Wisconsin "Cheeseheads"

Worked in the woods yesterday cutting a 70' ash tree
into 6 logs to haul to the saw mill. The old barn needs some fixing and the ash will make excellent beams and planks.
It will save a ton of money not buying the beams and planks
at the lumber yard. I will be cutting more in the future when
I have the time.
I might do some meat birds too TOR. I for sure need to either buy some laying chicks or incubate some eggs for more young stock.

Hi everyone,

It's been a couple years since I've posted, but I'm looking for a couple pullets for this year and thought I'd ask here before I place an order. Let me know if anyone is looking to sell a couple.

Also I was wondering if anyone has a swap meet schedule for this year. I'm struggling to find one that is accurate online.

Thanks in advance!
Becky

Hiya, Becky! :frow

It's not totally updated yet as when you get to October it flips to April '24, so that'll get updated as those swaps confirm their dates.

Hi,

I'm new to using BackYard Chickens so I hope I'm doing this right.

I wanted to check if anyone in the southwestern WI area would have hatching eggs for sale. I've been checking Ebay for hatching eggs but am shying away from that option because I don't want them to freeze in shipping and the shipping costs are high.

They can be mixed breeds but I'm a little picky on what I want. Looking for Delaware, Orpington, Salmon Favorelle, Plymouth Rock, Australorp, or Brahma.

Also, am interested in getting a couple Seabrights for my son. Anyone have experience with how these do in our cold climate?

Idk
I don't think this would have anything to do with it but the postal system kind of sucks now. It used to be better but now you can't trust birds in the mail anymore.
I am NPIP so I tried my hand at shipping birds a few times. My birds got lost in the mail for 6 days (fortunately they were adults and survived) and it turned me off of doing that forever.

In regard to local hatching eggs, sometimes stopping by
rural farms with eggs for sale signs by the road can
lead to fertile hatching eggs from the farmer.
Looks like a couple more weeks of cold weather coming.
Longer daylight sure helps though.

Personally I would recommend buying local.
I agree! We bought our first chicks from the L&M in Hayward. Our mail order chick experience was sad - 2 of 4 chicks didn’t make it, and the third one died despite our best efforts.

Going to try to find someone up this way who has a Midnight Majesty Maran and a Buff Brahma they’d like to rehome in the spring. It’s slim picking up here.
