Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

I planted potatoes today. First time I have tried them but had some space in my spring garden and some potatoes that I needed to use up so........ Cooking up a batch of apple butter as I type. Will probably get it done tomorrow and then can it up. My little chicks are now out in the garage. They still have a small heat source available at night but more air and they can start to get ready to live outside. I swear I am going to take pics one of these days.

what kind of potato did you plant ?
You know, reds do not multiply if you hill them like russets do.

I ran into my potato seed guy at F&F. I ordered 40 pounds of russets and 10 pounds of reds..
I do not cut the potatoes.

tomorrow I am planning on working hard on the tractor equipment. my 3pt hitch and hilling discs are on the way.
I figure by wednesday I should have them.

I bought all the fittings I need to make the stabilizer for the 3 pt hitch. I have plenty of chain around here, so I didn't have to buy any of that.

I will take pictures if it turns out like I hope it does.

I think the sweet potatoes that GG brought to me are getting roots already.

DD Barby gave me a ged grow light.

I am going to rig it up in one of the incubators and use it like a
heated green house for starting some plants..

Finally finished our pre-approval for our new home....... it will be so nice to have some room to spread out on........

Job is going well! It is so odd to go from working in a manufacturing facility to corporate offices! I know I will adjust, but it is a pretty big learning curve.

Anyway, thought I would pop in and say hello while I am home.

Sorry Jim but I have to disagree with that statement. All potatoes require hilling or deep mulching for best results. The new potatoes grow above the seed that you use, hence the deeper the hill/mulch (to a point) the larger the crop.

"The point" is as soon as flowers begin to form that is deep enough, then the key is to make sure consistent water is present, the "hooks" appear with the flower buds, as the flowers open this is when the crop will profit from irrigation (esp if there is little to no rain)

I like early baby reds, so I plant the plants close in the rows, 6-9" apart and as the season progresses I harvest every other hill/plant. Letting the plants remaining to mature.

There is a very serious problem with "early blight" in the WI potato crop and since this is one of the main "seed potato" states the state AG board is addressing the issue. Home gardens are one of the main problems with this problem. Most home gardeners don't want to use chemicals, there is no other way to control blight. The same blight is what kills your tomato plants. I really encourage folks to educate themselves if you want to be successful and also help your local commercial growers.

I didn't mean don't hill the reds. what I was led to believe is
that they don't set potatoes up the stem/root as you hill them,.
like the russets do.

happy Easter.
today is the day we celebrate the angels rolling the stone away from the mouth of the tomb.
Jesus came out and saw his shadow and went back in and we get 6 more weeks of winter..

5 eggs yesterday.

I was knocked off the internet yesterday,
"No internet connection".
I just now got back on.

I spent awhile this morning working on Ollie.
Plan A for the sway restrictor failed. I still have plan B and C.

........jiminwisc......

ETA:
I worked on plan B, It looks promising,
but I need a 5/8" bolt that is a one inch longer than the one I have.
F&F is closed today. I think they did that on purpose.

I picked up a few dozen started tomato plants from DD Barby. by started, I mean that they have emerged are in individual pots and are about an inch tall.. all Roma
