, then build on top of the block.

I raised the sill of the door a few inches higher than the floor. made the door to swing in.. so no matter how much snow we get, I don't have to shovel snow to open the door.

I locked the coop up last night, left the pop door open so the chickens can still go outdoors. this morning there is a chicken on the lawn.. IDK, did she fly over the fence ? was she not inside the coop after dark ?

Good morning... had some issues with bees we ordered so finally got that all sorted out. Need to work on my chicken coops next as well as flower beds. So much to do and not enough time to do it. Looks like Sunday is going to be nice but mom wants me to come in and help her with some things... bummer.. but I know she needs the help and someone has to do it!

On a side note...seeing more roos appear from this hatch at 4 weeks.

Here is a pic of the cochin I really wanted to be a girl. Now I would like to find this splash cochin a girl friend because he is super sweet and cute. So sweet. I dont think we have alot of cochin people on here do we ... Terri had given me some OE eggs and we have one that is a throwback to a silkie she has not had for years.... it has black skin, legs and beak but no fluff or poof. Her name is Jet and so far... looks girly...but time will tell. I know that I have 2 maybe three andalusians that are roos. I rescued two that are supposed to be girls...one black sex link and a black australorp. Someone's kids thought they were cute to pick up from hardware store for Easter... now that they are ugly, mom and dad said they have to go. At four weeks of age... alot of sex question marks and most are EE or OE mutts so hard to tell.

Anyone know anything about raising huge cabbage? Kids were given giant cabbage plants and they need to raise as big as they can, weigh them for a competiton for $$ for their college fund... I have never done the cabbage thing...are they deep rooters?
thanks

cabbage has a root that is thick,, sort of like a huge carrot or horse radish looking thing. maybe goes down about 10 inches..

dig a hole about a foot deep, put manure in the bottom couple of inches, cover the manure with good compost and bury the cabbage root in the compost.
then jump back quickly so you don't get hit when it starts to grow..

Well, the plowing and disking didn't happen yesterday. The hubs is finishing off the outside of the coop and needs to have the loader so the garden must wait.

Other than garlic, has anyone planted anything directly in the garden yet?

What have you started indoors?

I just took the weed wacker to the asparagus patch and took it down as far as I could. Rhubarb is starting - won't be long now!

The chickaroos are loving the weather and the bugs it brings out. They don't seem to be going after any of the box elder beetles and there are more of them this year than I've seen in years past.

Just got the lime on my garden. My asparagus is almost a foot tall. Relatively new patch. Strawberries are coming on strong and the rhubarb is ready to pick. Going to be planting beans, radish (already have a small amount planted), peas, cukes and zuchinni within the next week.

My asparagus hasn't even popped through yet!

I don't know you're strains but I'm pretty good at guessing gender usually at about 4 weeks if you want post some pics and I'll make some educated guesses. Of course if you can give me info about age and breed that would be great. I try to help out on the silkie sexing thread but I also love guessing other breeds too and seeing if I'm right. We currently have a three week old EE I'm almost certain is a pullet and one I'm almost certain is a boy. We also have straight run white rocks I've been working on but they're more like 2-2.5 weeks so a bit harder. I've also been working on some other pure chicks and mixes that we hatched 2-3 weeks ago. We also got two sexed cuckoo Marans pullets and I'm pretty sure we got one cockeral and one pullet which I've been suspicious of since day one. Ugh time will tell if I'm right and hopefully I'm not. Also you guys are killing me with the cochin talk :) I can hardly wait! Ugh why does it have to be next year we agreed upon.
